Do You Like This Story?

What a strange juxtaposition we have in the news this week. No pictures of the terrified, desperate asylum seekers who drowned when their 9m leaky wooden boat sunk on its way to Australia crammed with 70 people including many children. And a stampede of media to greet a brunette girl who first became famous because of a sex video and has since cleverly built herself into one of the most powerful and recognisable brands in the Western world.

Honestly? I’m interested in both. We are certainly not walking any high ground at Mamamia. We covered Kim Kardashian’s divorce announcement yesterday just like everyone else. We run galleries about her regularly and later today we have a terrific post from journalist Alissa Warren about the phenomenon that IS the Kardashians, trying to objectively understand how someone can be so famous…..for being famous. How that cycle is able to amplify itself so exponentially.

I’ve been watching a bit of Celebrity Apprentice and thinking a little bit about what it means to be a ‘celebrity’. As has Deni Hines and Polly from The Block who had the most absurd argument about it.

Maybe we just all need some levity. Maybe celebrities – certainly the Kardashians – are like Barbie Dolls for grown women. We like to look at them and follow the storybook narratives of their lives. It’s a form of escapism. But it’s pretty sobering when your child asks “how do you become famous?” and you don’t know how to reply.

Back to the asylum seekers who have died, I’ve almost not been able to listen to the news this morning, I cannot bear the cynical and opportunistic politicking that will go on. It’s heartless. I accidentally caught Immigration Minister Chris Bowen giving a radio interview where he spoke of ‘removing the incentives for people who come by boat. Incentives? I can only imagine how desperate you would have to be to climb onto a shitty little boat, leaving everyone you love and everything you own behind you in search of safety for yourself and your family.

Where possible death at sea and certain imprisonment behind razor wire – probably for years, even if you have children with you – is preferable to living in your current circumstances.

If you haven’t already read this post, 10 things you need to understand about asylum seekers, I recommend it. Lots of important, factual information in there for when you inevitably come across someone who sprouts rubbish about ‘queue jumping’ etc.

Now – here’s how things have been looking in the office this week – we’ve had lots of new people starting and I’ve moved offices and it feels fresh and novel. MM’s news editor Rick put this gallery together. He’s good with a camera and a caption…..

Our own fashions on the field (office) were won by Mia's jacket, to be frank.

Tonight, I’m launching Jessica Rudd’s second novel Ruby Blues and I need to finish my speech!

And finally, our very own Digital Marketing Manager Matt (who you can follow on Twitter here) is in the running to be the Clinique It Guy. The competition closes on Friday – we’ve all been voting for him and we’d love for you to vote for him too. You can do so here.

So how has your week been? What’s on your mind?

Quick post – my son is in Monash with a burst appendix. Have a quick 5 minutes before going to see him. Long wait but finally had surgery after waiting 10 hours in ED then on the ward. Staff are amazing. Feel so privileged to live in this country. To think children can die from appendicitis in other countries in unthinkable.

Being a tired bumpkin right now. I just got asked to become permanent in my new job. I do disability support work, so basically being a carer for a number of ‘clients’. So I’ve been doing extra training kind of work this week. I did 4 shifts over the last 3 days.. 23 hours. It’s kind of tough when the work is pretty much being on your toes all the time!

So on my mind? How strange it was going into the community today. Usually, we just stay around the house after everyone gets back from their day centres and we make dinner/prepare everyone for bed. But today, I took one of the girls to the shops and as her wheelchair is broken right now, she was using a manual wheelchair and I had to push her. I wasn’t expecting quite so many looks. And so many people trying to tell me stories about people they knew with disabilities. People I wasn’t even near to would just come up and start talking. It’s all a bit interesting. Obviously I’m not criticising, goodness knows I’m a curious kind of kid. But I did feel a bit weird and uncomfortable. Not to mention, coordinating a wheelchair is frigging hard work. They are big machines and most shops do not have aisles of an adequate width. Kind of annoying, but c’est la vie! So that’s what’s on my mind!

It’s not particularly interesting, but all I can think about is babies.

Last week I started prenatal yoga classes and everyone is about the same stage as me (between 22 and 26 weeks) and they all have lovely little baby tummies poking out. Me, I just look like I ate too much. I’m one of those “Is she or isn’t she” women. Total first world problem obviously, but I’m starting to get tired of people asking me where my baby is only for me to have to tell them it’s hiding beneath a significant layer of gut.

Meanwhile I’m feeling pretty good (touch wood) and my MIL had a bit of a go at me over the weekend, asking me when I will start acting like a pregnant woman. What am I supposed to be doing? Sure I get tired easily, but it’s not like I have a serious illness!

    End rant.

I was the same. I swear when I went for my 19 week ultrasound, I thought they were going to say you’re not pregnant. I was that flat. Then around 25 weeks or so I started to pop out and then gained 18 kilos! I kept banging my stomach into things because it got so big so fast. So don’t worry – it will come….and then some!

Haha, the doctor that I saw at the hospital said that “because I have a layer of fat on my stomach it will be harder for me to feel the baby moving”.
I was the same – I just looked and felt a bit bigger as time went on. Bonus, though – I didn’t really need much in the way of maternity wear!
I know what you mean about yoga though – I had the same thing at yoga and prenatal classes – but the girls who looked heaps more pregnant but were the same time along were all little skinny minnies naturally, and I’m not. When you’ve got big boobs and hips, tall and are a bit overweight anyway, I think it’s not as noticeable.

I have to share what I have been up to this week. As all the mums out there will know it is often very difficult to get time to yourself. Anyway I decided that my ‘me’ time was going to be exercise. However this was going to prove to be difficult with a 2.5yr old and a 14mth old and a husband who works away. So my new plan is when my husband is home I get up at 6am and go for a walk & jog. When he ISN’T home my brilliant brain came up with the idea to run around the house…..sound weird? I just take the baby monitor downstairs, open the gates surrounding the house (2 storey) and walk and jog around my house for 30 minutes. So far I haven’t been interrupted by waking children. So I walk, jog and do step ups and step downs near my rubbish bin. And I’m so happy – thinking time and exercise all in one! Oh it is the little things when you are a mum!

Hi dkmum. My husband works away on a roster that goes 5 days on 4 days off, 4 days on 5 days off. He is 2.5hrs drive away. He has done this for a fair few years so I am used to it. My parents live near me so Mum does pop over for around an hour in the evenings so I can shower and eat. If she can’t for some reason, I do cope, I just eat and shower after they have gone to bed. Online grocery shopping is sometimes a big help. It can get a little lonely but there usually isn’t too much time for that looking after two boys. When I do see a friend though I am aware that I am talking their ear off, must learn to listen more! Feel free to ask me any questions xx

Hmm, it’s always the part about the grandmother that gets me :o (
My husband is 4 weeks on and 4 off. I haven’t got any family of my own in Australia, and my in-laws are 30 minutes away, and are, well in-laws… i.e. not the same.

I worry about going through the early queasy stages of pregnancy with my two-year-old, let alone the last couple of weeks. And then the day-to-day struggles of being a ‘single mum’ with two kids, I find a toddler is enough work. I’m just struggling to see how it will all work out and me keeping my sanity at the same time.

A friend gave me some good advice when I was stressing about how I was going to handle two children (I was stressing because mine are only 15 months apart!). She said once my second baby was born life with him would become the “new normal”. So you will adjust and adapt and soon you will indeed find life with two the “new normal”. Best of luck and please don’t stress (oh and I agree with the in laws not being the same, nothing is the same as your own mum helping out!).

That’s a brilliant idea! Reminds me of a few stories…. One, of the lady who lost all that weight by walking around her clothesline. That was a big story years ago! Also reminds me of some episode of ‘Wife Swap’ I saw, where the husband made his wife wear weights around her ankles as she did housework. Or maybe she just wanted to do that? Not sure. Either way, she wore high heels and had weights around her ankles as she pondered around and that strengthened her leg muscles heaps! Lol. Good luck with your ‘you’ time! :)

The situation with the refugees is just so sad. It’s a topic close to my heart because my job involves working with refugees and other migrants – I teach them English and help them settle into life in Australia. Although my job is technically “teacher” I do so much more and I get to know my students on a very personal level. They often tell me their stories. Almost all of the time these people are simply fighting to survive and jumping on a boat is their only choice. If they stay in their country they will most likely be dead within days in a lot of cases. People have so much hatred for these “boat people” but I’m sure if they knew some on a personal basis and heard their stories the way I do, they would think a bit differently.

I’ve done it – I’ve found the motivation I need to lose these last kilos.

A while ago, I defriended a lady on facebook, and she proceeded to send me these passive-aggressive messages about it. Anyway, I saw her at the shops today. She’s still a bitch, but she *looks* good. So my mission, should I choose to accept it, is to look better than her!

Last weekend, the non-profit organisation my partner and I volunteer for held its’ AGM and we were both elected into executive committee positions again. Lucky was nominated Club President (he was President in 2010) and I was nominated Club Secretary. On top of that, I was asked to take on the Liquor License again (I was the License Manager in 2010).

So obviously they loved us more than this year’s committee :)

Needless to say – being elected into a role that requires that much adminitration – I’m positively trembling in excitement at the thought of all the new stationery I *ahem* need to buy.

To the point that I even dedicated an entire blog post to the idea:

AND spent 15 minutes making up a new verse to “My Favourite Things” (from the Sound of Music):

“Pencils and markers and new Marbig note-books,

The weather has been lovely over here in WA, so the hats and sunscreen are out with a vengence. Can anyone recommend a good 30+ sunscreen for sensitive skin? We use Banana Boat sensitive and I feel like I’m covered in grease and I look shiny all over. It will NOT wash off – which is great for the beach but incredibly annoying when all I want to do is get the slimy stuff off at the end of the day! I’m such a sunscreen Nazi with the kids and would dearly love to be using something less…..well, gross. Not the most descriptive word I’m afraid, but that’s how it makes me feel. So does anyone have any other suggestions? Thank you!

plus i have very sensitive skin and it doesnt irritate or itch it at all.
im in nsw – sydney – so it gets pretty gross and humid and sweaty but its a great sunscreen, plus i love that its spf 50.

and because its the eight hour cream, sometimes i dont even bother with moisturiser as it has it built in.

The biggest thing on my mind today is that my cat was killed sometime this morning. I didn’t realise how upset I was until I was burying him and had a breakdown because his grave had leaves and twigs on it and it should be pretty. Cue me in the dirt on my hands and knees making it perfect. I fashioned a cross out of two sticks and some vine and made sure he was buried with his favourite cat toys.

I honestly didn’t think I would be this affected. I loved my cat. I knew I’d be sad if something happened to him, but I never would have thought that it would be like this.

My estranged partner rushed home from work to dig the grave for me, because I’m still not strong enough to do something that intense (the joys of being sick). I didn’t even need to ask him to.

While he dug, I cleaned Ripley down as best I could, with both my tears and water. I made sure he was brushed. I hugged him and let him go…

I worked with a woman years ago who was a refugee from Vietnam, I don’t think we know the half of it when it comes to what goes on in these situations. She spoke of the possibility of being raped and murdered by pirates before they even got near Australia. Also I remember seeing one of the boats the Vietnamese traveled in at the museum in Darwin, is it still there, perhaps someone could post a picture.
Does anyone else find it a tad ironic that one of the faces of Mining, in the commercials that promote the mining industry is a man who arrived here on a refugee boat from Vietnam?
I do not understand our government’s complete lack of humanity and compassion on this issue. I am ashamed of us and I am ashamed for us.
As for the K.K. marriage, I can’t really believe that anyone would marry for publicity, but I suppose it is possible. Speaking as the mother of grown children, I prophesy that none of those Kardashian women will have happy marriages until they get out from under their “momager” (what a hideous word, what a hideous concept)

Levity is what we need and the old saying that many hands make light work comes to mind too …. so having made myself PM this morning and appointed Idle Dad as CEO and Kris as chief officer of Navy Australia Refugee Rescue, have found positions for everyone else too:

Mia and team : Media representatives
Lana : In charge of refugee babies and babysitting
Rick : Responsible for refugee gay rights, of course
Bec: Accounting … I hear she’s good at requesting receipts from people
Sometimes Karen: in charge of refugee religious matters
JJ : Counselling, technological advice and playing the Beach Boys for added levity and smiling and important cultural exchanges
R: Hawling JJ back from chasing Zooey Deschanel
The Wounded Bull : Keeping an eye out for hypocrites
The usual suspects aka other MM commentators can submit EOI’s for other positions as they become available or volunteer as they feel necessary. Looking for someone to take charge of employment, housing, etc etc. Very easy work as the refugees are as keen as mustard to make something out of their lives and BE SAFE with their children.

Oh, one drawback, absolutely no pay is involved in these positions *cough* sorry

Finished Uni for another year to getting my head around working again- first world problems but a week of 7am starts is killing me!
Also- struggling with asylum seekers. There is so much fear and lies surrounding people who are just trying to survive. The lack of compassion some people have for them saddens me. I am certain that in the same situation almost every single one of us would take the same journey they are.
Ending on a happy note: joined a new gym and worked out 3 times last week :) feeling healthier already lol

All that is OMM all day and all night is the possibility that me and my partner are talking of separating. We have a beautiful 3yr old daughter and my heart just breaks that I am about to turn her world upside down…well at least shift it sideways a little bit. I know in my heart that the relationship isn’t good, and is falling apart but to actually take the steps to end it and make the separation reality terrifies me. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would end up a single mum. I feel so guilty that I am doing this to my daughter. But I guess getting out of a bad relationship is good to her in the end.

    • If you havent already, maybe see a counsellor with your partner. They might help you see either that you are going down the right track, or that there is still room to work on the relationship. Also, if things dont look up, they would have some good advice as to how to make the adjustments for your daughter as painless for everyone involved as possible.

I saw Chris Bowen on the TV this morning. I was annoyed that there was ANY political debate about this tragedy. Give these poor people the respect they deserve…there is plenty of time next week to start all the political grandstanding.

So true, re refugees. The tragedy of the situation is totally being lost in the spin cycle.

We have a speedboat in our front yard which we take out on the weekends. it is licensed to take 6 adults, or 4 adults and 4 children under the age of 12. One of my partner’s work colleagues arrived as a refugee on a boat. He said when he came out to Australia, there were over forty people on a boat the same size, with no toilet. I can’t believe anyone thinks that this is an easy ride.

How sobering! I too had a work colleague who arrived from Vietnam on a boat as a small child. His earliest memory is of being passed from one boat to another over rough, open ocean. So sad when children’s earliest memories should be happy ones of favourite toys or cuddles.

anyway my personal experience – ive been using it once a day, at night, for 2 weeks, and my skin is looking and feeling amazing.
i have pretty nice pale skin, but with acne scars and pigmentation due to sun damage on the paleness.
And i have a blackhead dotted nose.
The clarisonic is amazing – it seems to be removing all my congestion (particularly around my tzone area) and every day my skin is becoming brighter and smoother and softer. my nose blackheads have cleared up about 50%.

ive had a couple of compliments already on how glowy and fresh and good im looking (without any makeup) from people who havent seen me in a while.

Facebook is on my mind today. I witnessed an interesting event unfold whereby a FB friend of mine was defriended by a mutual friend. The defriended friend (how confusing is that?) then started a bitch session on FB about the friend who defriended her, assuming that as she had been defriended by the other friend, the other friend wouldn’t actually be able to see her comments. Not true! She was still able to see comments by other people who were still her FB friends and as such, able to see everyone’s bitchy comments, sparking a bit of a FB bitch fight, via other friends’ walls, including mine. Thankfully I was able to delete all bitchy comments from my wall as I really don’t want any part in FB bitch fights or to have nasty comments on my wall! The whole event has just brought home how things like this can escalate so quickly these days thanks to social media. I can see how cyber bullying amongst teenagers gets so out of control – it’s a bit scary really to think how it will be for my kids in another 15 years when they are teenagers with raging hormones and little common sense…

Lesson – be careful what you might think you’re innocently posting in your FB status, especially if it’s about someone else – even if they aren’t your friend, they are likely to be a friend of a friend!

I backed the winner in the office sweeps yesterday as a pure fluke – i didnt want to bet (as per my posts about my issues with the industry), but it was the last horse left, so i gave in and gladly the horse i picked was Dunaden.

I think the world needs to stop talking about trivial KK rubbish, and more about the things that really make a difference, like asylum seekers, and Mia’s views do give me that extra sense of humanity that so many people lose when this issue arises.

Whats on my mind, is trivial, but its annoying. I offered to have people over for dinner – my partners workmates & partners. I LOVE feeding people yummy food, but i am puzzled as to what to feed one particular person who wont eat meat except for sausages and sausage rolls, because she doesnt like the texture – BUT she will eat chicken. It just to me sounds like picky food habits gone crazy (like the post eariler this year on MM) and it does sort of make me wonder how far the pickiness will actually go on the night, even taking into account the preferences I already know of!

you could do homemade chicken “sausage” rolls.
Basically get some chicken breast, chop it up and cook it. Then in a blender mix the chicken, fetta, spinach & semi dried tomatoes (to whatever taste – I usually use about 2/3 block of fetta a small container from safeway of omatoes & a large handful of spinach). Blend it till its nice of smooth. Put it on some pastry, roll up, cut and cook. SOOO simple and they freeze well too.

        They’re delicious.

You can also make them into the triangle pastries so they’re a little bigger for a more substantial meal.

Determine which zone you’re in and it’ll tell you what to plant each month.

When you click on the plant hyperlinks it gives you more info – like how to plant it and what it’ll grow nicely alongside (and what to avoid planting together).

Apart from that, just hit up Bunnings for pots, potting mix & seedlings and dive in. The best way is to start small and work your way up.

  34. SMiLE

Let me explain. In 1988, when I was 22, I bought a CD box set called “The Beach Boys: The Capitol Years”. This was a 4 CD greatest hits package of the music The Beach Boys recorded between 1962 and 1970. Most of it was the usual stuff we all know…all the songs about surfing and cars and girls. But there was one song that was different from all the others. It was called Cabbinessence. (You can hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ElVmW7P7Hq0#! )

It blew my mind. It was so different from all their other music. Complex, difficult, unique and extraordinary. When I read the sleeve notes, I discovered that this was the “B” side to Good Vibrations, and like GV, it was a song that was meant to be on an album called SMiLE that was started in 1966, but abandoned in 1967. My heart was broken. You mean there was meant to be more of this beautiful music, but they never finished it? What a tragedy!

SMiLE, largely written by Brian Wilson (the music) and Van Dyke Parks (the words), was meant to be “a teenage symphony to God”. It was recorded by Brian Wilson in small sections…modules if you like…think about Good Vibrations with all it’s different movements. The whole SMiLE album was meant to be like that. But Brian’s drug abuse and mental health issues, as well as legal squabbles with record labels, eventually forced him to give up and abandon the project. He just couldn’t get his head around the increasingly complex music he was trying to record.

As I learnt more about The Beach Boys I discovered that other sections of SMiLE in various forms had been included in other albums, like the title track from their 1971 Surfs Up album. So I sought them out and bought these other albums to try and complete my collection of SMiLE out-takes.

But that wasn’t the end of the story…gradually I discovered more and more pieces of the SMiLE puzzle…sometimes in *cough*bootleg*cough* albums I found in dingy record stores…later on in mp3 files *cough*shared online*cough* by other SMiLE fanatics. But I never heard SMiLE the way it was intended to be heard…as a single album.

    But…

In 2003 rumours started to surface that Brian Wilson was working on a live concert based on the music of SMiLE. Not only that, it turned out he had decided to complete the whole project, including getting Van Dyke Parks to write lyrics for sections of music that had been left unfinished since 1967. In February 2004, 37 years after it was conceived, Wilson debuted the newly completed Smile at the Royal Festival Hall in London. He then went into the studio and recorded a completed version of SMiLE with his band.

It was a huge success. Somehow he had managed to recapture the sound he had produced all those years ago and finally recorded his masterpiece – he even took it on tour. One of my best concert experience was sitting front-and-centre in row three at the Sydney Opera House watching Brian and his band play SMiLE in its entirety.

But it wasn’t SMiLE…not really…SMiLE by The Beach Boys still didn’t exist…until now!

SMiLE by The Beach Boys has finally been released. You can listen to the whole album here: http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/3

…plus you can also download it on iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-smile-sessions/id471688297?ign-mpt=uo%3D4

(There is also a 5 CD version if you want to go crazy, like me!)

Wow! It is so much more than I expected. Yes, it’s not as complete as Brian Wilson’s 2004 reconstruction, but there’s something about the original recordings that can’t be replicated…something about the way they were recorded and the wonderful harmonies of The Beach Boys themselves that can never be replaced.

So, if you have some time today, please have a listen to SMiLE…even if you don’t like it enough to buy it, it is something that everyone should listen to at least once!

They will send you an email when the weekly plans are open…

any other questions let me know

I’ve done a round previously but fell pregnant in the middle of it, i’m planning on doing round 1 in February.

Besides losing weight, it totally changed the way I eat and how much I eat, I realised early on that my portions were way too big.

You do have to log on each week to get the new weeks information, there is a mobile site too if logging on each week is difficult.

Do it! It will change your life!

I’m doing it … you log onto the website for the meals etc, but they email you each week to remind you to check it.

You can only log onto the site for certain periods of time (eg each week comes ‘live’ in time and then it’s closed a week or so after the round).

It’s about $200 and it is Worth Every Cent.

I’ve lost 9kg in the last 8 weeks, Michelle is a dream, the online/offline community is fantastic, and the program itself is just bloody good commonsense.

      Good luck!

I’m following Sometimes Karen, I’m doing the Huggies one (she did a special deal for Huggies club members where you won a book if you signed up early enough), so I’m in Week 6, I’ve dropped 4kg (I’m breastfeeding though).
As the others have said, it’s excellent. The menu is great, she has done a regular plan and vego for each week (plus extra for us breastfeeding or pregnant Mums), and shopping lists to go with them.
By the end you’ll have a very comprehensive recipe collection (as long as you print them out!) and exercise plans as well. And you’ll also be a lot healthier and fitter, and have a much better idea about what to eat and how much to eat as well.
The price etc is in the FAQs on the website – I’m actually paying $20 a week for 12 weeks which does cost more over the time it takes to pay, but is easier for me to manage than one payment of $200.
I highly recommend having a look through the FAQs – the latest email that came through today mentioned she’s upgraded some bits of the members’ site, and it looks like the FAQs have been updated too – there’s stuff that I was emailing them about before I signed on that is there now.
If you have any questions after that, don’t be scared to send an email through – they won’t hassle you to sign up or anything, and they are super professional and knowledgeable about her program.
Like SometimesKaren said, it’s pretty much commonsense, and Mish is awesome. She does live Q and A sessions each week, using sort of like MSN and you type your questions in and she reads them out and answers them to camera for everyone.
We also have prizes for doing tasks each week and got discounts for stuff like scales, George Foreman grills, Heart Rate Monitors.
      Highly recommend it!

I bought it from a shop called ElevenEleven in Byron Bay in January for $200. The label is Something Else.
      Yesterday was its first outing.

Oh good, I’m not the only one who buys items and then doesn’t wear it for almost a year! Sometimes you just have to wait for the right occasion…

  41. Permanently twenty three

The focus on Kim K’s divorce is revolting, relative to what else is going on in the world.

I wish the media (MM included) wouldn’t speak about it, and refuse to give it any further oxygen.

    • I 100% agree – if its legitimate, let them grieve in peace, and if its a publicity stunt, then obviously dont play into their hands.
