A heavily pregnant woman who died in a crash between her car and a stolen vehicle in central Hobart has had her baby delivered in hospital.
The 24-year-old woman had just dropped her husband off at work and was driving the car with her two-year-old son inside when the crash happened about 1:00am on the corner of Davey and Argyle Street, police said.
Her son received minor injuries and her 32-week-old unborn child was later delivered at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
Police said they understood the newborn survived.
The 15-year-old driver of the second vehicle allegedly fled the scene but was later found at a house in Kingston, south of Hobart.
He is now under police guard in hospital and is being questioned about the crash.
The stolen car was seen driving at 120 kilometres per hour across the Tasman Bridge and police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
The two cars ended up on either side of the one-way arterial street and one car was severely burnt.
Police said three teenagers, including a 12-year-old girl, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
They are all from the Hobart area and are assisting police with their investigation.
Commander Glen Frame said the woman who was killed had just finished dropping her husband off at work.
“It was a tragedy that was an avoidable tragedy,” he said.
“This is a terrible situation where stolen vehicles are allegedly driven in a manner that puts the public at risk … our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased and all that were involved and impacted on by this accident.”
Traffic was diverted around the accident scene for several hours but is now flowing again.

Tougher penalties need to be handed out for this sort of offence. A mother will never get to know her child and a baby will never know the love of its mother. Regardless of the age of the offender, they know right from wrong. Our judicial system needs to get tougher or else what is the deterrent

I hope he is tried as an adult as this goes beyond a childish mistake.
