Friends' co-creator isn't impressed by this "insane" fan theory about Phoebe.

Some people sit back and enjoy their favourite TV shows.

Others invent bizarre, detailed or just plain creepy back stories and theories to twist, change or make sense of their beloved shows.

No matter what camp you fall into, it’s safe to say that when the series’ actual creator calls a theory “insane”, we can all agreed to drop it.

Love TV? Listen to the latest episode of The Binge.

That’s what happened last week when Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman slammed the theory suggesting the entire series is just the delusions of a drug-addled Pheobe.

In case you missed it, in 2015 Twitter user Gareth Stranks posited that Phoebe was still living as a homeless woman and had merely been watching the five others at Central Perk through the window and made up stories about their lives.

“All she ever wanted was… Friends,” Stranks wrote.

It’s deeply disturbing stuff and when Kauffman was asked about it, she told ET Online it was “the saddest thing I’ve ever heard”.

"That's a terrible theory. That's insane," she said upon hearing the theory for the first time.

"That's, like, that's like crazy alt-television theory. Wow.

"Someone needs a life, that's all I'm saying."

And with that, let's all agree to drop it and leave the Friends and their wholesome, wacky, not-meant-to-be-realistic lives alone, okay? Thank you.

Is there a fan theory that you wish would be disproved?

I don't think it's that insane, honestly. "And it was all a dream" is a pretty common trope in TV shows and movies, so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. Look up "all just a dream" on TV Tropes, if you want to see just how common it is!

And Marta Kauffman should be happy people like Gareth are still talking about her show, rather than dismissing him as having no life. I doubt he really thinks that's what happened - he's probably just having a bit of fun with it.

My theory.......Friends is a horrible show that hasn't stood the test of time and belongs firmly in the 1990s........ :P
