Buffy the Vampire Slayer will soon be returning to our TV screens with one crucial difference.

Grab your wooden stake and meet us in the cemetery.

There’s a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot on the way and some people are not happy about it.

Joss Whedon, the creator of the original series, has decided to bring back the cult TV hit, but this time he’d like it to be a bit more diverse.

According to Deadline, the reboot is already in development at Fox 21 TV Studios, the cable/streaming division of 20th Century Fox TV.

Monica Owusu-Breen, the creator of Midnight, Texas, has been tapped as writer, producer and showrunner of the new series.

If the reboot is successful, it will be set in the present day and will feature a much more diverse cast.

A statement from the producers reads: “Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today”.

Basically, the new series will have a person of colour as the lead. Yep, we could soon see a black Buffy kickin’ some serious vampire ass.

Of course, this being 2018, not everyone is happy about the reboot and some mega fans are hesitant to see an updated version of the cult TV show:

But, like most of our favourite shows from decades past, Buffy could do with some updating to bring it into the 21st century. And that includes adding (a lot) more diversity.

Joss Whedon has already made a reboot of his movie, so why not make another reboot of the TV show? It would be good if SMG could reprise her role, though, maybe being the Watcher or training new slayers.

If they want to build a show around a black slayer (which I don't think is a terrible idea), why not use Nikki Wood? She already exists in the Buffyverse as a black woman, rather than being a white character with her race changed. She had what seemed to be an interesting back story - she was a mother, she lived in NYC in the 1970s and she was eventually killed by Spike. I never read the Buffy comics (which I believe are canon) but looking at Wikipedia, it sounds like there is some interesting lore related to Nikki in those too.
