happy face Best and worst of the week.

So. Tell us about your week….

by LUCY ORMONDE

Is it Friday already? How did that happen?

The good news is that it’s time to get comfy and gather round and talk about how your week’s been. Grab a tea or coffee – I’m on peanut butter toast – and tell us the best bits, tell us the worst bits and tell us what’s on your mind. (OMM).

Best: Offspring. Were you watching the season finale? I wasn’t hooked from the get-go but I kept coming back – mostly because of Dr Chris Hamil and Nina’s wardrobe – and slowly it has developed into a bit of an obsession.

Usually when I watch TV, I’m surrounded by my laptop, iPad and phone (it’s disgusting, I know) but on Wednesday night it was just me, a cup of tea and Patrick Reid. Which was a little bit heaven. AND my best of the week became even better when Channel 10 announced they had signed the show for another 2 seasons.

Worst: The story of Thomas Kelly – the 18-year-old who was king hit in Kings Cross over the weekend. His parents switched off his life support on Monday night. Before he went out on the evening he was hit, Thomas’ parents said to him: “Please be careful, please take care”. We ran a post by Ben Fordham who interviewed Thomas’ dad – it’s beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.

Someone out there saw something or heard something or knows something – that can help police to solve this terrible crime. Is it you? In case it was, here’s the number you call call – 1800 333 000 (Crime Stoppers)

Over to you…. How’s your week been?

Best: Took kids to a movie and out for dinner both in one day and they were so well behaved, made for a two pleasant outings!

Worst: My credit card for this month – ouch :(

OMM: Have just started using Nu Skin galvanic spa and signed up to be a distributor, has anybody had success with this product, Ive seen all the before and after pics and my friends skin looks great from using it, Im also taking the vitality tablets so hoping for some more energy and to lift that cloud of fog that feels like I seem to have over my head most days.

Best: I had a landlord’s inspection without having an anxiety attack! It was still a tedious pain in the arse but I managed to keep my head. And the house looks and smells lovely. (Tip: use vanilla-scented fridge spray for non-greasy spray&wiping.) And my boyfriend is back home after 10 days away.

Worst: We’re both sick with head colds (acquired separately). I didn’t get much leisure time while he was away because I spent my spare time spring cleaning. My sister has diabetes (to add to her list of problems) but she’s got a good specialist and is kicking arse on her diet.

Prologue : I’m v tired and have had 3 glasses of wine.

Worst – does anyone ever notice the number of comments on a post rarely correlates to the importance of the issue posted about? e.g hundreds of comments about wanting to marry Patrick from Offspring, yet 24 about stillbirth. 440+ about flying with noisy kids, and a handful about missing children. Not suggesting it’s a competition for comments, just genuinely interested in this. Mamamia for escapism? Depends who clicks on which day?
    Ideas?

Best – not one bad thing happened this week :)

Worst – by best friend’s partner passed away early today. Completely unexpected and tragic. I’m numb and don’t know how to even begin processing.

Worst – impending departure of my partner for a 6 month stint away for work. He leaves next weekend. It’s only about a 3 hour drive from home but I will struggle without him around. Have this horrible feeling of watching D-day approach in slow motion and just sort of wishing it was all over already.

Best – we still have each other. Though the distance will be hard, it pales in comparison to my lovely friend.

Best (still): fantastic holiday last week. I was super stressed beforehand (see worst) and it was amazing how quickly that turned around. Also, discovered a new CSIRO cookbook on Sunday – gosh i love those recipes!

Worst: As an auditor it is crunch time, and it’s tough especially with my next CA project due in 2.5 weeks eek!

OMM: Since Jan I have lost 8.5kg (so happy!!!). I lost most of it in April and May. I still want to lose another 6kg by December. I am in a bit of a rut at the moment and have basically stabilised since May. For rounds 1 and 2 this year I considered signing up to the 12wbt but I didnt as I was doing pretty good by myself. Should I sign up to the 3rd and final round for this year? Has anyone done it when about half way to their weight goal? I really don’t want to waste the money (I tried the biggest loser website a few years ago with zero success), but I figure if I am already pretty motivated surely it won’t be a bad decision? Anyone’s thoughts would be much appreciated! :)

How to handle it? Cut off all contact with him, completely. Talk to your friends and family as much as you can to get it all out.

Realise that you too will get past this. If you think he is “the one” realise that we all think that, and after some time clarity kicks in and we realise he was not!

Best – the reason I am making the decisions is we are extending our house so Fatty can finally get a special bathroom. Yayness! Also school hols have been really lovely and relaxed.

Worst: Not usually something I stress about, but feeling lonely this week. Have been single 8 years. I’ve dated a few guys, but nothing getting off the ground. All my friends are married/coupled up and I do get friends offering to set me up, or saying ‘so and so would be perfect for you’, but they never follow through. And I do get a little bit over people telling me I’m so young and I have heaps of time to find someone. Can someone please tell me where all the single, happy, employed 30 something men are?

OMM: My 30th is coming up towards the end of the year, and I’d like to do something, but not entirely sure what. Want to sort it out before ‘still got heaps of time to plan’ turns into ‘oh s#!t it’s next week what the hell am I going to do’.

I know! being asked ‘How/why can you still be single?” is so annoying, although I know the asker is only trying to be nice by complimenting me.

My boss the other day even went as far to say “You are gorgeous, you should have men lining up to take you out…you must be doing something wrong!” Lucky we get on well and he is a strange, eccentric fellow with a rude/funny sense of humour I and didn’t take offence – I chose to take it as a compliment!! (But still)

These men who supposedly want ‘kind, thoughtful, smart, independent, interesting, attractive’ women….well we’re here!!! Just agree to see us for a second date you complicated mules!! And they say women are complicated….sigh.

and I honestly think I’ll punch the next twat who says “its far more likely to happen for you if you aren’t actively looking, it just seems to work that way”.

Oh, and BTW, to those who ‘missed out on’ the online dating thing? You didn’t miss much. I know it’s worked for some, but I’ve tried it a few times now, and it just doesn’t work for me. Upside? I’ve got some dating stories… Like the guy who I met for coffee, we ordered and he ducked off to the bathroom… and disappeared. TEXTED me saying he’d had a psychotic panic attack and left.

When I say ‘successful’ I mean date is fun, we click, laugh, heaps in common etc etc etc and I leave looking forward to the second date but as I’ve mentioned above, the second date rarely happens…. So unsuccessful really!

      I hear ya!!

“Can someone please tell me where all the single, happy, employed 30 something men are?” If you find out the answer let us all know. My girlfriends and I discuss this all the time. We meet up for dates with guys from reputable dating sites and have one or 2 great dates, loads in common, chemistry and they are usually never to heard from again despite their overly enthusiastic proclaiming of seeing us again.

They are spoiled for choice. And they can afford to be. These days there are loads of gorgeous single ladies out there so unfortunately at this point in the time it it seems to be VERY difficult to get anything off the ground in the dating world. And thats dating men off r-ship sites who strangely enough one would assume are indeed looking for a…….relationship! They hold all the power, and many seem very interested in window shopping but rarely stop to make a purchase.

      Good luck!

          Soooo disheartening/frustrating.

Had a fantastic first date last week…guy insisted on paying, extended date longer than he had to, mentioned a few times about seeing me again…even suggested we meet up down at the beach (we both have holiday houses in same area) last w/e if I was down there….. So a few days later I message him saying ‘no, won;t be down the beach but would be great to catch up next week..maybe drinks after work one night?”…he replies “Sounds great – touch base next week : )”

Soooo….I wait til Wed, starting to get a bit disheartened about lack of contact but bearing in mind he’s not big on texts and extremely busy with new job at the moment, and shoot him a text suggesting those drinks either Thur night or Fri night (tonight)……..nothing. nada. Just completely ignored me. Very disappointing as we had so much in common, he seemed to be so genuine & honest – can’t believe how rude some can be.

      Hi Kathy W

No advice to give specifically related to Japanese boys…
BUT I was an exchange student myself. And the best thing my hosts ever did for me was to treat me as part of the family! I ate and did exactly as they did and as an experience that was the best thing they could have done. I felt like I was just like another one of their children and that was a great feeling to have. best : my man’s pay rise this week – so happy, and after 12 months in a new job, slight direction change, he is happy that he is doing well and fitted in enough to receive pay rise = happy all round !

Worst-We were out and a water pipe in the top bathroom burst. The Mr came home to water gushing through the floorboards from above and an inch of water down stairs.

Best-At the most it went for an hour. I shudder to think if it had gone all day while we were at work…
-We are insured and it is covered, so anything that may need replacing (walls, downstairs ceiling, vanities etc) will be fixed.
-We have nothing downstairs, so nothing was ruined-no furniture or electricals.
-We have floor boards, so it didn’t spread over the top floor of our house, instead running through and downstairs
-If our floorboards need replacing, most are downstairs, which are not original, only a small hall area of original floorboards may need fixing upstairs (but we have to wait and see if they swell/buckle over time) (we live in an old Queensander which had the bottom floor built in about 10 years ago)

Best: Paris. I have been here a month and today is my second last day. It has been amazing. I had an extremely hard start but I have learnt some amazing life lessons and continue to appreciate everyday how lucky I am to be here.

Best: Paris! Such a beautiful city! Apart from taking many pictures of buildings and their doors ( I cannot help it.. They just look so strong and sturdy, safe and inviting all at once!), I have spent so much time in galleries. My passion for art is growing everyday and I am working out what I like and do not like. Gardens.. They are also great! Monet’s Garden in Giverny and the gardens at Chateau de Chenonceau!

Best: Amsterdam next and then Berlin! Any amazing suggestions for either city?

After just over three months of travel under my belt I am starting to look forward to going home. A little under two months to go! I miss my family and boyfriend. Very much.

OMM: I have a dilemma with my boyfriend. It has been interesting being so far away from him for so long. We have had our ups and downs like any relationship but being away has given me a lot of thinking time. He is someone who I cannot live without. I tried. We broke up and were apart for two years and then got back together. I missed him every day that we were apart. But its complicated. I call him my enigma. He surprises me everyday. But the part I am not sure if I am being delusional about… In a relationship, should one person attempt to like something because it makes their partner happy? I am currently in the ‘Romantic city of the world’ and watching couples makes me sad that my boyfriend does not want to experience new things with me because he does not like it. Is this normal? When I tried discussing it with him he says I am being unrealistic and trying to change him? I don’t know if its normal?

I think as long as he doesn’t stop you enjoying things that it is fine. Ive travelled without my boyfriend, as he hasn’t wanted to. Just like he goes on fishing trips with out me. I’d love if he came, but it is a lot of money for something he doesn’t think he would enjoy. And a lot of money for me to go on a holiday I don’t enjoy, because he is not enjoying it. Would you have been able to experience so much in Paris with him there? Would he have endlessly wandered streets photographing doors?

I so get you with the doors! I took photos of doors in ;ots in Europe but especially Paris – there were just fantastic doors everywhere I went – I’d never been particularly interested in doors before but there was just something about them I couldn’t resist.

I got some strange looks and sometimes made my daughters pose in front of them but it was really only the door I was after :)

Has he traveled before or does he just think he wouldn’t like it? I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who has traveled and didn’t like it, surely there isn’t such a thing? But I do know a few people who have never traveled anywhere and say they don’t like it.

Personally, I don’t think it’s normal. I think travel is the most amazing and valuable experience you could ever have and I don’t understand how anyone can not like it, what is there not to like? Seeing beautiful places like Paris, expanding your mind, learning about different cultures? I would find it hard to relate to someone who doesn’t like these things.

I have the worst migraine at the moment and all I want to eat is chiiiiips. Must resist.

OMM: Why do people keep asking for things when you have told them you do not want to accommodate them? I have one subject left to go in my law degree, and despite me telling people ad nauseum that I cannot give legal advice because I am not admitted and have no insurance, I keep getting requests. “Please, can you look at this contract for me…..I’ve got this problem with my boss…..my boyfriend’s ex is being a b*tch, what can we do about changing the custody arrangement….” ARGH!!!

    Found the best website today.
Richard Fidler ABC 702 interviewed a father called David Broadbent. he recorded the conversations he has with his 3 young daughters each night as he spent time with them. He asked them questions about moral dilemmas and the 10 commandments etc. The answers are just priceless. he also has a book out called “I don’t know why the person who made up the hand thought we only needed 5 fingers, sometimes I’ve needed six”
The title gives you a good indication of the kinds of things they come out with.
    The website is here

Best: it was our 13th wedding anniversary this week. We had a lovely meal out, just the two of us (first time in about 9 months that we’ve done that) with some nice bubbly. It was great.

Worst: had to call the poisons information line as Master A ate cat litter. Yep, mother of the year award over here! I had that moment of “do I call them, or will he be fine….nah better call them”. And he was fine.

Best: making some plans for the future :)

Oh last week (or even on Wed) someone (I can’t remember who) posted that they had the flu shot and how much it hurt. I had it yesterday and was thinking “pfft, didn’t hurt that much” until I went to sleep on it last night! Oweee. But at least I’ve had it now.

Worst – our dickhead deadbeat neighbour who plays explicit rap music loudly and often, smirking at me and refusing to turn it down. Four hours of music this afternoon, I might have to be calling up noise control (again) soon.

Best – we get the keys to our new house next Friday! I’ll be away at a conference for the weekend so we won’t be moving in next weekend but the end of living in the ghetto with inconsiderate neighbours is near!

OMM – how you never appreciate good neighbours until you have shit ones. At our new house, our neighbours will be my parents! Yay for buying the house next door to my family home, I know my mum doesn’t blast music about having bitches in the shower for hours on end! (Or at all actually)

Best: Things have been going well for awhile now…hope I don’t jinx it by talking about it! Husband and I seem to have taken our relationship to a new level, despite the fact we thought we had it pretty good before. I am allowed to work 40hrs a week in the band library, and as we have access due to husband being a grad student, we have been working at night when no one is around to annoy us (with our new friend and fellow flute player). Make hay while the sun shines! Plus I went to the conference in Ohio with a friend, and made some great connections (and met an Australian!)

Worst: Skyped my brother last night. He has had a rough trot, long story short, he left his wife after their son was born as she confessed to an infidelity that she couldn’t live with now she was a mother (despite him having a feeling earlier, and her refusing to admit – my brother does not take those issues well). And my parents appear to have sided just a little more with her than him…which I think is so unfair. Yes, he didn’t treat her with as much respect as she deserved at times, but I am angry that that they aren’t looking after their own first. And that I’m not there for him…he doesn’t have much of a support system at home, and it’s frustrating!

OMM: Going to cut my hair either tomorrow or Sat…going to go the shortest I have been, just above my shoulders. I look so young, I don’t think long hair is helping, so I am thinking of keeping my layers but above my shoulders. Going to miss the laziness of long hair though…if I can’t be bothered washing it, I can just tie it back! Guess I will use some scarves and headbands instead. :)

Is the baby his? Leaving your wife just after a baby is born is extremely harsh, regardless of the situation. Your parents are probably thinking of their grandchild and the mother being alone.

It sounds very very complex probably best for no one to takes sides, but if she is a new mother and the baby is your neice/nephew/grandchild the focus really should be on its welfare.

Sorry to hear about your brother Rach, I know it is hard to be so far away from your family and feel like there’s not much you can do but just letting him know you’re there for him is I’m sure a big comfort to him.

As for hair cuts I need one badly! Even my husband is starting to ask me when I’m going to get it cut… which HARDLY happens so if he is saying it then I need to go lol. Mine is just past my shoulders now but my hair is super thick so I mainly go to get it thinned out… it’s now at that point where I can’t really wear it down and have to tie it up all the time so need to get it tidied up.

Hmmm maybe next month :) Good luck with yours!

Worst: Kids and hubby still not 100% over the cough/cold/flu that has made them miserable.
OMM: How to politely ask my SIL and her partner if they could please stay in their own house while we are at my MIL’s next week. They live 5 minutes away, so surely they could just come for dinner or a hang out instead of staying? WORST: Ummmm….

OMM: My faith in humanity has been restored!! Ok, that’s a little dramatic but…….This morning I took my kids down to Bondi Beach to see the skating rink and eat banana bread. We had a FANTASTIC morning. My sister was there as well with her 2 kids. It was just super nice. Anyway, at about 12.15 (just now) I drove home, pulled into driveway, unloaded kids WENT TO UNLOAD PRAM……PRAMMMMMM….. Oh GOD, my double, massive, waiting listed, cost-a-damn-arm-and-a-leg PRAMMMMMM – I left it on the pavement….. AT BONDI!

Kids were EXHAUSTED and so happy to be home but I had to RELOAD THEM INTO THE CAR (9months and 2 years arch!) and drive back to Bondi PRAYING to the pram gods that it was still there!

    AND IT WAS!!

Busy busy, sunny, jam packed Bondi and there was my pram, untouched, just sitting there, waiting for Mumma to come and pick ‘er up.

Mamamia, I realise this is probably an impossible request, but could this website function if you discontinued any articles relating to parenting/babies/children etc? See, stupid question!

I just had a quick look at the Babies on Planes article and some of the replies are pretty ugly. As is the case with comments on just about every article relating to these topics.

I feel the recent (last year or so?) articles and comments on such topics cause such a bitter divide between the MM community. A real Us vs Them fight. A lot of the time both the article and comments are not even interesting points of view, they are just rude and spiteful.

I have been reading and commenting on Mamamia for over 3 years (this site was such a funny and wonderful discovery for me back then) but now its so different. I mostly end up only reading the light-hearted pieces for fear of what lies beneath in the comments. Makes me sad.

Yep, there was a good run of different stories not long ago.

Oooh… it’s a tricky one and obvioulsy my above comment just comes from a place of feeling sad (and a bit scared sometimes to be honest!) about the direction some articles and comments are going… and do you know what makes it worse? Is that some of the really offensive comments get me so riled up that I feel that it can bring out a not-so-sunny side of myself. Which I really don’t like. It’s not who I am. I will just to avoid such articles from now own. Which I am sure someone is sure to suggest to me anyway!

Totally hear you! I’ve started being more selective – not just because of the comments but because I have an inkling from the heading that a particular article might rub me up the wrong way. I stomp down on the indignation that flares up and avoid completely instead of rushing to comment angrily. Anything that looks heartwarming, considered, thought-provoking or just funny I zoom towards.

When it hits that place of resonance I am reminded why I still come here, even after periods of breaking up with it.

I don’t think you are being overly sensitive. My heart always breaks when I hear about people who desperately want children and can’t have them. I just can’t imagine the utter sadness that would cause.
I recently told someone off because they said “that couple should stop moaning about their life, go and have some kids and then they’ll be less self-involved”. I said “firstly, there is no guarantee that having kids will make someone less selfish, and would you want kids to have selfish parents? and secondly, and most importantly, perhaps they really want kids and can’t, and are filling their lives with other things so they don’t have to face that sadness every day”

      Hi Cordeline

Thank you for your message. I love it when people take the time to give such detailed and thoughtful feedback – it’s so helpful to us when we’re making decisions about what to run each day.

We try pretty hard to get a mix of stories that works. I think we manage to hit the mark most of the time but we can always do better. Some of those stories do tend to spark quite feisty debates, you’re right. And I think parenting styles and attitudes are things people tend to have very strong opinions about – hence the vigorous discussion.

But we try and mix those feisty posts with stories that are funny, some which are serious and thoughtful, some that educate us about issues, some that are more intimate and personal etc.

Today, for example we’ve got the piece about babies crying on planes but we’ve also got beauty tips with Zoe, a beautiful letter from a father to his stillborn son, a post about a family using a psychic to try and find their missing son and (my personal fav for today!) a post about the fictional characters we’d like to marry.

The site is growing though and as that happens we have to adapt the way we work. So we’re currently in the process of recruiting some community moderators, who will help keep the debates on track and ensure everyone is respectful and polite.

      All the very best,

But i’d question the value of zoe’s posts – there are a lot of AWESOME beauty editors out there, and i find i’ve stopped looking at her posts; posting photos on facebook & deodarant? there are so many other acutaly fluffy beauty things zoe could write about, and it’s a shame she’s stopped. it’d be great if you could find another beauty blogger (i’m sure lots would love to contribute!)

Thanks for taking the time to reply to this Jamila. And seriously, No offence to you Jamila at all. This is obviously what Mia has told you to write, but as a longtime reader of MM it is SO boring to read ‘we cover lots of different topics. Just today we’ve got x and y and z.’

Mia is not so great at listening to what the readers actually want. As much as she likes to think that it is the amazing content that keeps people coming back it’s not. At all. It’s the commenters. A lot of what is published is either reproduced from stuff we’ve already said or is asking our opinion.

Worst: my daughter {she’s 1} locked me out of the house this morning. I went out to the laundry making sure the fly screen door was closed but not locked and she slammed the main door closed. Cue absolute panic for about 15 minutes while she was stuck in the house without me. I was crying so hard and couldn’t breathe because I was so scared. I kept on talking to her to make sure she was okay and after trying to break a window I finally managed to get a crowbar type thing and open our tiny kitchen window of which I managed to climb through and not break any dishes {the window is right under our sink}. My daughter was fine, she actually found it funny, but it took me about an hour to stop sobbing and shaking. Gosh…

Being with Neighbourhood Watch for over 30 years has made me pretty savvy when it comes to hidey places for keys, outside the house.
The fake rocks are the first thing a burglar scans the garden close to your front door for. (After checking under the doormat, under potplants, above the door frame…)
Use fake rocks if you want, but pile OTHER rocks on top of it.
      Artistically.
Dig a hole in the garden (not necessarily close to your front/back door) – put your key in a little plastic bag in the hole, cover it over, and THEN put a couple of rocks on top to mark the spot. Or put a garden Buddha or ornament on top.
Or dig a hole in a pot plant, ditto the rocks.
      But remember, nothing’s infallible.

My husband bought a combination padlock that opens up for storing keys inside. When you get the 6 number combination right the front of the padlock opens up and the key is inside. It’s about the size of a normal padlock only hollow. I think we got ours at Bunnings.
I agree with people below, if you use a fake rock or a pot plant make sure they are nowhere obvious because it is the first place people look.

Worst – Thomas Kelly without a doubt. A few tears shed at my work desk reading the news & the Ben Fordham post.

Best – A friend designed some awesome pictures for framing on my bedroom wall. A perve on Tom Hardy in This Means War didn’t go down too badly either!

OMM – 10KM fun run on Sunday and ran 5km yesterday which hurt like hell…sunday could be tough

First time posting on Best & Worst so here goes…

Best: came home after spending a week down at my parents place in NSW. It was awesome to catch up with family and friends but still nice to come home to my partner. I think having a week apart was a good thing for us, I even had butterflies as I was driving up the driveway- nice feeling after being together for four years.

Worst- I was diagnosed with SLE (lupus) a few months ago and I’ve been sort of up and down since coming to terms with what this means for me and my future. My lupus is more effecting my joints and muscles so I’ve had swollen knees and shoulders on and off, swollen lymph nodes and just generally felt like shit! My rheumatologist has put me on a couple of different medications to try so we’ll just have to wait and see. Am having the day off work today, curled up on the couch with a cuppa and the Ellen show.

OMM- whether to buy or build and saving for a house deposit in general. The idea of just having 5-10% scares me and ideally we would like to have 20-30% but we;ve done our budget up for the year and redone it to see if we could save more money but at this rate it’s going to take us three years to save 20%. I know three years isn’t that long but it seems too long to keep renting. We live in Mackay so house prices up here are through the roof as it is so maybe thinking about buying a block of land and building. I would be interested to hear other Mamamia readers’ experiences about buying versus building and if building is really that more expensive in the long run. Also how did you save for a house deposit? Any tips would be appreciated!

Wishing everybody a happy and stress-free weekend :-)

I would wait until you save the 20%. You end up paying so much less in the long run (smaller loan = less interest to pay and if you don’t have enough deposit you have to pay an extra charge). Go to moneysmart.gov.au for confirmation. At least wait one more year and get closer to 20% – you never know what might happen in that time.

I’m in the same position as you atm (saving for a deposit) so take my advice for what its worth. My partner and I are aiming for 20% minimum. Purely because in the long run this will mean less interest to be paid and in this market with the threat of negative equity it makes us feel a little more secure.

As for whether to buy or build, I personally am going to buy established because I want to live in a inner city suburb. If you don’t mind living further out and there’s places to build, and you want to build, do it. My friends that have built in fringe suburbs in Melbourne found it to be a drawn out sometimes frustrating process but worth it in the end.

Building can be cheaper in the short term if you want to enter the property market in a hurry, but be really careful. 3 of my mates who are tradies recently told me (separately) that brand new houses often tend to be built in such a rush and with so many corners cut that they often need more maintenance than houses several decades older. Things like massive cracks in the wall because foundations weren’t set properly, etc.

Long term, I personally believe you can get better ROI if you renovate an existing property. Of course, it all depends on location, etc.

      Good luck!

hi Caitlin, sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you’re unwell. Was it hard to find out what you have? Did the rheumatologist find it?

Reason I’m asking is that I became very seirously ill some years ago and had a crap gp who was useless. I was so sick for so long and I did some research and all the symptoms were lupus. I am well now and dont’ have any episodes, although this week I had very weak arms which was one of the symptoms.

Anyway hope you feel better soon xx

Best: Offspring finale delivered the goods. Oh, how I adore Patrick!

OMM: This article in yesterday’s Advertiser really disturbed me, because I adore my dogs (yes, even more than Patrick).

    http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/opinion/pets-are-fantastic-companions-but-they-are-not-people/comments-e6freabc-1226423764987

My screen name of ‘fifi-lulu’ is actually what a friend of mine used to call my doggies (not their real names).

Yes, they are inside dogs who rule the roost.
Yes, they are lap dogs and heat junkies that hog the heater in winter.
Yes, they are gorgeous balls of white fluff that I call my ‘entourage’ – they follow me everywhere.
Yes, their love is unconditional and I can tell them anything.
Yes, they sleep on my bed.
Yes, they are trained and obedient.

Yes, when my 11 year old maltese shitzu was put down in my arms it was undoubtedly the worst day of my life.

Hey Fifi – I love dogs – in fact I have one at my feet but I think there is loving dogs – and there is loving dogs….

I’m going to Europe for three weeks with a friend who has a much loved dog .
Hers sleeps IN her bed with her – not on the bed – IN the bed.
She won’t contemplate a kennel for his care while she is away – she’s desperately seeking a house-sitter who will allow the dog on the bed (even she draws a line at ‘in’ the bed).
When we’re at her house, she includes the dog in our conversations.
She talks about the dog like he’s human (‘I asked Bluey if he wanted to go to the beach’)
She’s single – and we joke that she’ll stay single as long as Bluey is in the bed with her! :)

I think the author of that article is plain miserable. How is it hurting her if another table has a dog with them and they feed it?!!! For Gods sake, stay at home people if you can’t cope with dogs, children, traffic, noise etc.

There are so many miserable people in this world who will complain about anything and everything.

We are the lucky ones, who have amazing dogs who we adore and they us. Those miserable people are uptight and they sadly miss out on so much.

I feel sorry for people like her as she will never know the incredible love, joy, loyalty that a dog will give you. They are the ones to be pitied.

Best: I have been dogsitting this week and it has been absolutely delightful. The dog I look after is very affectionate but also very cheeky so things are great 80% of the time and pretty bad for the other 20. Just the way I like it:)

Worst: Feeling sluggish in the mornings, I am pretty sure the sinusitis is making a comeback so I am fighting it with lemons and lots of tea.

OMM: Happiness. All it takes is some sunshine and blue skies. Which I have been getting lots of this week.

Worst: Day six of being in bed with the worst flu, Dr thinks it is true influenza waiting on test results (nasal swab which I swear touched my brain!) to confirm. I haven’t been hit this hard by illness for a long time. Feel bad for my three boys, not a fun way to spend second week of the school hols with mummy in bed :(

Best: My hubby and mum jumping in to look after the boys! Hubby cancelled a business trip interstate and mum has been an angel. As I’ve mentioned before, we just moved to Sydney (where my mum lives) and this is the first time I have had family around to help in times like this. It is amazing! So a big shout out to my mum and hubby!

OMM I should’ve had the bloody flu vax!

Question, can anyone tell me how to change my username for this site? I chose something random when I very first joined and it not the name I always use to comment now. I’d like to change it so that I can be me and comment logged in!

Too funny – i had the same swab and said the same thing… i swear it touched my brain – awful!
I did have the flu vax and still ended up with the awful lurgy. Clearly a strain not covered by the vax… or a less evil version of the flu possibly but i have still been feeling terrible for way too long. (not bed ridden for 6 days though – so that could be a positive of having the jab!) Problem was… because I had the vax I didn’t think I had the flu – treated it as a bad cold… and tried to soldier on. Best thing would have been to retreat to bed for a few days. Symptoms have been lingering for near on 4 weeks now!
Also pregnant so can’t really take any ‘hard stuff’… this winter has been such a germy one already.
      Hope you’re better soon!

Worst: Trivial, but my favourite player (and probably the most dangerous in the team) for my NRL team is injured for their game tonight!

Love to all those doing it tough xx

Absolute best (and a TMI warning): A sudden respite and perhaps remission from chronic pain! I’m embracing being able to exercise, walk aimlessly for as long as I want and best of all – A SURGE IN LIBIDO!!! Laughter is truly a great aphrodisiac. My man was just being silly and had me in fits of giggles last night and went down while we were both in hysterics – resulting in the best orgasm I’ve had for a long time…

Worst: Hmmmm…been a pretty terrific week, really. I went to see my counsellor on Monday and cried a lot of shit out. I didn’t think it had helped at all but I’m definitely feeling more optimistic than I have in recent weeks. Trying to be patient (not really a strength of mine) and remind myself that there’s still plenty of time for us to get our baby wish…

OMM: Can anyone please tell me (roughly) how much rebate you get from HBF for IVF treatments? It’s going to cost me almost $600 a year more ($1700 total) to upgrade from my basic hospital cover and there’s a 12 month waiting period before being able to claim. I’m thinking it’s expensive but probably worth it…Thanks for the advice

Best: Head to Adelaide early Sunday morning to spend the week with the family. I’ve never been before and am looking forward to exploring Kangaroo Island and the Barossa Valley. My sister and I are also planning a ‘Chocolate Day’ and hope to visit many of the chocolate cafes. I’ve also enjoyed buying some ‘winter stuff’. We don’t really get winter up here in the Top End, so I have loved buying some awesome knits and boots. Kind of a waste of money though considering I’m only going for one week…

Worst: Because I’m going away and my whole family is coming too, my gorgeous furbaby will spend the next week at a kennel (they refer to themselves as a Pet Resort though, so that should be a good sign). She has never stayed at a kennel before so I’m a bit nervous for her. I’m worry about what she will think when I drop her off. Will she think I’ve ditched her? Will she get worried when I don’t come back after a few hours (like when she gets groomed)? Will she eat? Will she sleep? Will the other dogs like her? I know she will be fine and this particular kennel has rave reviews (and costs a small fortune – $300 for 7 nights, wow), but I still worry. While I’m sure I will have an awesome time on my holiday, I can’t wait until when I come back so I can pick her up and bring her home.

OMM: Work. I’m a teacher and am currently on 4 weeks holidays (in the NT our midyear break goes for 4 weeks). We go back to work soon and while I love my job, the last semester was horrendous. I have reflected a lot and have some new strategies I plan to implement, but I still find myself thinking the worst, and I just don’t know if I can survive another semester like the one I just had…

Best 1#: After a HORRIBLE week of being off sick, then coming back into work and stacking it in public, banging up my knee really badly, then getting an eye infection out of the blue!…..I am finally on the mend and it’s Friday.

I had been having a horrible time with my hormones the past few years. So out of character for my body. I ended up really depressed and fearing my period because I knew what was coming.

By chance I injured my shoulder during weights training and ended up avoiding the gym for 6 weeks to let it heal. In that time I stopped eating meat as I wasn’t hungry and craving my usual protein.

Turns out by elliminating meat, my hormones have changed dramatically!! I had my period twice in those 6 weeks and when I realised the only change I had made had been removing meat I couldn’t believe how wonderful I felt. It has been years since my body and my brain felt this stable.

I’m not saying meat is the cause of all our hormone problems (more specifically red meat for me) but it is worth investigating further.

        Hi Melissa,
Thank you for responding to what i wrote. I have to admit i feel very alone with my hormone imbalance (because you can’t see it does it really exist…). Mine has been diagnosed as Oestrogen Dominance and ive suffered with it on and off for 10 years. Im taking a 6 weeks break from work because im pretty sure the excessive ostrogen is a symptom of adrenal fatigue which is why im not getting better because ive never treated the root of the problem. Anyway im going off all my vitamins etc and am going to try and heal myself with rest and good food.
Thank you for the advice i dont eat a lot of red meat so it should be easy to cut out completely and see if i notice a change.
