Cameron Diaz for Esquire

by REBECCA SPARROW

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

A Hollywood actress turns 40. And to celebrate the milestone, she decides to peel off her top, unzip her jeans and pose for a series of  in-your-face sexy photos while gushing about how comfortable she now is in her own skin.

Yes, yes Jennifer Anistan, Kylie Minogue, Catherine Zeta Jones, Cameron Diaz, I’m looking at you. Well, I’m looking at your boobs actually, Cameron  SINCE THEY’RE IN MY FACE in your Esquire Magazine photoshoot.

I like Cameron Diaz. She looks like the type of woman  I’d want to sit next to in the booth on a girls night out. The type of girl who’d drag you onto the dance floor when Super Freak comes on. The type of girl who’d shout you all your margaritas if it were your birthday and happily eschew any male attention in favour of hanging out with her gal pals and workshopping life’s current conundrums. As a female friend, I suspect she’s tops.

But I’m a little over this need for actresses to pose like Benny Hill throwbacks when they turn 40.

Because those images of Diaz  bending over (OH COME ON!) on the cover of a men’s mag, cancel out any of the interesting insights she offers up in the Esquire interview.   Diaz makes a salient point about marriage. But it’s kinda lost. Because her insights are incongruous with the images of the actress posing with her legs open.

Do I get that Hollywood is a morally bankrupt place? Yes. Do I get that actresses feel all kinds of insane pressure to ‘prove’ they still look like Hotty McHottersons  once they’re too old to play the role of the babe/girlfriend in movies? Yes.

cameron diaz esquire cover Hollywood, ageing and the f*ckability factor.

Cameron on the cover of Esquire

But it’s a vicious circle. And if female celebs continue to pitch themselves as men’s mag meat it only serves to reinforce the notion that a woman’s value is measured solely by her looks. That when you turn 40 (or 30 or 50) all that truly matters is that you still have “f*ckability” factor.

Every other achievement is razored.

So you’ve just turned 40? Who cares that you’re fluent in Spanish?  That you volunteered for a year in the Northern Territory?  That you had your heart broken at 27. But learned to love living alone by 35.  What does it matter that you fulfilled a dream to learn how to surf. That you have achieved real career fulfillment. That you paint in your spare time.  Or sing.  Or bake.

All that matters as a woman is that you look smokin’ in a pair of hot pants. And that men still want to root you.

Or maybe I’m wrong.  Maybe I’m just bitter.

I’m forty, too. And I don’t look like Cameron Diaz. I look like I ate Cameron Diaz.

I have the hips of Wilma Flintstone and the arse of Fred’s.

But I don’t think it’s jealousy, I’m feeling. It’s weariness.

You want to celebrate turning 40 by having some gorgeous, sexy photos taken? Knock yourself out! Seriously.  I love to see photos of women celebrating how they look and positively redefining what it means to be getting older. I have no issue with that. But a men’s mag, Cameron?  Posing like a porn star for the cover of a men’s mag?   You’re better than that.  Let me buy you a margarita and we’ll talk it through …

See more of Cameron’s pics + other covers of celebs over 40:

What do you think of these photographs?  Sexy? Or a bit tacky?  How important is it to you to look ‘hot’ when you turn 40 (or hit any other birthday milestone)?

God, that photo (legs spread tongue hanging out) is embarrassing. Just cringe making. Yep, she is entitled to do as she pleases, and I am entitled to wince and think “ew”.

This is really not okay, this entire article, every word used, the judging, the unnecessary “feminist” viewpoint.
Bec, you may be a feminist and believe that posing for men’s magazines is wrong. I, however, am not. Cameron Diaz can do whatever she likes with her body, whatever she likes to do to make herself feel sexy.
She wanted to make some extra money, she knows she’s appealing to a male audience (and a female one, I’m straight but hello, Cam! Nice photos!), so she’s chosen to do this photo shoot.
Hell, if I have a body like that when I’m 40, you bet your ass I’ll pose that like for a men’s mag for some extra cash.

You’re so right. Beautifully written and spot on what most women feel … If they allow themselves to feel that is. And Cameron’s photos look uncomfortable. She looks better running into the surf with a surfboard and no makeup.

Cameron looks hot, she can pose any way, for any mag that she wishes. It is her body, her life, her choices & her career.

What happened to the sisterhood? Why are so many so critical of other women`s choices?

Ok, so, the URL for this article is Mamamia slash social slash “another-hollywood-actress-turns-40-and-poses-like-a-hooker-to-celebrate”
I’ve got to say that doesn’t sit well with me. It feels bitchy and nasty and hardly representative of the values that Mamamia espouses. I don’t think comments like that are conducive to the sort of dinner party conversation that I would want to be a part of.
Sorry to be a wet blanket, but it really bothers me. I appreciate that the title of the article doesn’t read that way now, so hopefully that’s a sign that you guys realised there were better ways to title the article.

see its very simple… diaz’s life happens to be (oh get this one) her life, what she chooses to do with it is (wait for it) her decision…

being a woman is about choice…. if that choice is to strip down and be half naked in a photoshoot then let the woman do it for god sake..
This sort of ‘slut bullying’ is so common and ridiculous.
it’s only further dis-empowering us as women because once again we are acting out of fear and judgement and condemning others.

the thing about being feminist is …its about choice….
    it’s about variety and colours..
we women are complex beautiful things…
we are mothers, we are human rights activists, we are doctors, teachers, creatives, artists, daughters, sisters, dancers, nuns, sluts, saints and sinners

it’s our variety that makes us fucking great
our criticism isnt serving us, there is nothing enlightening about it…
let’s stop the criticizing and use our minds and writing talents and opinions and put them towards something constructive and positive…
what we give attention to expands … what do you want to see??

Personally I think these photographs are a bit trashy and exhibitionist regardless of age, gender or which magazine it is. It makes no difference to me whether it is Deb Hutton on the front of Women’s Weekly or Nicole Kidman for Zoo magazine. And I don’t particularly feel any sense of pity about it either. The celebrities who do it make their own adult decisions to do it and are happy to attract attention/publicity/controversy. None of the featured women are new to taking their clothes of for publicity and money – age has absolutely nothing to do with it, and neither does the magazine. And I certainly don’t think any of these women have a problem with insecurity or give a hoot what anyone else thinks.

I also don’t believe it is women pitching themselves as “men’s mag meat” that reinforces the notion that looks are the only thing that matter. It is women’s magazines that are the worst. No-one compares themselves to tacky images in men’s magazines, most women don’t even read men’s magazines. A case in point is the MM website. Even on articles about looks not being important, there is still fashion items scrolling along the bottom advertising MM shopping. It is advertising and fashion modelling that sells us the idea that it matters what we look like. Don’t turn this article into a platform to complain about men’s magazines Bec – you are perfectly capable of showing more critical insight than that.

Hollywood seems like a very, very crazy place. I am 27 years old. I would be mortified to have pictures like these taken of me (you never know where they will end up), never mind for a magazine! And my figure is pretty good. I wonder what is running through Cameron’s mind…she doesnt need to do this for attention or to become more famous…she has that already. Where is the sanity?

I find the photographs really, really quite trashy. Why does everyone want to look so pornographic these days. Not that I’m against pornography, but since when did that become the benchmark for sexiness, so obvious and blatant. Hope when I’m 40 I don’t feel the need to be a carbon copy. I’d hope I’d be more self assured than that.

I’d like to see a picture of all the people responsible for these pictures: hair stylists, colorists, makeup artists, beauticians, plastic surgeons, personal trainers, personal chefs, dieticians, hair removal technicians, manicurists, photographers, lighting technicians, people who do photoshop after the photos are taken.
These photos are tacky and a bit sad. Ms Diaz is 40, but I always feel, when watching her or reading interviews, that she has not allowed herself to be a grown up. These pictures reinforce that for me.

As a 37yr old woman who looks more like ‘Cameron’ from Modern family than ‘Cameron Diaz’, I really don’t have a problem with it. I don’t think her age is relevant – and besides, it’s hard to depict fluency in Spanish or a year in the Northern Territory in photo :) Yes, the poses look a little…low IQ…but other than that I think it’s just a bit of fun. Truth be told, if we all had access to the stuff these women do, we’d give them a realistic run for their money anyway, Wilma hips included!

Yes yes yes! Or something that sounds a bit less sexual…

I get fantasy, but who buys this stuff? Because I would buy a mag with Johnny depp on the cover, but not if he was making a sex face and poking his doodle suggestively at the camera. Just weird!! Do men really think Cameron Diaz is like that at home, or are they just less complicated when it comes to fantasy? Because for me, it needs to be a little less far fetched.

I don’t think Cameron Diaz is that much in the looks department, (smoking body though). But when she’s interviewed she seems sexy as hell, because she seems like so much fun. I would have thought that was a whole lot more appealing than seeing her spreading her legs like every actress model or porn star ever in the universe.

It’s not real life, no one does this, so things like this never bother me nor do they surprise me. I’m 28 and understand this is not normal, people don’t do this on their birthday. • It’s not about that, it’s the fact that women in their 40s in Hollywood shouldn’t feel the need to validate themselves by taking their gear off for a magazine.

My comment was in response to commenters below who say they’re sick of seeing the pictures. My point is, you’re the ones seeking them out. It’s pretty easy to not see photoshoots in foreign magazines if you don’t go looking.

I don’t know why anyone would assume this is about getting validation because she’s 40. Diaz has done dozens of similar photoshoots in her career. A lot of actresses like her try to pretend their the next Meryl Streep when they hit 40, when their whole career before that has been about silly movies where they played the funny, hot girl. I actually find it refreshing that Diaz is confident enough to just keep doing what she likes doing. An insecure actress would be desperately trying to snap some serious roles, Diaz has to confidence to assume she can still play sexy roles in her 40′s.

Also men do do this. Tom Cruise is notorious for it, and the success of an actor like Matthew McConaughey, who’s had a similar career to Diaz’s, depends more on his 6-pack than his talent.

I suppose that’s a point to make – we don’t know what their motivations are for doing these shoots apart from the obvious being publicity & cash. Cameron looks very porn-starish and sexually aggressive in some of these – nothing cute about her. On the contrary, Jennifer A is playing the cute girl next door, in the nude (as you do). Totally different messages. Either way, they’re confident! But its been going on for ages – Marilyn did nudes as did how many others? They’ve just shifted the age bracket.

        • I actually think that nude or overly provocative photos in Hollywood are becoming so stupidly common place these days that I think I’d be knocked over with a feather if a celebrity (other than Taylor Swift lol) posed in a daisy field with a knee length casual frock on, with bare make up and flat shoes!!!

I do think that the “look at me I’m 40 and still hot” appears to be seeking some form of validation. Hollywood is not kind to ageing stars and it seems to be a repeated thing – female actresses hit 40 and BAM nude on the cover of a magazine.

        • I don’t – I’m saying that the outrage and Bec’s piece about these pictures is not simply solvable by “not clicking” or “not buying the magazine” .

Because the outrage from the comments and from the article is moreso focused on the fact that actresses generally seem to hit 40 and feel the need to get their gear off for a magazine cover – I didn’t say it was Cameron Diaz specifically “seeking validation” – it appears to be a female Hollywood thing where even seemingly serious actresses like Nicole Kidman do it once they hit 40 too, and it seems for no other reason than to be like “I’M 40 AND I’M STILL A COMPLETE BAAAAAAAABEEEEE”. That to me, seems like seeking validation.

But yes, I do take the point that Cameron Diaz has previously posed in these types of mens magazines. But it doesn’t seem to be the done thing by Nicole Kidman, so that’s why it comes off as validation seeking.

Nicole Kidman has also done many mens mag shoots. Do a google search for “Nicole Kidman GQ” or “Nicole Kidman lingerie”. She was all over the place in the 90′s when she did The Blue Room and then later after her divorce.

The fact that people only take notice and see it as sad and desperate AFTER these women have turned 40 says far more about how people view older women than said women doing a photoshoot does.

I find the last statement (about the E cups) kind of silly.

I’m sorry that my wearing a singlet or a shirt that shows off my cleavage annoys you. Seriously, girls with big boobs know that anything you put on will look more ‘sexy’ if you have big boobs; it’s a fact that annoys me too sometimes. But then I hear women saying what you just did and it makes me feel even worse about my body and my boobs. And if you can come up with a suitable method for me to ‘put them away’, I might just do that. Maybe a garbage bag?

Just know that girls with big boobs wearing shirts that look ‘sexy’ aren’t all showing them off for the men. Some – yes. But a lot – they just want to get away from the staring.

Please dont address comments that I clearly did not make. I would never write or say anything even remotely like that.

Just for the record I have E cups and know damn well everything that goes along with having them. Thanks!

In fairness to Alice A, it was unclear what you meant. I also thought you were talking about E cup boobs, not a flat actress who magically gets boobs overnight (“I just put on a kilo and they grew naturally! I guess I’m just a late bloomer!”)

I now understand your comment, and it totally bugs me too! Like when people (Nicole Kidman, Kylie, Jen Hawkins, I’m looking at you!) claim they’ve never had work done, but magically have bigger lips and tighter skin than they did 10 years ago.

            Other Alice,
Bec’s article began … Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.
A Hollywood actress turns 40. And to celebrate the milestone …’
That is the ‘them’ I was referring to.

Next time I will stop laughing before I type.

What you wrote is so right. It’s sad when they claim they have had nothing done. Between that and photoshop I don’t think we know what many actors and actresses look like.

P.S I wish a kilo would come off my boobs magically overnight.

Thank for finding my other comment Mary.

Alice I believe the comment was made in regards to the article and Hollywood actresses.

        Not your assets.

Great article Bec I tend to agree and with you also Teal.

I thought Teal was referring more to the fact that so many large breasted Hollywood types pretend they are all au naturel, when they are simply not, and have had lots of surgery to achieve gigantic breasts. Not to people having big breasts, in general, but to the lies Hollywood types tell about their bodies while desperately parading as much of them as possible for our attention. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s how I took it.

I love how you described them as ‘mens mag meat’, because that ‘s what it really boils down to when you have to be photographed with your legs spread , bending over, squatting or any of the other cheesy positions they can think of. Yes, you look good, but you can take sexy photos without showing us what you had for dinner.

Cameron Diaz has done dozens of mens mags photoshoots in her career. You’ll find at least one each year. This isn’t even the sexiest/most revealing.

What I find bothersome is that we expect women over 40 to suddenly put it away and never be overtly sexual. Actresses and models like Diaz, Jennifer Aniston, Claudia Schiffer, Sharon Stone (all people Mamamia has called out for doing sexy photoshoots) have all made their looks and sexuality a big part of their persona throughout their careers. Why would/should they completely change their image because they had a birthday. They’re all still gorgeous, sexy women.

I really, really don’t have a problem with women of ANY age — doing photoshoots and challenging stereotypes about growing older. I’m all for gorgeous photos of everyone from Emma Stone to Judi Dench.
But I find the whole bending over, legs open, tongue out photos to be fairly grotesque.

And I’ll go so far as to say I think it’s the trickle down effect from the porn industy and that increasingly these types of images of women (and it’s only ever women) is becoming normalised. I mean, come on! BENDING OVER? And having your legs spread open and your tongue out????

Cameron Diaz is a gorgeous woman. But I think some of those photos are anything but.

If your only issue is with the style of the pictures, why make reference to Diaz’s age in almost every paragraph? This month alone there are at least 10 similar new photoshoots done by famous actresses and pop stars that could have illustrated an article about hyper-sexualised images. For some reason you have focused solely on Diaz, and the fact that you make such a big deal of the fact she’s 40 naturally leads me to assume that’s why her photoshoot has been singled out from all those done by younger women.

Oh noes!!!!! I didn’t name my beautiful 10 yo daughter Cameron after Cameron Diaz (it’s a family name) but I kinda liked that they shared it, because I quite liked Ms Diaz- she was sporty (a surfer, like my girl) and cool and didn’t seem hung up on all that celebrity crap, she didn’t have implants, she was happy to be single but she also dated some gorgeous guys- she was herself, take it or leave it. But I’m saddened that she’s gone down such a predictable, homogenous path. It would have been far more subversive and brave if she’d let herself be photographed with no makeup/photoshopping or- hey, why not- posing with a zimmer frame and grey hair, poking fun at our obsession with age. To my mind, that would be far more interesting way than these bland, ten-a-penny shots. Show us your mind, Cam. That’s always far more intriguing than yet another tight arse.

Personally, I’d appreciate more shots of women who I could relate to. I don’t have a problem with women making choices for themselves about how they present publicly – its their choice. But I reckon it should be shown in the context of how they achieved that ‘look’ or ‘body’ or a forehead without any character marks – so the 40hrs a week in the gym/yoga/pilates studio’s, the carefully manicured diet (because they have the resources to make that happen), the cosmetic enhancements, that make-up & the angle of shot from the professional photographer (and photoshop) – all of this helps them to look amazingly like a 30 year old at 40. It’s dangerous when its taken out of context because without that backstory of the journey to get there, these bodies are unattainable to many.

Now that’s an article I would read MM! Take a celebrity when they wake up first thing and show us step by step how those images are created – sweaty workout with frizzy hair, super healthy breakfast, an hour in the make up hair, lighting and photoshopping. Step by step.

I think celebrities posing in their undies when they turn 40 is the same as celebs posing in their bikini’s 3 weeks after having a baby.

I think it’s great if you look like that at 40 (or minutes after pushing out a baby) but it’s pointless. You could photoshop someone elses head onto Cameron’s body, it wouldn’t make a difference.

Also, I don’t find that sexy. I know it’s sexy in an obvious way (in the ”I’m bending over in my hotpants and staring deep into your eyes” kinda way) but why be so obvious? In saying all that, she has an amazing body and looks great. I just think she could have taken a few nice shots wearing some incredible dresses and not had her boobs and butt out and she’d still look amazing.

I think some celebs feel like when they a certain age they need to affirm that they are still ‘hot’ and can keep up with girls half their age in order to remain relevant.

I agree. And I think living in Hollywood must be the ultimate ‘mind game’. Because in truth — Hollywood doesn’t care if an actress at 40 has achieved all kinds of things. They don’t even care if you’re that good an actor. They just care that you look hot on camera.

And I cannot imagine the pressure all those over 40 actresses must feel to look a certain way. I feel sorry for them. But at the same time, I don’t think doing these men’s mag shoots help their cause.
