It’s that time of the week again – Mamamia TV is on Sky News at 9:15pm tonight. Block out your diary or set your Foxtel IQ because this week’s show is set to be a cracker. (If you miss it, it will be repeated on Saturday at 2:15pm).
Our guests around the table this week are Caroline Overington (author, journo), Sarah Hanson Young (Greens senator), Nigel Marsh (author, advertising guru) and Sam de Brito (author and columnist).
Some of the things we’re talking about are sex in the kitchen, the London riots, asylum seekers, Penny Wong and Fred Nile’s comments.
Here’s what Fred Nile said this week:
Speaking of same sex marriage, we’re also talking about the protest movement supporting them – we’ve put together a gallery of the best signs from the protests, take a look here..

And the Floor Interview (as it has become known) is with Jessica Rudd. She’s talking about her Dad’s operation, Julia Gillard and her OWN new found fame as an award-winning author. Here’s the full interview:
Here’s the promo….

After week 1 of the new format, show 2 was a bit of an anti-climax. Again, no one was allowed to finish their point before being interrupted. Very annoying !
The interview with Jessica Rudd was not my favourite part of the show. Okay, we get it, Mia. You and Jess are BFFs. That’s great. That’s fantastic. As I say, we get it. However long it ran for, the IV was little more than padding between the beginning and the end of the program. Consider the term “Christmas Stocking Stuffer”. You know that all of the good pressies are at the bottom, but you have to unwrap the plastic toys from the two dollar shop and packs of chewing gum before you get to them. I found the interview tedious and little more than pre-promotion for her next book. Apart from a brief reference to her father’s recent opperation, Jessica said nothing that she didn’t say on your very first program when she was a panelist.
I realise that the IV was shot on a mounted handycam in limited space, so I’m not expecting a Stephen Spielberg production. The one angle shot for such a long period was off putting. I found that I had to keep on looking away in order to keep listening. Again, you shot in limited space but I kept on wondering if you could get any closer to Jessica. Perhaps consider sitting in front of the guest in future circumstances. The IV is after all about the guest. Only Benny Hill had to be in EVERY shot.
Please, oh please….make program three the jewel in the crown. No interrupting and no lengthy commercials for future book releases disguised as interviews.
Other than that, Sam de Brito was the undoubted star of the evening. That man could recite his shopping list and make it sound fascinating. Someone might consider offering him a show.

I think he likes me.

You betcha!

So love the new format, I would have to disagree sorry, with the talking, I found it too be a bit quite like it didn’t flow. Mia would say something then either no one said anything kinda awkward or took a while to respond. Just would like that honest discussing like Mia does
But apart from that good topics!
Really liked Jess, what a very lovely down to earth chick!

Vote 1 Joe Hildebrand!!!

I missed last week’s show but caught this week’s on the replay and I really dug it – like the table format much more, and in spite of all the debate about them here I really enjoyed this week’s guests.
Two very important questions though-
1) where can I get myself a MamaMia mug?
2) will Ruby Blues be out on Kindle at the same time as the book?
loading...
Yes’m. You’ll be able to buy Ruby Blues in any format you like. I’ll even write it on parchment for you if you’d prefer. Conditions apply.

Love love love those gay marriage protest signs, they are fantastic and alot of them are so so strue!
I’m a happilly married mother of 3 with 4 step children and I would be proud to march in any gay rights parade with any of them. Fred Nile unfortunately has just been brought up the way he thinks and the unfortunate thing is that he honestly believes in 100% opf everything he said with passion and simply wont be swayed for anything. its the mentality we need to change and it may not be until these older generations have passed until gay marriage does become more acceptable in society.

Loved the show, love the new around the around-the-table panel format, liked this week’s show more than last, I felt there was less talking over the top of each other so I could hear everyone better.
Really enjoyed this week’s panel guests and the Jess Rudd interview (how can you not smile when you see her, an ultimate sweetheart, can’t wait for her new book!).
Was it just me or did Sky News start the show a few minutes early, therefore the beginning of the show was cut off on the recording?
loading...
I also taped the show on IQ and missed about the first 5 mins
loading...
I would suggest going into the settings and changing the time to start recording ten minutes before.
(I apologise in advance If you’d already thought to do this and it still stuffed up)

I tuned in last night after missing last week. I like the new format but found the content somewhat repetitive most topics have already been covered on the website. Also I think the panel is too big too many people talking across each other.
Congratulations on an interesting show though for those who haven’t read the site it would have been great fun and very informative.
Jess was great

I saw another really good sign from a gay rights protest, except I can’t find it/remember it word for word. I think it was outside an abortion clinic where the usual crowd were protesting, and someone had a sign reading ‘If you save a foetus and it turns out to be gay, will you still campaign to protect it’s rights?’

Loved watching the Jessica Rudd video in bed eating chocolate coated almonds..yum
Perfect way to end the week. Loved Campaign Ruby and looking forward to Ruby Blues. I like how she described her writing process and letting her characters write themselves – this is always a hard concept for non-writers to understand and I think she summed it up beautifully.

You had me at chocolate-coated almonds.

Ah man I forgot to record it…..loved the interview with Jess Rudd that you posted though.
Every time I see the pic of Mia at the desk on the home page, I think it’s Julia Gillard. Sorry – think it must be the orange background throwing onto the bob together with the white jacket.
loading...
I thought exactly the same! And thought ‘wow, fantastic getting the PM on!’ It’s the trademark white jacket definitely! I read an article about Julia’s clever use of it the other day.

Golly….I’ve just been turned off this weeks show !
Sarah Hanson-Young…the Left’s version of Prue McSween. Best of luck trying to stop her talking over the top of the rest of the panel, Mia.
Caroline Overington again ! Jessica Rudd again ! Sam de Brito, well he’s good value. Always find his comments extremely honest and interesting. He’s worth listening to because he brings such a varied life experience to the table. When he speaks, you know that he has been there and done that. It’s the voice of experience and it has my ear.
You’ve hit the floor running with the first episode of series two. When I say how good I found the show last week, I’m being 100% honest. You have found the right format but you will kill this golden goose if you don’t mix up the panel a bit. When will we get the token Rightie ? Tonight, Prue McSween up against SH-Y would have been champagne television, and French vintage champagne at that.
Don’t forget to give me my death stare and friendly wave tonight, Mia !
loading...
Yep, you could do a lot worse than Sam de Brito. He reminds me of the kind of bloke who gets busted talking during a meditation retreat.
Shhh!
loading...
ha ha so true!
loading...
ha! You want Pru Macsween Bradley> WHY? We’re interested in conversations not shouting matches or ranting diatribes!
It’s harder than you think to find someone from the right who is also good at (and willing to be on) TV.
Suggestions please?
Also, it’s not really a political show…….
loading...
I’ll go for broke….Ita !
Surely you’re pally with at least one rightie journo/author ? It becomes a political show when you discuss issues from a political point of view, be they leftist or rightist views.
Are you sure that you can’t get Pru this late in the day ? Still would love to see her and SH-Y take each other on in a verbal stoush. Perhaps a special edition program ?
Don’t forget my death stare !
loading...
I’ll definitely put in a vote for Ita – absolutely love her!
Can’t wait for the web version of show (for the non-cable guys)

Mia, I am very grateful the show isn’t in Melbourne so that there is no chance you’ll have Andrew Bolt on the show. And if you don’t know who he is – trust me, keep it that way.
loading...
Aren’t people from Melbourne allowed to travel to Sydney or vice versa ?
You haven’t heard of the term, “Via satellite” ? People sitting in a studio in Los Angeles can appear live on TV show broadcast out of Sydney.
I’m sure that Andrew and Mia would make interesting guests on each others programs. All that stands in the way is an invitation.
loading...
Okay, if Andrew Bolt can appear via satellite from Melbourne, then I want John Birmingham on the same show, via satellite from Qld. Hehehe
loading...
Can you set this up for us please, Rick ?:)
loading...
Hells to the yeah!
loading...
Except, of course, Bolt is contracted to another network!
loading...
Ask nicely, then !
loading...
Would LOVE to see Andrew Bolt & Rick in a climate change debate!
loading...
I’d take him on happily…
loading...
Andrew Bolt….if you are reading this comment, please invite Rick onto your show to debate this issue.
He has indicated that he will accept the invitation.
I’d still prefer to see Pru & SH-Y lock horns, though.
loading...
I have never believed that Andrew Bolt can actually believe the stuff he writes. Surely he is just writing that S*&T to get a reaction? No one is that right wing to think that way surely – reading anything he writes makes me want to vomit.
loading...
I’ll state the obvious for you, shall I ? Andrew Bolt is as entitled to his opinion as you are to yours.
As for vomiting when you read anything that he writes…don’t read what he writes. All of that stomach acid will rot away your tooth enamel and once it’s gone, it’s gone.
No doubt your statement will impress many, but for my money it makes you sound like a bit of a brat. But that’s my opinion.
loading...
What about David Oldfield?!
loading...
Piers Akerman? Tim Blair? Ray Hadley? Miranda Devine? Janet Albrechtsen? Amanda Vanstone?
loading...
I actually don’t mind Janet but I agree that it’s not a political show..
I vote for Joe Hildebrand!!
loading...
When you are discussing mainly political issues on a TV program….yes, you have a political TV show, Rose.
loading...
I see your point, but just because it discusses political issues doesn’t make it a ‘political’ show.
I think MM is much broader than just talking about politics but it has to hit its stride first. I think a different panel each week would mix it up a bit – while I adore Caroline Overington and Sam De Britto I’ve heard their opinions, we need new people.
loading...
Rose, I actually reckon that you would make an interesting guest. I find your comments interesting and fair dinkum, and above all else…you aren’t flogging a book !
loading...
Haha… thanks Bradley. I find your comments refreshing to read each day.
I might not be flogging a book but I might flog my blog… just a bit !
loading...
Miranda Devine! please
loading...
Really? I can’t stand reading her columns.
loading...
Enough Caroline Overington. I just don’t get it with her. She dosent really add much on the panel ( including last season)
loading...
I think this actually demomstrates how narrow your network of contacts must be, Mia. Do you ever listen to Counterpoint on ABC Radio National?
