Where were you at this time last year?

Learning how to use a washing machine. That’s me this time last year. I was getting ready to pack up my life and move to the country for a new job – and that meant I was also moving out of home for the first time.

This year for me has been a lot about career and personal growth. I started the year as a journalist at a small regional newspaper in country Victoria and I’m ending it as a writer for Mamamia in Sydney.

A lot can happen in a year.

It’s been quite a whirlwind adventure for me. I’ve been pushed to extremes – both professionally and personally. When I started the year I wondered how I would ever survive as a city girl in the country and now I’m wondering if I ever would have got to where I am now without that nine months of experience of living in the country.

I’ve learnt how to make friends in a new place. I’ve learnt how hard it is to be away from old friends. I’ve learnt that NOTHING goes with red carpet (except red wine) and I’ve learnt that it’s important to never stand in front of an open flame unless your hair is tightly tied back.

Most of all, I’ve learnt that it’s important to have “dreams” in life – no matter how silly and out of reach they might seem – because things do and will happen if you keep trying.

Oh, and I’ve learnt that if you’re not sure, it’s  always better to use a cold-machine wash. Just to be safe.

How were you feeling last year at this time compared to now. Where were you at in your life? And where are you now?

Just arrived home from a 9 day trip to Bangkok and Sydney (for work). Met at the airport by my man who proposed later that evening.

Fast forward to this year, just arrived home from Vienna (for work), where my best friend (whom I havn't seen in ages!) told me she was pregnant and I told her I was divorced.

Looking forward to see where I'll be same time next year *sigh*

It is encourging to hear of another short marriage. I was married March-August 2010 after living togther for a year, and after 8 months of engagement before that. My parents actually had a breakup from the same day as me. I took half a year in 2010 to accept single life. I only completed 1 uni subject in that time because I was hysterically depressed. The point is this time last year in 2011 I was trying to pass uni, not go broke, and was still depressed. Now I enjoy looking after myself (eating enough to avoid passing out again) shopping for clothes, meeting new friends, and finishing studying something I love. We should be positive and never compare ourselves to others.
