Vanessa Hudgens is facing jail time for a crime of passion.

Vanessa Hudgens and her partner in crime, Austin Butler, are in big trouble.

BIG TROUBLE.

The couple spent their Valentine’s Day weekend getting their rocks off in the Arizona desert and spent February 14 in a place called the Coconino National Forest.

They commemorated the trip — and their love — by means as timeless as illegal.

They carved their names into a rock, like so:

Hudgens posted a snap on her Instagram account and was apparently dobbed in by one of her 15.8 million followers.

As it turns out there’s a federal law against “damaging natural surfaces”.

She’s now facing a criminal investigation and potentially six months in prison (or, more likely, a $US5000 fine).

Orange Is The New Black: Live, anyone?

Here she is celebrating reaching 7 million followers. Wonder if any of them ratted her out?

Seriously this is a law? Wow! Who knew! Not that I've ever done anything like that but I'm stunned, I doubt many people would know that's against the law.

Also I can't believe the comments here, surely we can have a bit of sympathy for someone who probably had no idea they were breaking a law.

Of course it is only a problem that the girl is facing jail time (horror), despite it being both and man and woman arrested. #stoptheempathygap
