First they came for The Craft. Then they announced they were doing it to Jumanji.
Now those mean old Hollywood bigwigs are remaking our favourite-ever romantic drama, The Notebook. And worse still, they’re making it into a TV SHOW.
(Hear that clattering noise? It’s the sound of our hearts hitting the floor as we imagine the epic love story being acted out by anyone other than these two.)
EW reports that US television network CW is developing a television version of the 2004 film, working alongside the writer of the original book, Nicholas Sparks.
“This series will follow the romantic journey of the two beloved central characters Noah and Allie, at the outset of their blossoming relationship as they build their lives and their future together against the backdrop of the racial politics, economic inequities, and social mores of post-World War II of the late 1940s in North Carolina,” the official logline claims.
It all sounds completely unnecessary to us, and it can only mean one thing: an awful struggle for the casting directors.
We can only imagine their panic feverishly think of who could ever replace the perfection that was Rachel McAdam’s portrayal of Allie, and Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Noah.
If we had to cast the roles — and we’re not happy at the prospect, to he honest — here are our top picks for the role of Allie Hamilton:

We almost came around when we thought of Kit Harington and Jennifer Lawrence starring opposite each other.
Almost, until we remembered nobody will ever make as cute an on-screen couple as these two.
The remake madness has gone TOO FAR, Hollywood.

I haven't seen the Notebook (I had paint to watch drying - sorry, but this move comes a close second to Beaches as biggest chick flick of all time) but all these remakes are killing sacred cows for me. And in some case, grinding them up in to hamburger patties. Take the Ghostbusters remake - all girl cast? Not going to work for me; it's not that I'm against chick power, but it just WILL NOT be anywhere near the same. I won't get that sweet rush of nostalgia, generated by a cherished childhood movie being re-injected in to my life.
I was devo'ed when Starbuck swapped genders on the new Battlestar Galactica. It did not feel right at all to be thinking of shagging him rather than pretending to be him on the playground. If I had a therapist, they could have significantly upgraded their Chrissie holiday destination, just on the back of my business alone.
To illustrate, imagine the Notebook being re-made around a gay couple. Absolutely nothing wrong with that (Tony), but it will not be anywhere near the same, nor hold the same resonance for those enraptured by it the first time around.
It's like eating home brand cereal that is desperately trying to masquerade as Nutri-Grain.
I agree with all your points bar one...OMG, how can you not like Beaches?! It's the most schmaltzy, amazing, tear-jerking movie ever! Hahah, terribly chick-flick-y, but so great. Watch it on a hormonal day with a bag of Doritos, and i promise you'll change your mind :-)

I don't really do hormonal - but I tell you what, if we lose the Bledisloe on Sat night, it might be time to give Beaches a crack.
Properly LOL'ing at my desk - i'm imagining a big hairy man sitting on the couch with a bag of nacho cheese doritos, sniffling into a lace-edged hanky whilst watching the Wallabies taking a beating. Nice way to start my Friday, cheers for the laugh!
