Meet the smartest panda on the planet.
If you always seem to get the least amount of food when it comes to meals, here’s a clever way to get a little bit extra. And the best part about it? A panda came up with it.
Fake a pregnancy.
A panda named Ai Hin from the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre in southwestern China did exactly that to get extra food and air conditioning.
The 6-year-old panda was thought to be expecting when zookeepers noticed she was eating less, was less mobile and had a surge in hormones.
The research centre often places pregnant pandas in air-continued suites and gives them 24-hour care.
“They also receive more buns, fruits and bamboo, so some clever pandas have used this to their advantage to improve their quality of life,” said Wu Kongju, an expert at the centre.
Ai Hin, you sneaky bear, you.
When Ai Hin’s behaviour and hormones returned to normal, the zoo-keepers concluded she had experienced a “phantom pregnancy,” which can be common among females of an endangered species.
