Netflix has announced its biggest profile update yet, here’s how it all works.

There’s been a little bit of a shift in Netflix land.

If you have more than one person using your Netflix account (as in, the person paying the bill and then the one or two leeches who use it for free) you’re about to see a change in the way profiles are used on the service.

It’s an anniversary Netflix doesn’t really expect you to remember, but five years ago they launched profiles and from that moment on your Netflix viewing preferences became uniquely yours, personalised to you and your taste even if you were on a shared account.

In a nutshell, you no longer had to see your roommate’s movie suggestions in your Top Picks or your little sister’s cartoons in your ‘continue watching options’ (although you could still go and spy on them if you wanted to).

Your profile features contain the best suggestions based on what you watch and today Netflix have announced the next stag of profiles.

The profile icons you’ve used these past five years have had a makeover and you now have access to a whole bunch of new icons, including some of the most beloved characters from Netflix shows and movies.

Profiles are pretty much the key to creating a highly personalised Netflix experience for yourself and if you don’t have one yet we highly suggest you make one quick smart. It just makes finding the right shows and movies for you that little bit easier.

Then you can personalise your profile with an icon like Luke Cage, Crazy Eyes or another one of your favourite characters from a Netflix show.

Here’s a handy cheat sheet to help you work out which profile will work best for you.

If you are power hungry and require full control of the remote, then perhaps you are a Claire Underwood from House of Cards. However, if you think that one day you will have mind control power to change the channel without getting up you are definitely an Eleven from Stranger Things.

Having your own active profile will also mean that once all the new August released original Netflix movies start rolling in, the service will be able to recommend which new releases are right for you, and not all of your family and friends also using the account.

New original Netflix movies for August include Brij Mohan Amar Rahe, Like Father, Perdida, The Package, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, The Motive, The After Party and
The Laws of Thermodynamics.

Classic films dropping on Netflix in August include The Departed, Pride and Prejudice, The Bodyguard and My Sister's Keeper with new episodes also airing for favourites like Great News, Bates Motel, Happy Valley and Animal Kingdom.

Happy watching.
