baby

The most popular girl's name in Australia has been revealed.

I don’t know what it is about baby names.

The good, the bad and the downright strange (calling all Apples…), there’s nothing that divides a friendship group or relationship more than an aggressive difference in opinion about what constitutes a good birth name.

We cannot, however, argue with the stats.

And the stats are in, and the number one girl’s name in Australia has been announced:

It’s Baby.

I’m kidding. It’s Charlotte.

We’ve given you the best names, but what about the worst of 2016? Post continues after video.

A new report into the country’s most popular baby names has found that the Royals do have more influence and control over us than we’d care to admit, with the popularity of the name skyrocketing following the birth of Princess Charlotte last year.

Poor Olivia was knocked off the top spot that she held for the last three consecutive years, edged out by her royal highness Charlotte.

As for boys names, the analysis of national Births, Deaths and Marriages data during 2015 by social research firm McCrindle saw Oliver remaining a solid favourite for new parents, holding the top spot for the second year in a row.

According to Daily Telegraph, report author Mark McCrindle said there's no doubt the royal babies are having a significant effect on our our choice of baby names.

“I think the Royals are the ultimate celebrities and have an impact across the generations," he said.

"Look at George — the name has risen up the ranks since Prince George was born, rising from a rank of 71 in 2012 to 36 — the highest ranking since the 1950s.

“They are classy celebrities and go for names of substance and that’s the trend at the moment.”

McCrindle also noted that parents are reverting back to more traditional spelling of names, rejecting the more creative spellings of certain names.

I liked the name Charlotte when my daughter was born 11 years ago, but my husband said she would be called Charlotte the harlot, so we went with another name instead :0

Same here, but it was my mum who said it! The fact that word 'harlot' is right in the middle of the name doesn't help with that association.

I've taught so many Charlottes and I've never heard a single one called Charlotte the Harlot! I hear it mentioned as a possible drawback a lot but honestly, I don't even think most kids know what a harlot is.

I'm the opposite. I would deliberately avoid a royal name as you can bet your life it's going to be used by every second person.
