Lisa Wilkinson feared for her son's safety after hearing of the Berlin market attack.

Today Show host Lisa Wilkinson has revealed she spent her morning frantically trying to contact her son after hearing of a potential terror attack in Berlin.

Speaking on the show, Lisa said her 21-year-old son has been travelling in the German capital, and even had plans to visit a Christmas market.

“It’s the not knowing, I couldn’t get him on the phone, I couldn’t get any information at all,” she said.

“Pete was trying him as well at home, and his brother and sister were trying.”

Finally, Lisa heard from her son and discovered he was safe.

"He wasn't anywhere near it. He was going to go to the night markets last night, but decided against it and had a sleep instead," she said.

At least 12 people have been killed after a large truck drove through a crowded Christmas market in Germany's capital.

Around 50 people have also been injured in the incident, which police suspect may be terror related.

German police say a man suspected to be the driver of the black Scania truck with Polish licence plates has been arrested near the scene. It is also being reported that a passenger in the truck has died at the scene.

Many are comparing the horrific scenes to that of the Nice terror attack, with tourists telling press it seemed like a "deliberate" act.

Lisa said her son told her what is happening in the city in the hours since the attack.

"Everybody's been told to keep off the streets in Berlin, but he is safe and well, fortunately," she said.

"My heart goes out to all of those many, many families that are going to be affected by this."
