Viewers threaten to #BreakUpWithToday following Lisa Wilkinson's 'scripted' farewell.

In case you missed it, the Today Show doesn’t look like the Today Show anymore.

On Tuesday morning, Australia awoke to an unfamiliar sight on the Channel Nine breakfast show following the shock departure of veteran journalist, Lisa Wilkinson over a rumoured pay dispute with the network. Effective immediately.

Rather than give the the show’s former co-host of ten years one last morning behind the desk to say goodbye, audiences were instead left with a compile of the 57-year-old’s best on-screen moments and farewells from co-host, Karl Stefanovic; newsreader, Sylvia Jeffreys as well as other hosts; Richard Wilkins, sports reporter; Tim Gilbert, and Wilkinson’s fill-in, Deborah Knight.

And viewers were not happy about it, quickly pointing out the strange, even scripted nature of the host’s disappearance from their screens – particularly in reference to Stefanovic’s comments Wilkinson left “for whatever reason”.

“For whatever reason she won’t be doing that anymore” ? Who was the idiot that decided to include that on the teleprompter???? (sic),” one viewer wrote, while others expressed how they’ll be ‘breaking up with Today’ in favour of rival breakfast shows, Studio 10 or ABC’s News Breakfast.

On Monday night, Wilkinson announced via Twitter she was leaving Nine's Today breakfast show for a position at Network Ten because her contract was "unable to meet the expectations".

The breakdown in negotiations reportedly came after Nine refused to pay her the same as Stefanovic. And it's since been announced Wilkinson is joining Ten's evening news program The Project.

Lisa is set to begin her new role with Channel 10 from January 2018.
