Rapper Kanye West has been seen in public for the first time since being hospitalised in a psychiatric facility on November 21, but all anybody wants to talk about is his hair.
The now-blonde 39-year-old attended an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles on Thursday night, and promptly sent social media into a spin.
The image of the father-of-two seated on a wooden chair was originally posted to Instagram by Italian artist Giovanni Bassan, and has been widely shared by relieved fans.
It remains unclear what caused West’s 10-day stay at UCLA Medical Centre, nor has the abrupt cancellation of his US tour. Now at home, it is reported that West is receiving daily visits from his doctor.
Despite the health crisis, filming of the family’s reality TV series Keeping Up With the Kardashians is continuing, an E! network representative told the Sydney Morning Herald. West’s health is going to be discussed more in-depth on the show, the network said.
West, the recipient of 21 Grammy awards, is notoriously private about his life, and appears infrequently on the family’s hit show.
His wife, Kim Kardashian West, has discussed the disparity between her openness and West’s seclusion. In 2013, she told Fabulous Magazine “[I have prepared] myself for respecting the privacy of my child and Kanye. We live different lives, but I love being open. That’s who I’ve always been. That will never change because that is who I am.”

Kanye manages a diagnosed mental illness - which they have not made public. And chose to moderate his meds without consultation with his medical team. This lead to a significant change in his choices and behaviours. The sleep deprivation and paranoia has been part of that. All of this is what has been reported and confirmed in the media. To suggest what mental illness he has, would be speculation. The rest has been confirmed.
For me personally, this has produced compassion and empathy for a personality I have previously found immensely unlikeable based on what comes out of his mouth. I guess appreciating he is managing a mental illness does provide more context to his often jaw dropping mouth pieces.
