I don't remember the original advice being 'swim sideways and panic'. Staying calm has always been the idea.
'And at most beaches, this isn’t too far from shore at all' - And at the beaches where it is far from shore? Stay calm and drown?

..........or any of the 10,864 beaches across Australia. Not forgetting the other tip too.... just to relax, go with it & let it pull you out & around and all whilst your just relaxing and putting one arm up for lifesavers to see. If your at an unpatrolled beach and it looks choppy and dangerous don't go in any further than your knees or thighs. Or go to a patrolled area. I grew up on Currumbin beach and were in the nipperettes (not sure what they call them now, maybe just Nippers) and remember everything they taught us.
