How to change a three pin plug

Part of our DIY How To series, this step-by-step guide takes you through the process of changing a three pin plug, including tools needed and a top tip from DIY expert Tommy Walsh.

Tools

Terminal Screwdriver, Pliers/Wire Strippers (if needed)

Materials

3 Pin Plug

Step one...

Release the centre screw to open up the plug...

Step two...

Turn the plug over and release the three screws on the terminals that hold the cables in place. Carefully pull the cables out of the terminals and discard the old plug.

Step three...

Open the new plug up by releasing the centre screw and if your new plug has a cord grip, this can be removed as well.

Step four...

Release the screws on the three terminal connections. Take your appliance’s cable and check for any damage to the sleeving.

Step five...

Loosen the terminal screws and push the pins through the plug a little.

You can wire the three terminals in any order but if you haven’t rewired a plug before you may find it easier to start with the neutral, then wire the earth and finally th

Step seven...

Lay the wires neatly inside the plug and make sure they are not pinching or damaged before replacing the fuse cartridge.

Step eight

Double check the terminal screws, before replacing the plug cover back on and tightening the centre screw.

To strip a cable...

Taking a pair of pliers or wire strippers, shear the cable off to leave a clean cut, removing the damaged section.
