James Packer has broken off his engagement to Mariah Carey.

The romance that had us fascinated has come to an end. In news sure to make us all feel that love really is dead, the pop star and the billionaire are no more.

No more “whose Gulfstream shall we fly today darling?”. No more his and her yachts.

No more gossip rag stories of Mariah and James grinding away the dancefloor of a nightclub in Capri.

No more Mariah Carey and James Packer.

Will reading gossip sites ever be the same?

Perhaps she wasn't using her discount docket at the petrol pump. Perhaps she bought Braeburns rather than Granny Smiths at Woolies. Perhaps the  supposed $100,000 she spends a month on flowers was the tipping point.

But whatever it was it seems that love is dead.

Woman’s Day has quoted a “close family friend” of Mr Packer who confirmed the split after alleging they fell out over her lavish spending and upcoming reality TV show, Mariah’s World.

"It’s all over,” the insider said.

But generously, the $7.2 billion head of Crown allowed his $669 million former fiancé to keep the $10 million diamond engagement ring he gave her in January.

“James had huge reservations about Mariah’s new reality TV show and the fact that she was willing to expose their lives to the world,” the source said.

TMZ also confirmed the split writing that the “deal breaker” for Packer “came when she had some sort of rendezvous with one of the dancers in her Vegas show”, adding that it was “on video for the reality show.”

But it was a photo posted on the weekend that got tongues wagging.

Mariah Carey posted a sweet family photo of her and her ex husband Nick Cannon at Mariah's Halloween party but the big fella, James Packer was a no-show.

According to other “sources” it was because Halloween parties were not his thing, but TMZ wonders if perhaps it was Mariah Carey that wasn’t Packer’s “thing” anymore.

Woman’s Day reporting earlier this year that they “fell head over heels in love with one another” after meeting after one of her Las Vegas shows. James, you see, had long been a fan of Mariah’s music and often played it in his Bentley when popping out for a Sunday drive.

"They have a connection that is unparalleled; it's been a very beautiful experience for them both. If you spend even five minutes with them, you can't help but believe in true love,"  a close friend said.

Well, at least they had their five minutes.
