Ghosts. Are you a believer?

Regardless whether you believe in ghosts or not, you probably know someone who knows someone who has a story involving ghosts or something freaky that can’t be explained.

Haunted houses, squeaky floorboards, noises in the middle of the night or green lights in the sky. Just like the Lemon Tree Passage ghost, who apparently died in a motocycle accident three years ago. Port Stephens residents believe if they go over 180km per hour the ghost appears in the form of a bright light.

According to The Daily Telegraph, “a handful of videos have been posted on YouTube, allegedly showing a ghostly bright light appearing in the rear windscreen of cars that start driving at dangerous speeds.”

Sound a little nuts to you? Well, not so for the people of Port Stephens who are convinced they’ve seen the ghost. The local police have had to issue a speed warning, “we want speeding drivers to know that the only bright light they’ll be seeing in their rear windows will be the red and blue lights of a police car,” the police spokeswoman said.

Have you ever experienced what you believed was ghost or something that has scared the pants off you?

My childhood home was haunted. It was in an area of Victoria that had seen many shipwrecks and my mum was visited by these lost souls in this house. They would appear in the bedroom and she would just tell them to go away - she felt sorry for them.

My sister's house in suburban Sydney was also haunted - it was so bad she called in a spirit clearer to get rid of the ghosts. The clearer said ghosts gravitate toward homes that are dark and in gullies - and yep, that's where her house is. They also said ghosts can come into the house in old furniture like antiques and then take up residence. My sister used to find lights going on, the CD player starting up without being touched and often, out of the corner of her eye, she could see shapes and things that darted from view. A lot of her personal papers and things were moved or went missing as well. This house was in Sydney's suburbs - not a gothic mansion with dormer windows but a plain old weatherboard home you wouldn't look twice at!

I know this sounds like a load of bollocks but I believe in ghosts. Her house is far more pleasant now that the visitors have left for another place!

My parents were living in a rented house while they were looking for a new place, and I went to stay with them for a few days. My mum was out the first night, so I said goodnight to Dad, then went to get ready for bed, shutting the old wooden bedroom door behind me. As I was getting into bed I realised I hadn't brushed my teeth, so I hopped up again and headed for the bathroom - only to realise that the door was bolted shut from the inside. I knew I hadn't done it - I would never lock myself in a room in a strange house. I was slightly petrified, but my dad, who is a very down to earth guy, just told me I was tired and to go to bed.

That night (door very firmly propped open) I awoke to feel someone sitting on the end of my bed. It was pitch black, so I called out "mum?" - no reply. Then I realised the person was older and smaller than mum (I couldn't see anyone, it was too dark). I burrowed under the covers and said the lord's prayer under my breath until it disappeared! Sounds mental, but i was petrified, and reverted to childhood.

The next day I spoke to mum about the whole thing and she said "Oh I wondered if I should have put you in the other room". Apparently she had been visited by at least 5 or 6 people in that house, and most of them while she was in that room - she'd had to shift the study out of it because papers kept blowing off her desk, even with the windows shut!
