People are bringing dildos to a Texas University to protest gun laws.

#cocksnotglocks.

The U.S aren’t exactly known for their wonderful gun laws.

Despite 300 mass shootings this year alone, many people in the have demanded laws change to allow more people to be able to carry arms across the country.

This was the case for the University of Texas, who have recently passed a “campus carry” law that allows licensed gun holders to carry a concealed handgun on campus.

Understandably, many aren’t pleased with this decision.

In order to highlight the ridiculousness of the rule, one student has set up a Facebook page encouraging others to carry dildos around campus as a sign of protest.

The reason? Dildos are banned from the university.

Jessica Jin has set up a Facebook event called the Campus (DILDO) carry and she’s gaining more and more followers by the day.

The event reads:

“The State of Texas has decided that it is not at all obnoxious to allow deadly concealed weapons in classrooms, however it DOES have strict rules about free sexual expression, to protect your innocence. You would receive a citation for taking a DILDO to class before you would get in trouble for taking a gun to class. Heaven forbid the penis.

Starting on the first day of Long Session classes on August 24, 2016, we are strapping gigantic swinging dildos to our backpacks in protest of campus carry.

ANYBODY can participate in solidarity: alum, non-UT students, people outside of Texas. Come one dildo, come all dildos.

“You’re carrying a gun to class? Yeah well I’m carrying a HUGE DILDO.”

Just about as effective at protecting us from sociopathic shooters, but much safer for recreational play.

#CocksNotGlocks”

(For those who aren’t gun experts/don’t live in the U.S, a glock is a type of handgun).

The event currently has over 2,900 people attending, and is set to take place on the 24th of August.

The University of Texas isn’t unfamiliar to gun violence.

In 1966, Charles Whitman situated himself on the University’s tower and opened fire on those around him, killing 14 people, as well as his mother and wife at home.

The shooting was the largest of its kind until the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.

According The Guardian, at least one of the professors has left the University as a result of the relaxation in gun control.

Economics professor emeritus Daniel Hamermesh had been at the university since 1993 before handing in his letter of resignation.

The Daily Texas Online reported this letter read, “With a huge group of students, my perception is that the risk that a disgruntled student might bring a gun into the classroom and start shooting at me has been substantially enhanced by the concealed-carry law.”

He has since made the decision to work at the University of Sydney where “this risk seems lower”.

Although many have applauded Jin’s event, there are many who have voiced anger over the protest.

No matter the reception, the event has already received an enormous amount of international attention, and this is sure to continue turning heads when it takes place next Friday.

There is not a direct correlation from guns to gun deaths. While USA is towards the top in both gun ownership (1st) and gun deaths (13th), other countries seem to be able to have lots of guns and relatively few gun related deaths. For example Sweden is no. 9 in gun ownership and no. 45 in gun related deaths. (Those stats are from Wikipedia, they were backed up by studies but I didn't examine the studies closely)
It seems to be a cultural thing rather than a gun thing, though as an obvious first step removing a bunch of the guns would be awesome!

That doesnt take into account type of gun. Almost all guns(apart from le/military) in Australia are not self loading guns. They are bolt actions and single/double shot shotguns. With a glock or Ar15 you can quickly discharge 30 rounds. How many mass shootings are with bolt-action rifles?. Not many mass murders would be that stupid.
