CTP is all the same, right? Um, no. This is why.

Compulsory Third Party insurance must be the ultimate ‘grudge purchase.

It costs hundreds of dollars and there seems to be nothing to show for it.

No one wants to look at the paperwork, you can’t wear it to a party, and it’s pretty much the same as everyone else’s.

Just as an FYI, this is an advertorial for Suncorp Insurance.

It’s not like you even have a choice as to whether you buy CTP insurance or not. If you register a car, you have to have it.

It might not feel like it, but it’s a very good thing CTP is part of our motoring landscape. It’s the unselfish insurance – the one that protects us all from dumb things drivers can do.

So the question is, does it really matter which company you choose as your CTP insurer?

The answer is yes, actually it does.

Sure the cost of CTP is the much of a muchness across the board, and the level of basic coverage is the same; but some companies offer additional cover that can make a big difference to you and your family.

That additional coverage is worth considering – and comparing.

Suncorp CTP Insurance, for example, offers Driver Protection Cover for those people with a standard car, station wagon or ute and who are 25 years or older. $1,000,000 if you’re the driver at fault and $2,000,000 if you’re the driver at fault and comprehensively insured with Suncorp Insurance.

This means if you’re in the horrible position of causing an accident and another person is injured or even dies, not only are they or their family compensated, you as the driver at fault will be entitled to claim.

It’s the kind of thing no one likes to think about, but having that kind of coverage can make a bad situation infinitely more bearable.

And it’s the small print you need to read. Although a number of CTP insurers offer Driver Protection, the benefit can be a fraction of the Suncorp CTP Insurance benefit.

That can be the difference between just getting by and having a life.

So when it’s time to tick the box on your CTP Insurance, take a few minutes rather than a couple of seconds.

That seemingly little choice could a big difference to you and your family.

Suncorp CTP Insurance is dedicated to protecting your loved ones by providing compensation to other people injured in an accident, where you’re the at-fault driver. To find out more, visit suncorp.com.au/familyctp

Just a bit more money an insurance company can squeeze out of you and then give you nothing at the end of the day. There needs to be an overhaul of the system. 2 years ago I had a not at fault accident. I have chronic neck, back and shoulder injuries. However, even though there is proof in pathology, the insurance company has withheld medical treatment eg/ Multi Neck, and Thoracic fusion. We are now close to going to court. They say there is nothing wrong with you and your faking it. No different to work cover. So save your money, as private doctors wont help you, as they dont want the hassles of going to court to defend your injuries, and if there forced too, they will only pick one of multiple injuries and then say the rest were excisting. Yeah yeah I know you think well why not find another doctor I DID and the same thing!! Pick an injury as insurance dont fix it all. So specialist become your judge executioner even though the insurance dont pay them YOU do!! Then you go to a solicitor to help you. Another wrong strike, they dont care about getting you better, your worth nothing to them better. Take my advice and go public, cos you wont get fixed anyway.

I wonder if I'll end up being the only commenter here, but anyway. I think the Qld system is silly. CTP should be the same provider across the board. Through work and in my personal life I have met people that have been in major car accidents and third party compensation or lack of has made a major difference in their lives. What I've learned (and nagged my family about) is to make sure your licence is current, you're driving a registered/registerable and roadworthy car/vehicle, you don't drive under the influence and you weren't breaking road rules. If any of these don't apply to you at the time of your accident, you will not be compensated if you need it, regardless of the CTP you have picked.

Actually none of that applies in Victoria - it's the only state to have a no fault scheme, so it doesn't matter whether you are at fault for speeding or dangerous driving or being under the influence, *anyone* involved in a transport accident is covered for at least medical treatment.

Of course anyone, no matter what state is covered for medical treatment, but not compensation. I looked after someone who had an accident with a truck on a dirt bike and was permanently severely neurologically damaged. He received no compensation to help for the rest of his life. On the contrary a friend lost a leg after a taxi drove into him on his motorbike. He received a large enough sum to buy a wheelchair, car and home. Both of these in Victoria.
