Nine celebrities preach the joys of masturbation.

Female masturbation might just be one of the last taboos for modern sexuality.

In fact, many choose to view female masturbation as something similar to fairies, or fat-free chocolate: just a wonderful figment of our imagination that doesn’t really exist.

Well, it does, and recent years have seen a major swing towards normalising and encouraging women to become familiar with their own bodies.

Here’s what some of your favourite celebrities have to say about it.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria was quoted as saying she never enjoyed sex properly until she discovered vibrators and masturbation.

"You get better at sex when you know your own body. How are you going to expect a man to know your body when you don't know what pleases you? It's really important to have a healthy sexuality and to be open about it. It's not a taboo. It's normal."

Amy Schumer

Comedian Amy Schumer tackled female masturbation at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, when she riffed:
"Magic Mike XXL. It like, really is magic. Any time I watch those guys, at least two of my fingers disappear."

Miley Cyrus

Miley has never shied away from the topic of sexuality, but really made a statement when she posted a photo of herself with her hand down her shorts on Instagram, along with the caption: "A masturbate a day keeps the haters away."

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley spoke to Net-A-Porter about her thoughts on masturbation.

“As a young woman you don’t learn how to pleasure yourself, you don’t learn what an orgasm should be, you don’t learn that you should have feelings of satisfaction,” she said.

“I’ve always had a dream of making a book called ‘There’s No Right Way to Masturbate.’”

Alicia Silverstone

A few years ago now, earth mama Alicia Silverstone endorsed The Leaf, an environmentally-friendly vibrator made from environmentally-friendly and non-toxic plastics. On one website, Silverstone wrote “I like that they look natural and feminine..like leaves and flowers…not scary.”

Halle Berry

Halle Berry is all about self pleasure, whether you're with a partner or not. “You can’t forget your sexuality — that’s not good. You can still embrace your body by going to the gym or going to the Pleasure Chest.” Pleasure Chest, of course, being the famous L.A. sex shop!

Emma Watson

Proud feminist Emma Watson spoke with Gloria Steinem and openly promoted OMGYes, a website that sells videos based on research around female masturbation.
"A friend told me about this website called OMGYes, which is dedicated to female sexuality. I wish it had been around longer. Definitely check it out."

Lena Dunham

Who could forget in Lena's book, Not That Kind Of Girl, she recalled that she: "...learned to masturbate the summer after third grade."

Jenny McCarthy

Before she met her husband Donnie Walberg, Jenny committed herself to a year of self love.

"I've been searching for the one—as you know, you were even helping me last time I was here trying to figure out people—so I went on a year of not dating, not f*cking, doing nothing except being by myself. Basically I wanted a year of… I was just by myself."

To clarify - too much information referred to telling the whole world personal private habits and the word Yuk referred to that.
I was interested to see which 'celebrities' felt it necessary to inform all and sundry, and I only recognized one name, I'm pleased to say, and that was Halle Berry. The insignificance of the others can be explained by their desperate claim for attention.

Too much information!! Yuk!

Maybe you found the article more titillating that you're willing to admit, Annette, since you:
- Clicked on a title that clearly sets out what the article is about. 'Nine celbrities preach the joys of masturbation' is a title that leaves absolutely nothing unclear as to the contents of the article
- Obviusly read all nine comments from the celebrities
- Thought about it enough to be grossed out about it
- Took the time to comment

Life pro tip for you: if you think reading about masturbation is going into the TMI territory, don't click on articles that are obviously about exactly that!

I masturbate at least once a day. I have my technique down to a very fine art.

Thought i would share as you claim to be freaked out, but still read the article. I sense you actually being really interested in the topic but (as usual) prefer to default to negativity.

I am happy to give you tips to become more comfortable with your own body and sex drive. Masturbation is very healthy, and feels great too! ;)

Fair point Zepgirl but inaccurate. I was interested in the 'let it all hang out, no modesty, no self respect, no mystery, no private thoughts' just blatant self promotion and grandiosity which passes for 'fame' these days; and it was all there, just as I thought it would be.
As I said, Yuk, and titillating? You've got to be kidding.

So you knew exactly what it was going to be, and still read the article?! I retract nothing in my comment above.
