Long car journey coming up? Feeling the terrors already? Here’s your ten-point plan for a safe, happy drive – even with kids on board…

Mapping it out…

Your trusty sat nav might get you there, but showing your child the route on a map can help to make the journey more enjoyable for everyone.

Light and easy

Over-heated children are bound to get cranky, so dress the kids in light layers which can be whipped off or bundled back on as the temperature requires.

The breakfast club…

…is where it’s at before a lengthy journey.

…And you’re off!

Long journeys can be daunting with a baby, and it makes sense to embark on a few shorter trips before braving a mammoth drive.

Stop and play…

When you stop, try to allow enough time for your toddler or older child have a run around before herding them back into the car.

Snack attack

Eek - are you sure about those dripping ice creams?

‘I feel siiiiick….’

Whose heart doesn’t sink when their child utters those three little words?

Few children are designed to sit quietly in a small, enclosed space for hours on end - so it’s hardly surprising that journeys
