When the temperature drops, this is the colour everyone is going to be wearing.

As the southern hemisphere gets ready to brave what we consider to be freezing temps (we're a very dramatic bunch), it's time to look at what will be trending for autumn.

Here's the thing. Australia is always late to the party but at no fault of our own. When the rest of the world is layering up in jumpers, tights and thick coats, we're cracking out our denim shorts and tees.

That's just the reality when 90 per cent of the world's population operates in a different season (that is an actual stat, people. And it's mind-blowing, right?)

But now it's our turn, and luckily, predicting trends is fairly easy — we just look at what's been everywhere in Europe and the US so far this year.

The answer is burgundy. Everyone wore the shade burgundy, or some variation of it, whether it was bright red, a muted auburn or a deep plum.

And we're all for it. Burgundy is the perfect middle ground for those who want to dabble in colour but don't want to go full-on Barbie pink. It's practically neutral at this point, and it makes any outfit look 10 times more expensive than it actually is.

That could be because the hue was spotted on multiple autumn/winter runways, with designers like Bottega Venetta, Khaite and Gucci showcasing the shade in all its glory.

Or maybe it's because fashion it-girls like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner wore it all throughout autumn and winter.

But if the thought of wearing burgundy head-to-toe scares you, then it's a good idea to start slow. Instead of making it the focal point of your look, use it as an accent instead.

Think burgundy heels with an all black outfit, or a wine-coloured scarf paired with a grey coat. Of course, if you need some inspo then we've got you.
