The tide is finally turning. All of a sudden, it's light when we wake up and still bright when we leave work.

There's a smell of jasmine in the air, and my coat in the morning is suddenly feeling way too hot, which can only mean one thing.

Spring is nearly here, which is the best news, but how on earth do we dress right now? When it's too cold to leave the house without an outer layer, but too warm to keep wearing your heavy winter skin?

Enter the ultimate answer to transeasonal dressing: the humble shacket. What is a shacket, you ask? Well, it's a cross between a jacket and a shirt. Thicker than a shirt, slightly thinner than a jacket.

You get just enough warmth to keep the dwindling chill at bay without breaking into hot flushes on your morning commute.

I currently have two shackets in high rotation: one is cream denim and $109 from Petal & Pup, and the other is a bargain find from Kmart in blue denim for $20. Yes, you read that right, $20.

A cream shacket is a wardrobe hero because you can pair it with all kinds of denim shades without any clashing Canadian tuxedo regret.

Plus, as the weather warms up, you can lean into those lighter, breezier tones. The Petal & Pup option comes in sizes XS to XL, and I opted for an S.

Meanwhile, my trusty Kmart shacket features some seriously cool stud details, elevating an outfit instantly without even trying. It comes in sizes 6 to 20, and I opted to stick to my regular size 10; size up if you prefer a more oversized look.

I'm not the only one in the Mamamia office who is a die-hard shacket fan, either. Fashion Editor and style guru Tamara Holland agrees.

"I've shopped shackets high and low, from Kmart and Best & Less to Bassike and Blanca," she said.

"They're some of the most-worn items in my wardrobe because of the simplicity and versatility when it comes to styling. You can wear them buttoned-up to get the look of an oversized shirt, or loose for more of a jacket vibe."

"I love to half-tuck a denim shacket into matching jeans, or layer a textured shacket in cord or cotton over slinky pants. It's an instant outfit: two pieces and you're done, just add accessories." Tamara advised.

"The collar and structure of a shacket adds some polish to everyday looks, and they're a great transeasonal item for spring."

"This season, you can play with wearing them over longline bermuda shorts or a sheer pant for extra fashion cred."

So, if you're ready to jump aboard the shacket train with us, here are the best ones to shop right now.
