The only 11 things you need in your wardrobe for autumn, according to a fashion writer.

I hate summer. There I said it. It's out in the open now, and I can't take it back. Something about always feeling sweaty, not being able to escape the heat, and the way my hair looks when it's humid outside leaves me longing for autumn and winter.

Not to mention, the fashion is just so much better when the temperatures drop. In summer, I'm just trying to survive, but in autumn and winter, I can layer to my heart's content.

Oversized knitwear, blanket scarves and boots become part of the regular rotation and there are a few pieces I swear by in the cooler months — and they'll carry you throughout the season.

Here are the only 11 key pieces you need for autumn and winter.

A cosy turtleneck jumper.

H&M Oversized Turtleneck Sweater, $29.99.

A turtleneck jumper is a necessity during autumn and winter. Yes, many people hate the feeling of fabric touching their neck, and to them I say feel free to skip. But they are such a simple way to keep warm without having to layer a scarf and a thick coat over the top. It helps trap heat without being too bulky, and it also looks stylish. I'm obsessed with this one from H&M for the chic design and affordable price point.

A heavy coat that can be dressed up or down.

MESHKI Carver Suiting Coat, $289.

This is more of a formal coat but I'm obsessed with it. Pair it with either a black knit dress or even a jumper/trouser combo. It can easily be worn to work or after-work drinks, making it a versatile option to invest in and use season after season.

A luxe-feeling scarf.

Ozwear Connection Uggs Cashmere & Wool Scarf, $90.

You can't head into autumn and winter without a scarf, and the fact that this one is cashmere gives it 100 extra points. Yes, cashmere can be quite expensive, however, once you experience the feeling of the silky fabric along your skin, you won't ever want to go back.

A cap that gives 'model-off-duty' vibes.

Polo Ralph Lauren Classic Sport Cap, $99.

There's something very classic about a cap, and Ralph Lauren makes some of my favourite ones (even Taylor Swift is a fan!). The logo is visible but not garish, and it comes in so many colour ways that you can mix and match depending on your outfit. You'll also be thankful you own one for those windy days. It adds the perfect amount of warmth without stepping into beanie territory just yet.

Boots that were made for walkin'.

Atmos&Here Quinn Leather Ankle Boots, $179.99.

Autumn and winter can be wet and dreary, so a pair of leather ankle boots is a must. These ones by Atmos&Here are chic, come with the perfect heel height and will go with pretty much anything.

Sneakers (in burgundy of course).

Adidas Originals Campus 2, $170.

Some days, you just want to be comfortable. Red sneakers are going to be massive in 2024, and the shade burgundy is already set to trend throughout autumn and winter. So, these sneakers are the perfect addition to your wardrobe.

A versatile pair of jeans.

Rolla's Sailor Long Pants, $169.95.

A good pair of jeans will take you a long way, and this pair by Rolla's caught my eye instantly. Imagine pairing them with a chunky knit jumper and a pair of leather boots. You've got yourself an easy but fashion-forward outfit.

A 'throw-on' knitted dress.

M.N.G Pleated Hem Dress, $139.95.

Dresses are essential, regardless of the weather, and that's because they're easy to throw on. You don't have to think about outfit formulas or what goes with what with dresses. This pleated hem dress by M.N.G is simple, yet the potential is huge. Add some chunky jewellery or keep it as is if you want to look more simple.

A versatile cardigan.

Next Rib Cardigan, $59.

I love a good cardigan. In fact, I love it so much that I consider it to be a staple. You can either wear it as intended or drape it over your shoulder for those in-between weather days.

Fleece tights for when you need some extra warmth.

Lululemon Fleece High-Rise Tight, $129.

I know $129 seems a bit steep for leggings, but these are no ordinary leggings. I don't remember the last time I entered autumn and winter without a pair of fleece-lined leggings. They're warm, comfortable and make for a great layering piece.

A smart, well-fitted blazer.

Oxford Willo Wool Rich Blazer, $159.

Structured wool blazers look good on everyone and also give off the vibe that you have your entire life together (even if you don't). It's also a timeless piece that you'll have in your wardrobe for decades.
