From denim maxis to knee-high boots: The 7 things you'll be wearing in autumn.

Before summer was even over, stores began making way for winter stock. Flowy dresses were replaced with knits. Sandals swapped shelf space with boots.

Now it feels like we're not far off having to do the same with our own wardrobes.

In a matter of weeks, for those of us in the Southern states at least, it's going to get cooler outside and we'll no longer be able to leave the house without a jacket. And our friends up North won't be too far behind that.

So which jacket to invest in? Maybe a trench? Bomber? Denim jacket?

And what boots are trending now?

Thanks to the fashion experts and influencers overseas, we've got a pretty good idea what's going to be in our closets this autumn.

From matching sets to shoes, here are seven things we'll be wearing.

Listen to What Are You Wearing?, Mamamia's weekly fashion podcast. Post continues below.

1. Satin sets.

Coming into autumn and winter, brands have grabbed the summer staple - a matching top and shorts set - and made it more weather appropriate.

Now featuring pants and switching out linen for satin, pyjama-style sets won't be going anywhere. This cooler season, you'll notice neutral options, including khaki, alongside colourful sets and geometric patterns.

Just add a warm layer on top when it gets really chilly (may we suggest a cropped leather jacket?)

2. Denim maxi skirts.

Say goodbye to the micro mini and hello to the maxi - yep, we've gone from one extreme to the other when it comes to denim skirts.

Whether you love or loathe them, long denim skirts are probably the number one trending item for the upcoming season.

The complete opposite of the itty-bitty skirt made inescapable by high fashion brand Miu Miu last year, the maxi version is more versatile, more wearable, and (obviously) doesn't show off nearly as much skin.

3. Masculine trench coats.

Trench coats - always popular and forever classic.

But expect to see more of them in 2023. This year, the shape will be oversized, super long (spot a trend?) and masculine-inspired.

There will be plenty of camel options to choose from (the OG trench coat colour), as well as black, navy and green options.

4. Stripes.

Last year was dominated by micro trends - clothes and accessories that were hot one minute and not the next. So it's assuring to see more classics for 2023.

From the runway to retail stores, there are more neutrals coming through in wearable cuts and shapes. And stripes are back to break those basics up.

Striped knitted jumpers, tee and shirts will be everywhere this autumn, in timeless combos like navy and white. You can't go wrong.

5. Cargo pants.

STOP.

Before you keep scrolling and vow never to wear pants that middle-aged men wear while camping, these cargos are cool. Structured. Look great with a white tee.

6. Skinny belts.

Poor belts. They haven't receieved much loved in recent years.

But expect to see them return in a big (well, small) way this winter.

Directly from the runway of Paris Fashion Week, Louis Vuitton's Fall/Winter 2023 Show featured long, thin belts as a key accessory.

They were used to create shape in oversized blazers, dresses and trench coats - all things we'll be wearing soon.

Designers like Saint Laurent, Gucci and Celine are known for their logo buckle belts, but we're also seeing styles from brands without the hefty price tag attached.

7. Knee-high boots.

Ankle boots have had a steady run, but it's time for knee-high boots to have their time in the spotlight (again).

Expect to see all your favourite shoe brands release pairs, including options for women with bigger calfs, which we love to see.

Kitten-heeled boots, cowgirl styles, chunky stompers - take your pick.
