Anne Hathaway apologises for her Oscars dress (but not for the reason you think)

We'd heard that Anne Hathaway's controversial pink Prada Oscar dress was a last-minute pick. But why ditch the dress she'd been planning on wearing for months? Now, thanks to a statement Hathaway issued to People, we know the truth.

"It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans," the best supporting actress winner explained.

"Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last minute decision," she continued, "as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused."

Hmm, sounds like somebody got an angry text from a certain Mr. Valentino Garavani! Has anyone ever issued a public apology for their red-carpet gown before? It seems like a weird move on Hathaway's part; after all, it's not like she doesn't have a "deep and meaningful relationship" with Prada, too. (Ahem.)

Okay, so what's this Valentino gown that she left on the hanger? Turns out it was a nude embroidered silk tulle dress, much more in keeping with the night's princess-y looks. Unfortunately, it was also remarkably similar to the Alexander McQueen dress worn by Hathaway's Les Miserables costar Amanda Seyfried. According to Us Weekly, Hathaway texted Seyfried to find out what she was wearing, panicked when she realized the dress was a lookalike, and went with one of her back-up choices.

It's interesting that Seyfried, who wasn't a nominee, was the one who ended up wearing the look. Not only that, but Jennifer Aniston changed her gown at the last minute from a nude tulle to a bright red strapless (both Valentino). Rumour has it that her team switched the dress because they heard Hathaway was wearing a similar one. Which, of course, she didn't. But Seyfried did. Wow, red carpet politics are confusing!

Diplomatic apology aside, we wonder if Anne actually regrets her dress decision. On the plus side, if she'd gone with the classy Valentino, no one would be talking about her nipples. On the minus side, no one would be talking about her nipples! What does an actress want on the red carpet, if not attention?
