Are humans the only animal where the child decides when it's weaned? All the so called "lower" animals, the mother is in charge.

way to go alanis! however, speaking from own experience, breastfeeding a 17 month old is still very much like breastfeeding a baby. breastfeeding a child over the age of 24 months is very different. when my daughter was 17 months i also thought i would let her self-wean but once she was 2 and a half she became very demanding, did not understand the need for privacy (basically would just try and rip my shirt off) and was doing monkey acrobatics while attached to my boob. so i stopped. she cried a few days and it was heartbreaking but i had enough. just my experience.
