When Aboriginal man Jarred Wall overheard two old ladies speaking rudely about Indigenous Australians, he could have reacted with anger.
“I could have unleashed a tirade of abuse,” Wall said of the incident.
But instead, he decided to take the high road.
Going against every instinct after hearing their “distasteful” remarks, Wall bought the women a cup of tea and left a note on the receipt.
In a Facebook post following the incident, Wall said he hoped his kind gesture would help the misguided ladies to be a "little wiser and think before they speak".
"Hopefully there won't be a next time," he finished, and somehow, we don't think there will be.

Actually I was one of the women in the Zephyr Cafe situated at Preston
Point beside the Swan Yacht Club in East Fremantle, and the other lady
was my elder sister. I am a retired lecturer in Cultural Studies and my
adopted sister Judith, who happens to be one of The Stolen Generation,
is a former solicitor for the Aboriginal Legal Service, based in
Kalgoorlie. We had no idea the pot of tea was intended as a gentle
rebuke. We were discussing the arguments for and against assimilation
and pluralism in the UK prior to the Brexit vote. Then the conversation
moved on to whether or not reverse discrimination was a real phenomenon
or just a racist backlash against diversity. Obama actually did figure
in the conversation, a point on which we happened to disagree. Judy
thought he got the job because of his race. Jarred, I would like you to
know, you perhaps have misheard us, either that, or you consider some
topics should not be discussed in public? That would be a shame. You
certainly misread us. Old, yes, but we were not two racist white women.
And one of us was Aboriginal. Regardless, thanks for the tea.

Eavesdropping has a connotation of trying to listen when it doesn't concern you.
