The early 2000s was a weird time for fashion. Things were very tight, but somehow also baggy. We wore tank tops over flared jeans, flat caps for absolutely no reason at all, and frankly a shocking amount of fuchsia.
If you were around in the heyday of It-girls like Paris and Nicky Hilton, Tara Reid and Jessica Simpson, you’ll remember how one of the most dominant trends of the era was the ultra low-rise waist.

Hip-grazing pants were all the rage, and skirt waistlines got lower and lower until you could literally see the ‘v’ lines above Paris’ crotch. It was a lot.
We thought we'd buried our "hipsters" in clothing donation bins and deep in the recesses of our memories.
But like the heeled thong and the butterfly clip, all trends eventually cycle back into relevance. Thanks, Gen Z!
And at the Oscars yesterday, Emily Ratajkowski resurrected the trend no one asked for, single-handedly destroying all our good work in getting waists higher and more... civil.
Call us prudish but we're just not ready for this...

And while we're at it, we need to have a word with Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid. They've also done their bit in 2020 to make the hipster cut a thing.
Ladies. Kindly remove Paris circa 2002 from your moodboards. We're all for thrifting and recycling looks, but if you could turn your attention back to the '80s where the waists were mercifully more forgiving, that'd be great.
We don't need to see this in Zara.

The pants that Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid are wearing are hardly low-rise. They're not even mid-rise! So as "evidence" of a returning trend, essentially you've just got one picture of Emily Ratajkowski calling attention to herself (how unusual) - that hardly signifies that low-rise cuts are back in style.
I mean, if I had a stomach that flat, I'd be wearing everything hipster! That said, I seem to recall that the problem with the low rise jeans was that the backs were also low rise, which meant that if you had any bum at all, you were displaying an sizeable amount of plumbers crack. It's no coincidence that this is also the era of the "whale tail" visible thong trend.
