Kate Hunters bag1 How many bags does a girl need?

Kate's bag. Her ONLY bag.

Last year I revealed on Twitter that I own just the one bag. It’s dark brown, comfortably holds a decent-sized book and my wallet. There’s a pocket for my phone and another for tampons. It’s made of tough nylon fabric, so is impervious to spilt Diet Coke as well as nuclear fallout.  I don’t give my bag a second thought. But the day I sent that tweet to the world, a lot of other people did. My sisters led the chorus.  Many questioned how I can live with myself, let alone just one bag? Thirty-one of my (presumably) stylish followers clicked ‘unfollow.’ I was a victim of online bagism.

I do, in fact, own several other bags. My husband bought me a rich pink Marc Jacobs satchel two years ago. The bag lovers in my life have asked for it to be left to them when I die. It’s lovely – I carry it when I’m trying to be taken seriously as a writer; so, not often. Also, I live in fear of a Diet Coke flood within its gorgeousness.

handbags many 380x561 How many bags does a girl need?

Does this look like your wardrobe?

I also have a furry Wayne Cooper handbag. Mum bought it for me, concerned I might take the brown bag to the recent Ultimate Girly High Tea and ruin the look of the dress I’d bought specially (I like buying clothes, but bags aren’t on my radar). I enjoyed carrying furry Wayne, but he’s now languishing at the bottom of my wardrobe in his logoed flannelette storage bag, where he’ll stay until one of my sisters borrows him. I can actually think of more uses for the flannelette bag than furry Wayne.

I also have another bag, identical to the brown one, but red and four times the size. If I was a shoplifter (and if the bag wasn’t red) that’s the one I’d take.

So that’s four bags, but only one is on active duty. Some things people notice and some they don’t. I never notice other people’s bags so I’m not bothered about my own. For some people it’s shoes, for others it’s lipsticks. One friend has had the same haircut since she was 15. She’s 47. Is it her signature style or is she in a rut? Is there something in your life that you won’t let go – no matter how many people say you must?

How many bags do you own? And what is inside it/them?

I’m sorry Kate, I love your writing and I’m sure you are otherwise quite a stylish lady, but that one bag that you use is truly awful!
I have a few bags in rotation. I don’t really like brown leather and gave away my Country Road one to my sister a while ago.
I recently bought a silver Cambridge Satchel Company satchel which I adore and surprisingly it goes with everything.
My Dad always told me from a young age you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes (something his Dad told him). Maybe for women it’s bags? I don’t know. Just a thought.

I have quite a few which I can’t really be bothered to count but here are some of my favourites: Alexander McQueen black bag, Marc by Marc Jacobs Faridah orange bag, Michael Michael Kors blue bag, Mimco turnlock in fudge, Mimco Brand New Day bag in coalmine, a few other Mimco bags in black and brown, several Witchery bags including red, dark brown, green, tan, purple, a Rabeanco purple bag, Country Road black hobo. I love handbags and buy a few new ones each year. My aim is to have a bag in every colour, which I have almost achieved.

I received an Alexander Wang handbag in all it’s designer glory for my 21st birthday, and have used it every day since. What’s the point in having designer wares if they languish in your closet, only seeing the light of day once or twice a year? Anyway, you can have bags cleaned for a dime these days. Have no fear.

My other bag is a heavy duty, oversized tote bag by Camelia Carlton that I got online. I use it to lug around my gym gear, mail, children’s toys, sneaky snacks.. you know the drill. I love it! And I got it online: http://cameliacarlton.com.au/cfbbag.htm

The perfect two-bag set up, I say!

I used to buy lots of cheaper handbags (different ones to match different outfits) but found that they disintegrated fast and due to my laziness in swapping bags, I tended to stick with one or two out of the collection irrespective of what I was wearing. So a few years back, whenever I did the annual closet cleanout, I would find that I would be dumping a heap of bags in the Salvos bins.
So decided then that I’d invest in the ‘classics’. Now have 4 LV bags, 1 Gucci, 1 Kate Spade and 1 Bally. And surprise surprise, come closet cleanout time, no handbags in charity bins!

I love bags and shoes, can’t seem to get enough of them. I think they help put an outfit together and say a lot about ones sense of style and elegance.

coming back to MM after a few weeks and finding this post. The ONLY bag — ” I own just the one bag” but you don’t own one bag, you own several, and one more than me: I have three:. So if I said, I own ONE bag, one bag in use, but I actually have 100 in my wardrobe, what does that mean?? to me, it means I can’t count!!! You do not own one bag, you own several and use just the one. Strangely, like 90% of the population.

going back to hibernation; this is just a bit ridiculous.

I have 7 bags in total

    - Soft leather light brown bag from Sportsgirl (casual)
    - Small camel colour bag from Kate hill (doesn’t fit much in but I like it)
    - Cream leather bag, smallish but does the job, also comes with a strap to wear over the shoulder, got this from a shop recently in the US.
    - Small black Guess bag, don’t use this much during the day, sometimes when going out.
    - Small black across the shoulder bag from Sportsgirl, I like to take this out to clubs/bars it’s small but I can convert it to a small clutch as well.
    - Then I have 2 identical bags, one is black and the other is Silver, got these from a small shop in Eltham, in Melbourne years ago, but they still look great and always get compliments on them. They are a good size, not too big not too small.

Anyway I’m not that much into bags, if I see a bag that costs $500 or whatever, I think I’d rather buy myself a new outfit! I’m slightly better with shoes, although I’d have to say my vice is makeup, I love shopping for makeup but can’t justify having 100′s of bags or shoes.

Only ever one bag at a time … but sometimes I have to buy a few to get The One. Needs to be a dark colour to hide spills and pen marks, big enough for a large purse, glasses, book & diary, not so big I can’t find my car keys, pens or work security tag, opens at the top so I can dig around one-handed for my train ticket, not with just a magnetic flap over the top since someone pinched my purse out of one like that on a bus, and – this is the tragedy at the moment – physio has told me I have to get one with a strap long enough to wear cross-wise over my body. WHERE ON EARTH ARE THE ADJUSTABLE STRAP HANDBAGS THIS YEAR. Had a beautiful square Mimco fabric bag which was The One until it fell apart, got another exact one on ebay (success!) but can’t adjust the strap. Strangulation time. Also had a wonderful Oroton-for-blokes satchel that fell apart, but of course can’t get another like it. Am carrying one at the moment that is Kind-of The One – all the required attributes except it’s a deliberately scruffy grey cord unhemmed one (also from Mimco) that looks like I borrowed it from a garden shed. Functional, but ….

The thing that shocks me most about this post is not that you only use one bag, but that 30 people stopped ‘following’ you online because of this fact. Bizzare that someone becomes less interesting because of how many handbags they own / use.

I buy myself a handbag each birthday. Plus a few times in between… as many have said, a handbag and shoes fanatic. I keep about 10 in circulation – each have a separate function (formal work, informal work, play, night, shopping, travelling, carrying computer etc etc). It embarrasses me to consider the excess, but I love the luxury at the same time.

    I have four bags.

A brown Mimco that is my favourite – soft, roomy, comfortable to wear, a black leather backpack that is dying (and ugly), an extremely cute but not very usefully shaped Spencer and Rutherford and a little red vinyl clutch that I have had forever for going out.

I now actually use my son’s mini billabong backpack as my car died and I have become a walker.

I could never get the bag/colour thing going on, nor can I cope with owning too many – two in rotation would be my limit. I mainly wear black and scarlet/purple/red and sometimes brown. I rarely wore the Mimco bag (damn mothers for drumming in that stupid ‘your handbag colour needs a reason’) so deliberately got a few things that would go with it.

Now that I have become a commuter, I really need a bag that will allow me to pick up a bit of shopping, carry a water bottle, shopping bags, umbrella and all the other bits of life, be comfortable to wear and go with pretty much everything.

I don’t often have to show it off, but it would be good if it had a little bit of cred. I find bags (and wallets) to be rather a commitment and spend ages trying to find the one that speaks to me. Shoes are the same. My biggest clothing type collection is yoga pants (gotta love working from home) can never have too many.

Can anyone recommend a bag brand that might do the trick? I am also wondering if I should go for a bright colour instead of black or brown to avoid the ‘matching’ problem.

Love bags! It’s that item that “always fits” when you try them on! I have a great mix of second-hand finds to Australian designers and I love and use them all.

    These are my main faves:

Mimco button bag – an oldie but a goodie. Invested in this bag fresh out of uni and it was a huge splurge. I’d been eyeing it off for months! It is my most commonly used bag.
Mimco black saddle bag – was a gift from colleagues when I changed jobs. Love it but a little too small for everyday use. More of a dinner with the girls kind of bag.
Hobo satchel bought in NYC – so so so pretty. Couldn’t afford to eat for my last week in The Big Apple due to this bag but my goodness was it worth it. Get so many compliments on it.
Allanah Hill polka dot clutch – bought in one of her huge Paddington Hall sales about 6 years ago. Such a pretty little bag and perfect for weddings and other formal occasions
Manzoni large black leather bag with a silver ring handle – this bag is so big and so deep I can never find anything in it – but my word it is beautiful!
Floral and sequinned “nana bag” – antique felt bag bought from Paddington markets almost 10 years ago. I have had to have it fixed at least half a dozen times and now can’t hold it by its handles because otherwise it rips but it is such a exquisite find. Also had a Carrie moment with this one, a found a pair of earrings I had lost 12 months ago in the lining of the bag during one of its visits to the bag doctor…
Oroton Mesh Bag – this little darling was my mum’s and it is my favourite evening bag. It’s a gorgeous nude colour so goes with everything. It’s particularly special as it was mum’s.

I would have a good ten more to tell you all about. Each with a little story making them all the more special to me, but I’d better get back to work!!

Oh, and in terms of what I keep in them… anything and everything!!!

I am with you Mia, I have one bag that I love, it is the perfect size for jut me, Ican find everything in it and everyone asks me where I got it. It is a cream leather shoulder tote from Country Road and I got it four years ago. Until recently it was the only bag I owned for four years, until I took my girls shopping one day with out a pram and realised I was carrying a pastel blue and pink backpack with my girls drinks and emergency food and my wallet, keys and mobile. I went straight to sportsgirl and got an enormous bag that fits over my shoulder, holds all the things my girls could possibly need, including nappy change stuff, plus a special pocket at the front just for me! It is PVC that looks like leather, so perfect for hiding spills, vegemite and yoghurt fingerprints and is a gorgeous brown distessed colour. Sadly my cream leather bag is in retirement, I will have it cleaned and hope someday I will be able to use it again.

I usually by one bag in winter and one in summer. I only ever have one bag in circulation. I cant be bothered transferring all my stuff from one bag to another just for a look…. it’s in important to me. I do like a good leather bag though and hopefully theylast longer than 6 months but usually not. I mistreat them so they can start to look shabby. I have two bags – one I use every day which I bought from Review about a year ago. It’s leather, and it was expensive (for me) but I always get compliments on it. The other one is a grey 80s bag with fringing which I use for going out. I also have a couple of canvas tote bags, and some clutch purses for going out. I’ll be honest, I would love a few more… but I’m on a budget this year as partner is a student.

I generally have one handbag that i use all the time until it wears out. At the moment its a mocca coloured jag bag. Before that it was a pink Burberry (omg how i LOOOOOOOOOOVED that bag – i still have it but it isnt really usable). i also have a bunch of clutches that i take when i (occaisionally) go out at night.

I expect my current bag is going to last a long time due to the fact that now i hardly go out without the bub so i pretty much just chuck all my stuff in the nappy bag so i dont have to juggle too much stuff.

Hi everyone. I have a question I would love answered. How long should a good bag last for if you are using it nearly everyday? By ‘good’ I mean about $200-$300 bucks.

I would love to hear some answers, because I only just invested in a ‘good’ bag for the first time in my life and I really hope it lasts longer than a year or two. Thanks all.

I am a shoe fanatic. LOVE THEM. Can’t have enough. I was so close to buying this one pair of from Wanted. They were platform stilletos, with a separate elastic bow around the top. They actually hurt my calf so I opted against them, I still have a crush..

I also love bags, but my Mum is the bag queen. Funny, she works in a shoe shop! (I have a few bags, a tiny beaded one ideal for clubbing which is big enough for my ID, money and iPhone.)

I bought my current bag in Las Vegas, it is a gorgeous purple Juicy Couture and I love it so much. It is stuffed with everything you can imagine: lipstick, pads, bobbypins, bandaids, deodorant, earphones, etc. I still can’t get my head around how men travel with only their wallets?

Buy a cheap but sealed container from your local $2 store. You can’t open it until you are ready to spend it, so chuck in every gold coin you have floating in your bag or car, and if you have a spare $5.00 note or a Medicare refund, then put it straight into the tin. I learnt this tip several years ago. Instead of buying a lotto ticket, I put the money into the jar and ‘voila!’ lotto at the end of the year. (It would be at least $500 that would have been wasted otherwise, if you think of it as $10.00 a week)

Ok, I feel comfortable admitting this in this forum….I have over 50 handbags. I am a handbag-a-holic. I play favourites (black Miu Miu, blue Prada, purple Longchamp). I have given specific instructions in my will so that there are no issues between my friends, nieces, sisters etc. I can justify any type of handbag purchase on a cost per wear basis. There is nothing like the smell, feel or admiring looks that a high end handbag will give you. I firmly believe that every women deserves at least one hot handbag in her collection.

I have a few bags but everyday I use a largish black Mimco bag. I like it but will never buy another from there. In no time the zip broke and they charged me $60 to fix it!

Anyhoo… about 6 months ago I bought a little make-up-purse-thing and in that go all the little bits and bobs that go missing in a large bag. Lippy, tampons, panadol, tic tacs, titchy handcream, hair clips for the girls. That way, the only items really in my handbag are: purse, phone, keys and make-up-purse-thingy. (oh and daughter’s EpiPen, mustn’t forget that).

On an outing without children, I have a little grey studded bag and I happily throw in only a coin purse, phone, lippy and keys. I love an outing with my little bag, it doesn’t hurt my shoulder… :-)

A smaller, Longchamp Le Piliage (if that’s how you spell it) bought on eBay for $51. It’s my weekend, cafe-meeting-up bag

    Bag #3
Oroton clutch given as a gift for my birthday. Not sure of the price, but I think it retails for $200. This is my going out bag and I take it out with me EVERY weekend. I love it.

Sometimes I try and go bag shopping because I feel like I should have more bags, but I’m so in love and content with my current bags, I end up empty-handed every time.

I wrote earlier about my addiction to LV; black epi in particular, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Longchamp; I would call it a carry bag. Lots of kids mean lots of books, iphones, ipods, magazines, blah, blah, blah…. When I travel, I travel with a large, formal LV epi with me along with the Longchamp bag that carries EVERYTHING that the family needs! I think that this should be the best bag for a new mother. It does everything that a baby bag needs to do, but takes you through to their teenage years and beyond. And it’s authentic and well wearing. It will also take your husband’s glasses, phone and newspaper wherever you happen to travel! I still want my darling to get a man bag, but it is NEVER going to happen!
As a PS, although a Longchamp bag may seem expensive to begin with, it will last longer then any baby bag ever will, and is far more stylish.

I have a few bags, but I usually buy one, use it for about 6 months until it starts looking less than new, then I buy another one. In the past I’ve been far too lazy to change bags regularly. Along with the amount of things I put in my bag.

However for my birthday this year Oroton had a 70% off sale (well, the sale wasn’t for my birthday, it wasn’t a Tamsin Birthday sale, but you know what I mean).

So both my husband and my mother gave me an Oroton handbag, very different, so one is my ‘every day’ bag and the other one will be ‘special’ bag. So far I’ve managed to swap twice (my birthday was 4th May), maybe I will learn this multiple bag skill!

Well it was only advertised to the Tamsins of the world. Bahahaha. Actually it wasn’t advertised at all – I stopped by Birkinhead point 2 weeks before my birthday and discovered it, only to find it was also online – for something like 5 days they added an “outlet” tab to their website.

When you’re talking $500 for a bag, 70% off is HUGE.

I can’t believe I was married to a nerd for about 6 months before anyone pointed out that to me.

But then my original name (pre-marriage) was Tamsin Claire Veitch and I was 18 before anyone pointed out my name was Tamsin Cleavage.

It sounds like some of you need a bag insert. I have one – its great! Its basically a sack with some pockets that you put all your important stuff in (mine has a purse, phone, mints, umbrella, diary and make up) so when you change bags you just pull it out and put it in another bag – and all of your stuff comes with it! You can get them at bag shops and I think from Howards storage

I have 2 decent sized laptop backpacks for work and until recently that was it. The nicer (& smaller) one got used on the weekends, but even I can tell it’s not exactly suitable for going out.

So a few weeks ago I picked up a lovely dusky pink handbag, in mint condition, from an op shop. It’s really very nice, with lots of handy compartments for mobile etc, but I still feel a bit weird using it!!!

Oh, and I’ve had my wallet for 6 years and it’s absolutely falling apart, which is faintly embarrassing but I haven’t found another one yet that clicks with me.

Shoes on the other hand …. if I let myself spend the money …. and had a better wardrobe …. oh yes, I could have a LOT of shoes ;)

I must admit I love shoes and jewellery more than bags – but love all these 3 because they always fit regardless of how fat or thin I am.

But can count off the top of my head – to owning over 50 handbags and yes I do use them all. Mainly I rotate them. I subconsciously declare a Main Bag de Jour” each seasons for work. But will tailor the one I use in the evening to the event – even to go grocery shopping!

I have solved the 16lipstick dilemma by carrying a small lipstick bag inside my bag making the occassional work morning bag change easier!

And to cement my recent committment to bag changing – I recently bought a very special red patent Chanel that’s to die for – only thing is I wonder if it’s too special for everyday use?

I am bag-obsessed. Let me just run to the bedroom and count how many I have…only 12. Gee – I thought it was more. 6 of them are red. I simply can’t resist a red handbag. Actually now that I think about it that 12 doesn’t include the large red laptop bag up on top of my shelf. I regularly rotate amongst at least 6 of them, depending on what I have to carry, what I’m wearing, or where I’m going.

Not sure why but bags just don’t do it for me, I have one active one and one from a friend I use for lugging bigger things around. Thats it, somehow I’m missing the accessory chromosome too, whereas I am a fashion fiend in all the other areas. Not that I don’t like them, I’m just so ridiculously fussy that it is rare I see a pair of shoes or a bag that I feel are worth buying. Strange, but good on the wallet.

I have one bag, just one. A lovely big one that fits all my things plus a nappy pack and spare change of clothes for my toddler and various snacks. It’s got plenty of pockets and it’s very easy to remove the baby things if i’m going out without the children.
I can’t see a need for more than one bag, it’s just confusing. I’m happy to use one until it breaks and then buy a new one. One bag usually lasts me years :)

    Ohh I so get this.

But it extends to pretty much all of my ‘stylish’… or lack there of… life.
I feel like a chromosome was left off me. The girly one.

I wish we could wear tracksuit pants and sports bras around with man shirts all the time. I am very utilitarian with clothes, bags and shoes. I don’t see why I need more than 1 of anything really. Except of course undies, socks and scarves.

This all goes fine until I need to do something out of the ordinary and I have a mild anxiety attack trying to figure out what to put on.

And for those minutes I always curse myself…. wishing that I spent more and was more fancy…. :-(

The most stylish women in the world look amazing in a white t-shirt and jeans. Add a blazer for when you really want to dress up and that’s all the ‘stylish’ you will ever need. Sounds like an outfit you would be comfortable in, too, and being comfortable and confident is the most attractive thing anyone can wear.

We’re all so different – who cares if you don’t fit a mould. Celebrate you!

I have big plastic tubs. I have an iPhone app where I have a photo of each one and they are matched to different outfits. When I look at outfit ideas each night for the following day, it also gives me a bag idea as well.
The tubs are numbered and each photo on my phone includes the tub number. Takes me about 5 minutes each night to work out my outfit and accessories for the following day.
