It’s been a crazy weekend here at the Mamamia offices.
Why’s this? We’re in the process of officially (and finally)(and softly) launching Mamamia Shopping *insert happy dance here*. The shopping team have done a phenomenal job at putting the site together and our virtual shopping carts are already overflowing with clothes, shoes, jewellery, amazing beauty bargains and bags.
In short: we’ve taken the best of online shopping – all sizes, all budgets all ages – and brought it together in one place. Right HERE.
We’re adding more product – thousands more to come over the next few days – so don’t forget to check back.
We’ll have more to tell you over the next week or so but you can take an early look: here. (And it’s https://www.mamamia.com.au/shop if you’d like to add us to your favourites.)
A Current Affair is coming by the office this morning to film an exclusive story on our launch. The MM staff will be modelling the clothes and it feels a little like a kid’s dress up closet in our offices at the moment – except with MUCH nicer stuff.
Here’s a sneak peak at what we’ll be wearing.

Mamamia Shopping Editor Jasmine, styling up.
Other than clothes, glorious, clothes – this is what we’ve been talking about this morning.
The protests in Sydney: Hundreds of Muslims took to the streets of Sydney on Saturday protesting against the film, Innocence of Muslims, which is a a low budget US movie that mocks the Prophet Mohammed and Islam. Mamamia’s Jamila Rizvi and Lucy Ormonde were (shopping) in Sydney when the protests turned violent. You can read about that here.
Kate Middleton and the topless photos: French and Irish magazines have now printed the intrusive photos of the Duchess of Cambridge – which were taken from a distance of 1.6km away. Kate and William are now launching legal action against the photographer and seeking an injunction, so the prints won’t be published again. More details here.
Over to you, what’s been happening in your world?

I was just wondering what happened to the girl who posted a while ago about having neurosurgery. I was wondering if you knew how her surgery went and if she is recovering well?

Went out for breakfast on Saturday morning, GOT ENGAGED, went ring shopping and found the most beautiful perfect ring, had ice cream with one of my oldest friends, went to work and spent the day running around going “I’m engaged!”, then went out for dinner and to the Hanson concert with my friend & future bridesmaid! You know, pretty much just THE BEST WEEKEND EVER!!!

Congratulations! That’s a weekend to remember.

Hanson AND an engagment?! Lucky girl!!!

Oh and I’m SO excited for MM Shopping (I have an online spending issue haha), but are prices affordable? I looked at the sneak peak of website that was in a link in comments, but the shoes were in the $300s, which is out of my price range for a pair of heels!

What’s happening in my world is nice skin! I’ve always had oily skin prone to breakouts… but I’ve finally found that Cetaphil cleanser, lemon juice on my skin at night, coconut oil as a moisturiser and a weekly bi-carb scrub is what my skin has been needing all these years.
Apparently my skin is a hippy and loves it all natural haha – wish I’d found out soon so I could’ve saved myself some serious cashola!! Better late than never though

Just wondering, is it acceptable for a recruiter to ask if you have any mental health issues in the past? One recruiter made me feel horrible as I didn’t disclose it in the paperwork…
loading...
I really don’t think it’s acceptable, more like discrimination..
loading...
No it is absolutely not legal and in fact you can take them to the Human Rights Commission for breaches of Discrimination legislation

Thank you to the both of you for your advice! At least I know that I wasn’t going crazy by being offended…

So fantastic, love that you have gorgeous plus size!

I really want to find a water jug with an infuser for summer.
I’d ideally like the type with the ‘tube with holes’ that goes down the middle of the jug, but after searching high and low in the shops over the weekend, all I found was jugs with ice tubes down the centre. No infusers anywhere.
Has anyone seen one?

Peter’s of Kensington: http://www.petersofkensington.com.au/Public/Bodum-Ceylon-Ice-Tea-Jug-w-Infuser-15L.aspx
Store is in Kensington NSW or you can order online.
Also, Zero Japan make iced lovely tea jugs and sell infusers for them separately: http://zerojapan.com.au/index.php/ You can locate their stockists by punching in your postcode.

What about something like this and the price is great. http://www.petersofkensington.com.au/Public/Bodum-Ceylon-Ice-Tea-Jug-w-Infuser-15L.aspx

Maxwell and Williams used to make one when I worked at House. I have one and use it heaps! Try any House store, they should tell you if they are still available.

Thank you all for the great suggestions.

MAMAMIA SHOPPING! OMG!
Wowsas! Congrats guys! The site looks awesome SO many great things to buy and free shipping?!!
Had a great weekend! Cooked POSSIBLY the best thing I think I have ever made. And I PROMISE I’m not just saying that! Sticky Cinnamon and Pecan Buns! YUMMMMMMMM!
loading...
They look amazing – better than sex possibly.

I don’t know if Mamamia shopping is ready to accept orders yet but I’m already filling my cart! Too much fabulous stuff and I love how you’ve included things for kids as well. The whole site looks fantastic!
One question though – and please let me know if I should direct this elsewhere instead – for the product “Chilli Kids – Will Brown With Skull Print” the sizes listed start at 22 and up. I’m not sure if that’s a mistake ie my 3yo is in size 8 or if I need to convert that somehow. I looked at the size guide but didn’t see anything there.
Thanks!

I saw Jamila on the Today Show over the weekend. It was nice seeing her ‘in person’ (as opposed to still photos). I have enjoyed her writing and I admire young people like her taking on big jobs (her work in Canberra and now mamamia). I think she’s a great role model. I love her sense of style and I also think she looks SO youthful! Her writing is so mature, I just expected someone more mature looking on the TV screen…
Not sure if all of this came across properly, but I think she’s great!

she is pretty awesome!

Just wondering if Mamamia would consider having a fitness section?
loading...
YES! Would love new ideas for workouts and nutrition etc.
loading...
What a great idea Chachi!
That’s something I’d love to contribute to (writing articles etc) if you do set it up Mamamia

Where oh where can I buy that multi colour bright stripe bag which is in photo 4?? I am in love!

Well I had a long weekend with Friday off, aka HANSON DAY. I went to the airport to stalk them and dammit missed them by minutes because their original plane got delayed and then flight cancelled, and the Virgin and Qantas terminals are too far apart for my short legs to run to in enough time. Yes, I love them.
That being said, the concert was sensational, lots of old and new stuff and everything inbetween, and even my boyf admitted they are good musicians and know how to put on a good show. And for a suprise he hired a limo to drive us around the city afterwards and then home!
But now all the excitement’s worn off I’m pretty sure I’m nursing a chest infection…oh well!
loading...
a chest infection? It is obviously because your heart has been filled with so much love for the Hanson Brothers…
loading...
Hahaha, I like your train of thought, Stace!
loading...
taylor forever!!
loading...
Love that you stalked Hanson, Cassidy. When I was about 12 I waited for their bus outside a shopping centre.

I also saw them last night. They were SO fantastic and it was great to finally see them live! After only ever listening to ‘middle of nowhere’ and then promptly turning grungy and dropping them for Frenzal Rhomb at the age of 14, I thought I would only be interested in hearing tracks from ‘middle of nowhere’. I was surprised how much I enjoyed their new stuff and how the love a 12 yo can have for a band can so promptly bloom back into life at those first few beats of ‘where’s the love’. My fave was Zac (we were the same age and both left handed – clearly we were meant to be together right?) but can’t believe how sexy Isaac has gotten! It was a real dream come true and I loved that the majority of the audience were women aged 25-30 who truly just lost it when they came on stage. We had all waited 15 years for them to stage a concert like this and that wait was so worth it.

Well, after being sick with tonsilitis and an ear infection for most of last week, my three year old has managed to trip over and split her lip right down the middle, as well as graze her nose and chin and forhead. Poor little thing looks so beaten and brusied!!
The funny part was, though, when I told her she wasn’t allowed to kiss anyone at kindy today (in case the lip gets infected etc). She pouted and sighed and said “oh no! That isn’t fair.” She looked so sad about it haha. Makes me wonder what she really gets up to at kindergarten… Hmmm

I love the online shopping site! It’s great

We love it too! Thanks for the lovely feedback Elisha.

I’m very excited because my working week is only 2 days long this week! I’m headed to Hobart on Wednesday and have booked myself two days of leave down there before conference madness starts. Would love any tips Hobart residents or former vistors can offer on their must dos. One of the conference events is at MONA, so I will be getting to go there. I have also booked a ‘Chocolate and Sweets’ tour, which takes you to artisan chocolate and pastry makers. I am tossing up about whether to brave the cold and go up Mt Wellington, and the Cascades Female Factory is also on my maybe list. Unfortutely I am stuck in a workshop all weekend so the Salamanca Markets are out.

I was in Hobart last year for a conference. Great city. I’d recommend Mt. Wellington. I did a bike decent (they took us up on a bus), which was great fun. A little bit scary, but very good. And I’m not even a bike rider, but it was very manageable because it was all down hill. Cascade Brewery is really interesting as you get to see inside the whole factory. Salamanca markets are amazing, best markets I’ve been to in Australia so it’s a pity you’ll be missing out!

I would like to apologise to the furniture sales people who i was grumpy with on the weekend. You were just doing your job (enthusiastically i might add) and i was embroiled in a (rare) standoff with my partner which i took out on you. It was shameful. In fact i will extend the apology to all sales people who had to deal with grumps like me over the weekend.

Quick bit of feedback on MM shopping: can you make it so you can sort by colour? I realise most of the stuff is prints which makes it tricky. Also some of the drop downs menu options are offered twice.
Can’t wait for it all to arrive! Perfect venture for MM.

This is going to sound strange, but I really enjoy cleaning. Mr W and I ended up getting a cleaner once a fortnight at the beginning of the year, because we fought tooooooo much about household cleaning, as in, I wanted him to clean every week and like cleaning as much as I do and he, um, just doesn’t.
So I’ve been in the cleaning mood lately – the other weekend I pulled everything out from under our bed and vacumned and this weekend I cleaned out the entire study. It sounds mad, but I love doing stuff like that. I’m a very homely person and like being at home and doing stuff like that.
In other news, I’m 90% of the way towards applying for a Masters in Information Management. Just need my old academic record certified and uploaded and it’ll be done. I’m a bit nervous – what if I don’t like it, or what’s even worse, what if there are no roles?

Feeling really sad. Started a new job 2 months ago because we needed me to work for financial reasons. But during these 2 months my two year old has been constantly ill and I’ve had so much time off not to mention the one week I had the flu! I know it’s normal for a child to pick up illnesses in they first year of child care, but now I fear I’m going to lose my job. There’s not much more I can do. My husband can’t take time off because his job is relatively new too and he has no leave left and it’s better for me to take the time off financially. I only have some family help but not all the days of the week. So just wanted to share. Thanks.

I’m so sorry Dee. Sending lots of hugs your way. Xx

Oh Dee, I feel your pain. I think I had about 25 days off the year my little girl started kindy. She picked up every cold, cough, conjunctivitis, gastrobug, every bloody thing that went round. It does get better though – she’s in her 3rd year of kindy now and has only been sick once or twice this year. It’s so exhausting though, I hope your work is supportive and she builds up a robust immune system soon xx

I can completely relate! We’ve had the same situation this year with myself starting a new job. Except we have 2 kids where one would be sick one week, the other the next, then me then my husband the next week… we went in circles of getting sick all of winter.
All I can say is that spring is here! Bring on the warmer weather, and no sickness. 4 weeks and no runny noses
loading...
Sorry to hear what you’re going through. Thinking of you, and I am hoping you don’t lose your job! Hope your child is better too! Hopefully with the warmer weather the colds and flus will ease off.

Thanks everyone!

How frustrating
Do you have family or friends that might be able to take care of her occasionally?

Love it! Congratulations on the new shopping site. Can;t wait to it out (not that i need another onine shopping website to peruse, but oh well!!)xx

Thanks Sophie! We’re excited too

I spent most of it sick but I had a rapid recovery in time for my husband to take me to the drive in. We saw Grease which is one of my all time favourite movies.
I’m hoping this will be the week I get a job, so fingers crossed!

I LOVE Grease!!! I have also got my daughter in love with Grease and -so cute- I think she has a crush on the t birds.

After realising I’ve piled on 5kg over winter, I really got stuck into working out an exercise plan over the weekend. Hopefully with the new exercising and paying more attention to what I’m eating I will drop it by Christmas.
With that in mind, we then went to a birthday party, a BBQ and a dinner party on the weekend! But I was really good about portion control and choosing the healthiest option. It wasn’t diet eating but it was better than I usually am – I even resisted the cheese plate.
On the other hand, I made two desserts on the weekend for said social gatherings (but only had a tiny try of each at the parties). I made my grandmother’s european style baked cheesecake (recipe: http://blithemoments.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/omas-baked-cheesecake.html) and a good old retrolicious Spanish cream which I will blog about later in the week.
Here is to managing to lose this extra weight quick smart.

That cheesecake looks AMAZING.

Thanks Jamila. It was super hard to restrict myself to only one small slice.

I went to IKEA on the weekend to buy a new couch and two new armchairs. I checked online to ensure they had stock. But when I got there, one armchair and the couch had sold out that morning before I arrived. Aggravating! They said they’d be in stock today, but it’s a 4 hour round trip for me to get there and I can only go on weekends.
We’d already moved our old ugly couch (held up by a brick!) onto the front verandah (yes, I now have a bogan couch on the verandah) so now we only have three armchairs inside until I can get back to IKEA in early October.
Also, my Dad met me there so he could bring the couch to my house in his ute, so I wasted his time as well! Grrrr!

Two must do / buys for me when at IKEA:
1. the Princess cake from the cafe – yum!
2. the large coloured napkins… I always buy 2-3 packs for $3.99 each. Love ‘em.

Yay for Mamamia shopping!!!
Great accessories on offer

Luckily still the weekend…for 6 more hours! Then back to the grind.
I am about to go make homemade burgers on the charcoal grill…yum! And just found a recipe for apple pie bread, which I probably won’t get to try tonight, maybe tomorrow. It is apple season in the Midwest, and Illinois is known for its apples, so it seems fitting!
My bargain Chuck Taylors arrive tomorrow, and I have bought dye for the dodgy patterned ones, so that will be next weekend’s project.
Looking forward to my second tap class this week – we start our routine for the end of year concert. The pangs of “God, I miss this!” when we were dancing last week were very apparent! I hope I can find the time to continue once we are home.
And at the end of my less-than-meaningful monologue of my weekend, I would like to thank the commenters who steered me in the right direction regarding insurance waiting periods for maternity. We have now realised we can TTC in about a year. I got excited after my appt the other day when I realised I had possibly picked up my last Pill prescription for a few years. Yay!
Wishing you all a good start to the week…catch you all at Open Post!

Hi Rach,
Was wondering if you could pretty please share where you got your bargain Chucks from?
Thanking you!
Tanya. X

They were an eBay find, and were secondhand (2 pairs for $10! Score!). But I have bought Chucks on ebay new before, reasonably priced.
Also check out Authentics, they are the main Aussie retailer and often found in Harbourtowns across Oz. They often throw out the discontinued colours fairly cheap.

Just had a look at the new site! Looks fantastic! What a great idea, well done to all involved & good luck!
