Spurned pharmacist drugged colleague for a year 'to make her suffer'.

By Nicole Chettle

A Sydney pharmacist has admitted repeatedly poisoning a colleague with drugs, some of which can cause infertility, to “make her suffer” after she rejected his advances.

Police said Anthony Cheung crushed drugs into the woman’s drinks, sometimes on a weekly basis.

Police facts tendered to Waverley Local Court showed Cheung, 34, met Pamela Leung at the Chinese Presbyterian Church in Surry Hills three years ago.

Cheung encouraged Ms Leung, 26, to take a position as an assistant at the pharmacy where he worked at the University of New South Wales in Kensington.

The court document said: “The accused began making sexual advances towards the victim by brushing past her breasts, buttocks and hands.

“The victim felt as though the accused had become obsessed with her,” the document said.

Ms Leung confronted Cheung, who is married to a business analyst, and the behaviour stopped.

But police said “for rebuffing his advances the accused wanted the victim to suffer from this point on”.

Cheung pleaded guilty to administering a poison intended to injure.

Drugs ‘designed to cause distress and pain’

Police said that during the 12 months from May 2015, Cheung gave Ms Leung an intoxicating substance by crushing tablets into her coffee and drinking water, sometimes on a weekly basis.

These drugs included “Phernergan, Doxylamine, Endep, Seroquel and Deptram” and were administered “with intent to cause distress and pain”.

The police document said the accused had detailed knowledge of the effects of the drugs through his studies and employment.

“The drugs were retrieved directly from the shelf at the pharmacy and are known to have a number of serious side effects including drowsiness and in some circumstances infertility after prolonged use,” the document said.

“The victim experienced hyper-sensitivity, detachment from her surroundings and intense drowsiness to the point of almost instantly collapsing,” the document stated.

It is alleged Ms Leung would rest in the pharmacy storeroom or return home where her husband would find her unresponsively asleep.

Woman was drugged 23 times over 12 months

Police said Ms Leung noticed a bitter taste in her drinks and her tongue became numb.

She has since undergone blood tests.

Cheung admitted to drugging Ms Leung 23 times.

The police document showed Cheung confessed to being in love with Ms Leung, but said he did not desire her sexually or drug her to allow sexual contact.

When asked why he had administered the drugs the accused said that he “wanted the victim to suffer”.

Cheung’s bail conditions include staying 50 metres away from Ms Leung’s home and workplace, and not attending the church where they met.

He will be sentenced in July.
