Three sold out shows in Australia. Who is she?
Her Youtube songs have received more than 100 million hits. She’s sold out three shows at the Sydney Opera House this weekend. But you’ve probably never heard of her.
Meet Kina Grannis. She’s a 26-year-old singer and songwriter from California. And she’s one of YouTube ‘s biggest finds since Justin Bieber.
The Daily Telegraph reported:
KINA Grannis has sold out three Sydney Opera House shows this weekend but if you are not a member of the YouTube generation, you may be oblivious to her charms and talent.
Grannis has been one of the video hub’s biggest finds since Justin Bieber, with her channel receiving almost 100 million views in the past four years after the Californian singer entered a competition to have a song played during the Superbowl.

Free range hens – not necessarily less stressed.
A new study has cast doubt on whether free-range hens are actually happier than cage hens.
In fact, the study suggests they’re not. A researcher from the University of Sydney looked at hens at 12 farms across NSW and found their stress levels didn’t change if they were free-range, barn or caged. Stress levels were more to do with how hens are handled.
But the research has come under fire because of it’s definition of “free range”. The Free Range Egg and Poultry Association of Australia said the research focused on large-scale farms that do not fall into their definition of free range.

Jason Akermanis apologises for ‘nasty’ Jim Stynes comments
AFL footballer Jason Akermanis said he didn’t understand what all the fuss was about surrounding Stynes’ death and that he was good, but not ‘that good’. “He got a state funeral – do all football players get a state funeral? There’s something about it all that just made me feel uncomfortable. Jim’s good, but is he that good?”
He also said, in the same interview, Stynes deserved the accolades.
In his apology, Akermanis wrote: I want to reiterate that my comments in regard to Jim have been taken entirely out of context – and again, I apologise. I did not in any way mean to offend. Ultimately, I have nothing but admiration for Jim and respect for himself and his family. Sorry.”
UPDATE: The Age newspaper reported Sunshine Coast radio station Mix 92.7FM, where Jason Akermanis worked casually, has sacked him over the comments. Akermanis is still employed by Adelaide’s FIVEaa.
Which airline serves the best food?
Turkish airlines has taken out the top spot in an international survey of economy-class airline food. A panel of international travellers was sent around the world (by website Skyscanner) and found Turkish dishes – like stuffed eggplant – were the best of the lot. Singapore airlines came in second, Etihad third and Emirates fifth. For the record – Qantas came in seventh place.

French terror shooter has been killed in end to siege
The French serial killer, with links to Al-Qaeda, has been killed in a dramatic end to the 32-hour siege on a Toulouse home last night AEDT. The man was shot in the head by RAID special police forces who had moved into the apartment in Toulouse. He was shot jumping from through a window. Three police were injured in the assault, one ‘fairly seriously’.
Mohammed Merah was wanted after a killing spree in which he gunned down three Jewish school children, a Rabbi and three off-duty French soldiers.

Oprah honours Aussie Kristian Anderson after his death
Kristian Anderson caught the world’s attention with his YouTube video professing his love for his family during his battle with cancer. He also caught Oprah’s attention when she was in Australia for ‘Oprah’s Ultimate Australian Adventure’ with the TV billionaire giving $250,000 to Anderson’s family during his fight. He passed away
“Kristian was an inspiration to us all, the way he handled cancer with fierce grace. I was so moved after meeting him and seeing how much he appreciated his family, and every precious moment.
“He taught us how to LIVE with cancer. The Light he left on earth will not be dimmed by his passing,” Winfrey said.
One of Anderson’s last wishes, before his death in January, was to publish a book about his struggle as a lasting legacy for his wife Rachel and sons Cody, 5 and Jakob, 3. That book, Days Like These, will be released on April 3.
The Harper Collins title will also raise funds for charity, with a percentage of sales from the book to go to Bear Cottage, a hospice for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

I first heard about Amina here on Mamamia. You’d included her in the photos of the week, with very little information and I had to Google her story for myself. I asked why and Rick said he was working on an article. I guess you didn’t get around to it before this tragic news…

Can someone please answer a youtube question for me?
How do these people become sensations? I’ve wondered how people knew what to look for? Do people just spend bored hours trawling through all the posts that people have put and sometimes happen upon a clip that is amazing? Or is there an ‘organisation’ to it that I don’t know about yet?
How do these artists wind up with a fan base? How do the fans know about them in the first place?

Here’s an interesting analysis of Greyson Chance, a YouTube sensation who Ellen touted as the next big thing. It pointed out there was probably more carefully marketed than they liked to let on.

And of course, the Egg Commission (largely big-scale egg producers that make their money from barn and cage hens) funded that research.

I pick Christina Grimmie over Kina Grannis. Don’t get me wrong, Kina sounds lovely, but I don’t find her as amazing as a 17yo girl who loves Zelda and covers songs using her keyboard, guessing the notes of the song by ear because she doesn’t read sheet music.
I’m so in love with Christina right now, I feel the need to share her around.

Yes, surely chickens are just as happy and stress free living with 5 friends in a wire cage with the space of an A4 piece of paper, de-clawed, de-beaked and missing most of their feathers from rubbing against the side of the cage, while living every minute of their life on a sloped wire base so their leg muscles become warped, having never felt the earth under their feet…

Agred. It should be stated who funded the research, no?

“He got a state funeral – do all football players get a state funeral? There’s something about it all that just made me feel uncomfortable. Jim’s good, but is he that good?”
I have to agree with that, why the hell are we giving a footballer a state funeral? Shouldn’t state funerals be reserved for ultra special people of some sort…people who have have put in a huge amount personally for the good of Australia?
I must admit I know very little about the dead footballer in question, maybe in his spare off game hours he invented a cure for childhood cancer or risked life and limb saving people from burning buildings.
I know I could have ‘googled’ but I’m hoping someone will enlighten me and explain why football players deserve state funerals.
loading...
The ‘dead footballer in question’ was also the co-founder of Reach, which provides mentoring and assistance to disadvantaged young people.
This was founded in 1994. So the dead footballer in question has spent nearly two decades helping Victorian teens, which I am guessing is more than you or I have done.

Jim Stynes could have done the typical post footy thing and devoted his time post football to being a commentator or buying a pub. Instead he devoted a majority of time to Reach helping disaffected youths at risk, not a particularly financially rewarding thing to do! He really was an amazing man. I am not a huge AFL supporter but I think he is worthy of a state funeral and I am sure the numbers that will attend will reflect this.

Hi Catgirl,
With all due respect, why don’t you find out a little more before you comment so dismissively about someone who literally changed the lives of over half a million young people (via Reach, which he co-founded)? I would equate that with putting in a “huge amount personally for the good of Australia(n young people)”. Stynes was a very motivating, honourable role model who actually did make a difference. He certainly wasn’t just a football player.
You can find out more about Reach here http://www.reach.org.au.
loading...
Reach is a fantastic organisation. Changed a lot of things for a LOT of young people.

Google Gary Lyons Jim Stynes tribute for a start.

I’m a little offended by how you refer to Jim Stynes as a ‘dead footballer’, as I’m sure a few others would be – it’s very dismissive of him as a person regardless of what he did outside the sport. My colleague and i who happen to work in AFL were also discussing the the state funeral honour. If you look at the definition, it’s for former GG’s, Prime Ministers or other politicians of high standing or longevity. State funeral can also be offered by the government for those who have made a significant national contribution – which I feel Jim did – I can guarantee you there will be A LOT of people wishing to pay their respects at his goodbye – which the state funeral will allow

Yes, you are right.
You should have Googled and educated yourself, rather than rely on others to “enlighten” you after you post quite a disrespectful comment.
Three times Victorian of the year and recipient of The Order of Australia. None given because of his football prowess (which was also quite extraordinary). Not exactly a typical, run of the mill kind of guy. One might even suggest he is a person who has… put in a huge amount personally for the good of Australia…

Like with yumi, what akermanis sai about Jim stynes was in poor taste. He is notorious for his big mouth. He got the sack from one of his jobs for it. Good enough.
I’m not going to join in slagging him off. He will face the consequences and that will have to be enough for everyone whether they like it or not.
BTW, I agree Jim stynes probably got the state funeral for his work outside of football.

Oh, Aka, how I loved watching you play, but it’s been all downhill since then. What’s the matter? Can’t you cope when someone other than yourself gets the accolades- even if they have to die to do so?

I was kind of relieved to see that Jason Akermanis got death threats.
Sorry, Jason, but here’s why. It restored my faith just a little.
The anonymous, ugly Australian underbelly are prepared to spray poison outside any decent or legal boundaries at female public figures if they criticise sporting or war heroes.
But, at least they are also prepared to spit venom at a male public figure (who made his name through sport) and call for his sacking.
In my opinion, Jason’s apology was better than Yumi’s, but also in my opinion, his offending commentary was more stupid and sustained than Yumi’s. Additionally, Jason got the knife from one of his jobs.
The Yumi & Mia backlashes really opened my eyes. The threats, sexism & racism were absolutely shit. The Akermanis backlash showed me that at least that shit’s evenhanded and not always invoked when it’s a woman in the firing line.

I don’t know. I haven’t read his latest letter but I happened to be flicking through the radio yesterday and heard that he was about to be on the Fifi and Jules shows so decided to listen. He didn’t apologise at first and just kept saying that it was taken out of context and that he didn’t mean to cause offence and that no one could understand how shit he was feeling (as if anyone cares..)- he then said that he didn’t regret what he said! Obviously Jules Lund lost it a little at that and told he that he should regret what he said and he should apologise and only then did he…
Perhaps he was able to better articulate himself in that letter… but after what I heard yesterday I simply have no interest in hearing his side of the story ever again.
loading...
If you had to guess the future – will the anger escalate over the next week and a half to the levels of threatening to kill Akermanis’ children (if he has any), or will it be all but forgotten by Sunday?
loading...
Realistically? Unlikely that this will see the same oxygen in the media to fuel that kind of crap.
Why won’t it get the same oxygen? Here’s what I consider to be a couple reasons.
1. Everyone knows that Akermanis is a bit of a media whore dill.
2. Men are relatively apathetic about social media and don’t get the cut through that issues important/relevant to women do:
http://mashable.com/2011/09/22/women-social-network/
Look at the number of comments in here on this. Women don’t really care about this event and therefore this discussion won’t propagate to the same extent.
I think that kind of people reacting to a ‘speak ill of the dead’ issue are not going to be quite as nasty as those who react to the ‘dud root’ provocation.

seriously Jason Akermanis will do anything to keep himself in the media spotlight. As if you say something like that, even if it was taken out of context, two days after someone has died.
Whether he deserves a state funeral, well i don’t know, but if the people want it then why shouldn’t he have one? I reckon Jason is just being petty and jealous because he realises people will never respect him as much as they did Jim Stynes because most things Jason does is to further his own career.
loading...
I don’t think we should be giving Jason Akermanis any more air time – this post included!
loading...
While I don’t believe Akermanis should have said what he said, I don’t really see anything wrong with it. Remember that song “The Eulogy Song” by The Chaser boys?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OyJGrSFnoY
Why MUST we remember people through rose coloured glasses? Yes Jim Stynes probably was a wonderful man, I don’t know for sure because I never met him and all the news I ever saw or heard about him was all about his illness and the great things he did but like people have those memories of him, Aker had other memories of him and while yes I agree, talking about those memories just after he has died, probably wasn’t the right time to do it but is there ever a right time to do it?
No one is perfect in life, no, not even Jim Stynes and it does no one any favours to remember someone as if they were a God.
And I tend to agree with Aker when he questions the state funeral. As my husband said when – yes it’s sad and yes he probably did lots of good things in his life but so did plenty of other people and they aren’t getting state funerals.
loading...
I think what Jason said was not factually incorrect, it was more a timing issue.
loading...
I don’t think his football career has anything to do with the reason for his state funeral, it’s in recognition to his involvement to the community and how many lives he has touched and enriched, maybe even saved through creating the reach program. Even the queen has recognized his efforts by awarding him an OAM for his tireless work with charities and he was twice awarded Victorian of the year. Yes he and akermanis have both won brownlows but Again, he is recieving a state funeral out of recognition to his work to the state and country , not his football career!

In other tech nerd news, the US government crowdsourced mobile app to help prevent sexual assault has been released. Called Circle of 6, it lets you send ‘call me’ or ‘come pick me up’ text messages to up to six trusted friends in two taps without anyone who is looking at your screen knowing what you are doing (it’s quick and not obvious you are calling for help).
It’s US centric of course, but an interesting solution. Can’t wait to see an Aussie version.

Jason Akermanis is an idiot. A couple of weeks ago, Jim was told his condition was critical and that he should no longer be working or flying. However he flew on his deathbed to deliver a workshop for the management of the childcare group I work for here in North Queensland. He not only started the reach foundation to get children off the street, but he was a licensee for a group of childcare centres and delivered motivational workshops to the management in them because he wanted to give kids a better start so that they wouldn’t have to be rescued off the streets. And he continued to do all this inspirational work until the very end. People are flying from all over the country to attend Jim’s funeral because his football career was one thing he did in a list a mile long. People who knew Jim seem to have difficulty putting into words how inspirational Jim was. I know because I met him and I saw the effect he had on people. That is why Jim gets a state funeral and douchebags like Jason Akermanis will get a normal one.

Beautifully, beautifully said lucindainthesky. I am truly amazed that the more I read about Jim Stynes, the more he packed into such a tragically short time on our planet.
More and more givers like Jim deserve to be acknowledged.

Thanks Emeri. Admittedly, being a Queenslander, I didn’t know very much about Jim until recently. But I have heard a lot about him from the director at the childcare centre I work as a Kindergarten teacher at. She has been lucky enough to work one on one with him quite a lot in the last 5 years and will be attending Jim’s magnificent state funeral. I will watch the broadcast if I can. The day Jim passed she was in tears talking about how much Jim had taught her and that he was angel on Earth and whenever she is having a shit day she always thinks of Jim and how he has taught her that life is about making a positive difference and smiling through tough times. And she is one of many, many lives that Jim has personally made a difference to and changed for the better.

I’m a Queenslander too!

I am not a Melbourne FC supporter nor do I really care much for the whole game but Jim Stynes was definately more than ‘just’ a football player. His involvement with the reach foundation and the way he inspired everyone to live life to the fullest does not even come Close to explaining who he was. Ackermanis needs his mouth permanently wired shut. He’s as bad as Kyle sandilands and his offensive remarks in my books.
