This month’s edition of Intelligent Life features an untouched Cate Blanchett. Editor of the magazine Time de Lisle said “When other magazines photograph actresses, they routinely end up running heavily Photoshopped images, with every last wrinkle expunged. Cate Blanchett, by contrast, appears on our cover in her working clothes, with the odd line on her face and faint bags under her eyes. She looks like what she is — a woman of 42, spending her days in an office, her evenings on stage and the rest of her time looking after three young children,”
Cate kicks off this week’s gallery plus there’s a bottom-less magazine cove, the longest bridal train in the world, Kate Moss‘ latest photo shoot and much more.

I like Cate Blanchett (and any other celeb) looking natural like that … did you see the Sunday Life cover of Jackie O yesterday? The art director has completely abandoned Photoshop … and moved on to Illustrator.

No photoshop, but professionally done make-up, lighting, styling and photographer, no doubt. Unlike for mere mortals, who will still be comparing themselves to her. Please. It’s a good step forward, but it ain’t Cate in real life running to the milk bar to pick up a loaf of bread …(for that, thank God, we haven’t yet stamped out paparazzi)

I saw her at Lane Cove Coles a while ago and she looked like she had just got out of the pool (it was summer) she had wet hair. I was trying not to stare but she looked pretty bloody good.

I see Ms Blanchett around the traps at the STC a fair bit. She really does look that good in real life. It’s kind of unfair.

I am so sick of hearing about photoshop. A little bit (or preferably lot) less please about photoshop!!!I know I can choose not to click on it (and I only clicked to write this) but it gives me less of interest on Mamamia as these posts keep coming up over and over and over and over again.

I respectfully disagree. Mia is the leading advocate in Australia for raising awareness about photoshop and its consequences. I think most people who visit the site would be aware of this. It’s an important issue that I don’t see discussed in many other places, so I don’t have a problem with it being raised a lot on this site. ONGOING discussion about an issue is really the only thing that helps bring about change a lot of the time.
So, as you said, if it’s annoying you just try not to click on those articles.

Not photoshopped? Oh man, now I really do feel bad about myself.
Bring back the photoshop so we can at least blame her good looks on that!

I saw Cate Blanchett out a little while ago while shopping. She had on no makeup. She actually looks alot better than this picture. She is very, very luminous.

Love the Cate Blanchett cover! She’s so stunning without photoshop. Seriously why do they normally bother. So refreshing, more please!

If I had Izabel Goulart’s bum and legs I’d walk around pantless all day too!!
loading...
I’m pretty sure she doesn’t have that bum and legs either. Oh the joy of photoshop.

A magazine has the temerity to actually portray a beautiful 40-something actress just as she is WITH her acceptance??! What next – advertisers actually taking heed that portraying realistic women is just as effective in marketing? Kudos to the editor and Cate – hope sales go through the roof!!

I wish I was as ugly as baggy eyed and wrinkled as Cate Blanchett at 42!
She is divine, in so many ways. Well done, Cate.
loading...
Cate Blanchett is beautiful and I love seeing her ‘untouched’. She has more class and integrity than most of Hollywood put together. You go girl…

Cate looks fantastic – as always. Thank god a women with 3 young children can wear the bags under her eyes with pride!

(deep breath..)
I don’t like the Cate Blanchett magazine cover. Yes, it was brave of her, but it looks like a tired, yet beautiful 42 year old. I see a tired 38 year old in the mirror every morning. I don’t want another one on my glossy magazine.
Yes, I understand photo shopping ( I read mamamia, how could I not).
No, I do not feel bad or fat or ugly when I look at magazines.
Yes, some photoshopping is ridiculous and I appreciate that, and can see how that is harmful.
BUT, when I do indulge in a magazine to read I want glossy, I want beautiful, I want models, I want flawlessness.
I want an hour of looking at perfect photos of luxurious things and gorgeous people.
That’s just what I want.
(and by magazines I mean Vogue or Bazaar etc not NW or WW.)
loading...
But this magazine isn’t Vogue or Bazaar – if she was on those covers, I’m sure they’d touch & retouch.
loading...
But SHE IS gorgeous, and just about flawless. And she is the head of the Sydney Theatre company, not just a face.
loading...
Now isn’t that just so refreshing. It’s like looking at an actual person!!
loading...
I feel the human race may have peaked with Cate Blanchett.

The WordPress plugin mamamia is using for the image gallery works really badly on an iPhone! It skips half the pics and has really bad captioning. How many visits are coming from mobile devices? Surely you can test a better plugin. What about nextgen gallery?
loading...
I agree! I never know what’s going on with the pictures on the gallery unless they’ve been talked about in the article, because the captions aren’t there.
loading...
It’s awful isn’t it!? I have to view them on the laptop if I want to make sense of them. I really enjoy them but wish I could see them on my iPhone!
loading...
They don’t work on an iPad either. I now don’t bother
loading...
Most ppl these days would use an iPhone or iPad. I never log on to a PC. Please fix it Mamamia!!!!
loading...
They work on my iPad.
loading...
Agreed. I always read the site on an iPhone.
loading...
I always use an iPhone – I can see about every third picture but none of the captions line up.
loading...
Same here on an iPhone. Today the pics are half chopped off. I don’t understand why it hasnt been fixed already seeing that people have complained about it for months.
loading...
It doesn’t work at all on my Mac… No arrows, no slide-show at all.

Hey there,
Mikey from the Tech team.
Just wanted to let you know that we are currently working on a new version of our mobile site and gallery plugin to solve the problems you are seeing on Mamamia.
We are currently using nextgen gallery for our site, but as you can see this does have limitations with our mobile theme.
It is something we been working on fixing for awhile, but the tough thing with these kinds of projects is we only have a very tiny team here at Mamamia, (tiny being 1 person) we have to shuffle around priorities. As you will see in the coming month some rad new ventures we will be launching.
Also business kitten has been notified.

Thanks for the feedback. It really does make us (well, me) feel better. Up until now it really has seemed like we’re talking to a brickwall. And how cute is that cat??
loading...
I love Business Kitten.
And I love a techy with a sense of humour! Mikey to the rescue!

Seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms, too much tinkling I guess.
I heard Barry Humphrey’s on the ABC the other day, he said his “farewell tour is in the same vein as John Farnham, the first of many”

J’dore Cate. You are my postergirl.

Cate looks gorgeous!!! ‘Real’ ly Gorgeous!
loading...
Well I’m the same age as Cate and that makes me feel a whole lot better. Not sure the SKII mob will be very happy though.
loading...
Really?! I think they’ll be thrilled! I was just thinking how beautiful and glowing and smooth her skin is – with very few wrinkles for her age and skin tone, really!
loading...
love the picture of Cate looking like a normal 42 year old. How different is this image to the glamour shots we usually see!
Hope we get to see a lot more photos like this so we can remember that stars are normal looking people under all the make-up and clothes and photoshopping.
loading...
Love love love the photo of Cate.
loading...
I’m 26 and have twice that many wrinkles! Not to mention adult acne… Cate looks amazing, I should be so lucky…

I am confused…

However underneath her image in the gallery is this….
Cate Blanchett on the cover of Intelligent Life. (Photoshopped Image)
Is “photoshopped image” a standard comment that now gets put on all mamamia images?

Good point – fixed it

Thanks

I am willing to bet this picture still has minor photoshopping
.
Photoshop has a place like make up and going to the hairdresser. Moderation is the key.
p.s sorry if I double posted, I thought I had posted already but it isn’t showing.

I don’t think it’s been photoshopped, but it’s been professionally lit, and she’s been professionally styled. I consider the question of photoshop somewhat academic. Even without it I will never look like a model does after she’s been groomed.
