The asylum seekers from China

Asylum seeker boat reaches Australia … wants to keep going

A seaworthy boat filled with Chinese asylum seekers, from the persecuted Falun Gong, have been hauled into Darwin but refuse to declare asylum.

They want to keep going to New Zealand where processing conditions are more humane.

“And we’ve got to have mandatory detention,” the Opposition Leader told reporters in western Sydney.

“It’s only because New Zealand lacks mandatory detention that that boat is apparently headed there.”

Neither the Department of Immigration nor the office of Immigration Minister Chris Bowen could comment on why the Chinese nationals, who set out from Malaysia, want to keep going.

The Prime Minister said Australia was not in a position to detain the asylum seekers against their will as their boat was fit for the journey and they had not asked for asylum.

Zeddie Little

The Internet crowns latest meme sensation

When Zeddie Little entered this 10km marathon with hopes of just making it to the end. Instead, someone snapped his photo and was so enamoured with his photogenic mid-marathon smile at the camera they posted it online. The rest, as they say, is viral history.

The photo became a meme (a themed idea that gets tweaked and changed by Internet users over time) called Ridiculously Photogenic Guy and in no time Zeddie Little (that is his real name) became an Internet sensation. Who knows how long the fame will last, but it’s interesting to watch.

Ridiculously Photogenic Guy has spawned a ton of altered versions of the original photo, with commentary like, “Goes For Run: Inadvertently Teaches World How To Spell “Ridiculously,” “Photobombs Wedding Picture: Nobody Minds,” and “Picture Gets Put Up As Employee Of The Month: For A Company That He Doesn’t Work For.”

Zeddie has taken to the role with aplomb, answering banal questions directed at him on Twitter. He loves jokes, Ireland and saying ‘gosh’.

Perhaps his most salient tweet: “I’m not a celebrity guys I’m just a normal person!”

Not right now, Zeddie, not right now.

Matthew Newton arrested again

The trouble-prone son of Australian showbiz stars Bert and Patti Newton, Matthew Newton, has been charged with resisting police arrest and trespassing. The actor was wrestled to the ground by police after being warned several times about his behaviour in the early hours of Saturday morning, a local bar manager said. ”He was a belligerent drunk and the cops asked him to leave several times,” Jason, the manager of Mr Moe’s Restaurant and Bar, told The Age.

His resistance was ‘non-violent’ and he posted a $2000 bond for release and will reappear in court in the following days. He was in Miami trying to rebuild his career, taking acting classes with Arrested Development’s Jeffrey Tambor.

But any criminal record in the United States makes it extremely difficult for foreigners to even remain in the country, let alone get work.

While Newton has himself racked up a few mugshots, he’s not alone. You may or may not recognise some of these:

Should pregnant women be breath-tested for cigarettes?

The science has been in for a while on the damage smoking can cause to mother and child during a pregnancy, but that hasn’t stopped all mothers from puffing away during gestation. It’s a problem because many feel so stigmatised they won’t even raise the issue with their doctor or GP. Director of Quit Victoria Fiona Sharkie said Victoria, or even Australia, could follow the lead of the United Kingdom and perform carbon monoxide breath tests to determine if pregnant women are smoking so that they may be counseled. But should they?

Fairfax reported:

New data on smoking rates for pregnant women in Victorian public hospitals shows 14.6 per cent or 10,286 said they had smoked in the first 20 weeks. This dropped to 5.6 per cent or 3945 after 20 weeks.

About 4 per cent of women attending private hospitals also smoked in the first five months, reducing to 2 per cent after 20 weeks, the state government figures for 2009-10 reveal.

The report did not define how much the women smoked, so it could include some who smoked until they realised they were pregnant. Population surveys in Victoria have estimated about 15 per cent of all women smoked in 2008.

Crackdown on sexy pop music videos

Rihanna SM bondage 380x254 News: Asylum seekers reach Australia ... want to skip it

Rihanna in the music video for 'S&M'

British politicians want overly gyrating popstar hips to be a thing of the past, at least for under 18s, as Tory Prime Minister David Cameron looks at ways to prevent youngsters from viewing hyper-sexualised music content online.

The PM is looking at rules that would force websites hosting such videos to install age verification systems similar to those used for online gambling, The (London) Sunday Telegraph reports.

Around 200 million videos are watched each month on Vevo, a video website that, unlike YouTube, does not ask viewers to confirm they are over 18 before watching a video.

The video for Rihanna’s song “S&M” has been viewed more than 37 million times on Vevo alone. Ofcom, the UK’s broadcasting regulator, warned last year that the “highly sexualized” video produced for “S&M” contained scenes of “sexual bondage, dominance and sadomasochism.”

- Mia Freedman has a few choice words about the trend for pop music toward the over-sexualised.

Dad-to-be loses case to stop ex-girlfriend from having abortion

A man lost a court injunction aimed at stopping his former girlfriend, who was 16, from having an abortion. He also asked the court to keep her in Queensland and for access to the birthing suite when the child was born, plus medical test results. The teenager claims she has no intention of terminating the pregnancy. The man asked for full responsibility for the child once it was born.

Tony Abbott’s lesbian sister fails to soften gay marriage stance

Christine Forster is a lesbian and Leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott’s sister. She came out publicly over the weekend and told the nation she was in a happy, live-in relationship with her partner Virginia.

“We’ve had a lot of interesting discussions and we’ll keep those discussions going, but fundamentally I want to be a politician that keeps my commitments,” Mr Abbott said.

“We went into the election with a position and as far as I’m concerned, that’s the position we will keep.”

Mr Abbott said he has grappled with the issue greatly.

“It’s easy to be torn on a subject like this,” he said.

“I have close family members as well as lots of close friends who are gay. Many of them strongly support gay marriage.”

Oh, and Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion

But if you’re a fan of the photo-sharing social media app, nothing will change. For now.

Miranda Kerr

Miranda Kerr’s model friend says you don’t have to suffer cancer if you don’t want

Model Liana Werner-Gray wrote on Miranda Kerr’s website in a blog that people ‘don’t have to die if they don’t want to’. She noted she cured herself of cancer due to fresh air, positive thinking, enemas and bath salts. As the Daily Telegraph reported, there was an uproar on the site:

Some Kerr fans have reacted angrily to Werner-Gray’s blog, branding it “cruel” for giving people “false hope”.

“Although your frame of mind helps to an extent, it is a gross falsification to try and say that you can cure aggressive cancers through mind power,” one wrote. “Use positive thinking techniques to help these people enjoy what time they have left, not to give them false and misguided hope.”

Kerr’s spokeswoman Carlii Lyon said Werner-Gray was not employed by the model.

“The blog written by Liana Werner-Gray entitled Is There Already A Cure For Cancer is a reflection of Liana’s personal beliefs and ideas only,” she said.

“The blog is monitored for obscene language and defamatory material, however the bloggers are free to express their ideas and personal research.”

- Positive thinking won’t cure cancer.

- Google is not the same as science.

Actually, the average (mean) global weaning age is a little over 3 years of age, and almost all anthropological, medical and scientific research suggests that the ‘natural’ weaning age of humans is between 3 and 6. The human body is designed to produce breastmilk for at least a few years per child, and can, in fact, continue to produce milk for many years without birthing (as in the case of wet nurses who used to feed several children in succession).

Of course, women choose to breastfeed for however long suits themselves and their families, however it is completely normal from a biological point of view to breastfeed for three or more years.

The more interesting part of this article is how Mayam has been labelled an alternative parent?? She might be breastfeeding a little longer than usual, but lots of parents let their children sleep in the same room with them. And there is nothing alternative about not using nappies during toilet training, that is common practice. Slow news day maybe? lol

Ultimately unless we are talking late term abortion without a compelling reason I don’t think society, the boyfriend or anyone else has any business in telling a woman whether she should or should not proceed with a pregnancy.

But I’ve always been a bit concerned about the inequity in that she can terminate or keep as she wishes and the bloke either doesn’t have a child or does and gets no say in it as well as 18 years worth of child support even if she deceived him into pregnancy (I believe Boris Becker found himself in that situation where a woman “took care” of him by non procreative means and then impregnated herself with a finger – he argued he shouldn’t be liable as there was no expectation of pregnancy in those circumstances but to no avail and is paying through the nose as a result).

I think the idea of a “paper abortion” would go someway to reduce this inequity without making women go through with pregnancies they don’t want. Under this, men could at a sufficiently early stage of the pregnancy sign a legally binding contract and perhaps post a heavy financial bond that they would have no contact with the child in any way. In return they would have all financial obligations removed. Once the pregnancy is too far gone or the baby is born, tough luck. The woman can of course go ahead with the pregnancy or not but without any expectation of financial support. I suspect this site will not be all that sympathetic to this suggestion but I’d be interested in why not.

I used to really like Miranda, her girl next door beauty, nice smile, Australian girl done good. I grew up with her from Dolly onwards. Then I heard her speak, read interviews that weren’t PR fluff pieces (the worst thing her managers ever did was let Miranda speak beyond a few careful soundbites about why she loves modelling and Australia) and now her blog, the people it attracts as posters, has come to light. It all adds up to my suspicion that Miranda is a bit of a twit. It may not be her post, but it is her blog and if she wasn’t a twit she would have the post taken down.

Tony Abbott has a gay sister yet he refuses to support same sex marriage.

To my knowledge, the Prime Minister does not have a gay sister….yet refuses to support gay marriage.

I disagree with the stand that both take. Over at “The Punch”, I’ve just read that Dr Karen Phelps has taken a major swipe at Tony Abbott and the Liberal Party over this issue….yet fails to mention Julia Gillard’s name or the fact that failure to support same sex marriage is also ALP policy.

Bradley, many of the Anti-Gay Marriage Brigade argue that Gay Marriage goes against “family values”. To those of us who do support Gay Marriage, it makes the likes of Tony Abbott and his ilk who have gay family members look like the hypocrites they are.

For all I know, his sister may not want to marry her partner – but would he really condemn her for doing it, if it made her happy?

If Gillard stood by her Anti-Gay marriage stance after one of her family members came out, I’d call her a hypocrite, too.

Since she is neither married, nor apparently having a gay sibling, I have no criticism of her personally. The ALP Policy deserves equal criticism as the Coalition’s Policy, for a peculiar misinterpretation of voter sentiment, though.

Re-education and support groups. I saw a series run in the UK about mums who smoked while 15+ weeks pregnant. All they really needed to know is that the smoking they were doing was very likely to harm the unborn bub. The series then helped them on a quitting strategy, and while it wasnt without fault, its better than doing nothing.

Yeah i think it was! If not it was something similar. There were 3 smokers, and another woman who was way too stressed and on-the-go to have a healthy pregnancy, and thought nothing of it.

It definitely did my head in, but it might have been because i wanted to instantly backhand the young smoking mothers-to-be. At the end of it, i was just glad that they had quit or cut back, and that the babies were healthy.

I’m very anti-smoking as we reformed smokers tend to be. Whether you are pregnant or not, smoking cigarettes is an unwise passtime. It is quite clear that smoking harms the individual and that passive smoking harms other individuals.

But, to smoke or not to smoke is the choice made by the individual.

The suggestion that pregnant women be breath tested for nicotine is draconian at it’s best, dictatorial at it’s worst. George Orwell would be proud !

As for Matthew Newton…..old news. The guy is his own worst enemy. He is a deadset danger to himself and others. It’s time for the authorities to act before he really does some even more serious damage around the place.

Tony Abbott’s gay sister….also old news. I don’t agree with Abbott’s stand on same sex marriage, but this story ran in every Sunday paper and anyone who is anyone has already commented on it. The 24 hour news cycle has taken made two circuits of the track. Inclusion of this piece is just more about Abbott bashing than adding some new food for thought to the debate.

And where does his mental illness figure in that? I have the same illness and while I don’t behave like Matthew and go around punching people (clearly some things are his personality not his illness) there are certain things you do that are unpalatable and they come soley from having the illness. He doesn’t get a full free pass, or even half of one, but the ‘but he’s from a good family!’ thing doesn’t fly – so am I and I can’t help myself sometimes. It’s an illness.

Thoroughly decent of Tony Abbott to maintain his silence and protect his sister’s privacy through years of ill informed vitriol thrown at him. Another measure of his integrity.

Not a Liberal voter and not a fan of Tony Abbott – but I must say my opinion of him has been raised by this. He’s never outed his sister (which she obviously didn’t want until now) to try and take the sting out of his anti-gay-marriage stance. Yes, there’s integrity in that.

A bit dramatic, Rick? Two different issues. Abbott hasn’t dishonoured or disrespected his sister in any way. He has supported her through difficult times and accepts her and loves her as she is, just as the vast majority of families do.

Homosexual marriage is a stand alone issue that has consequences for society that the gay community is trying to keep from the greater population. The issue of polyamory for instance. The organisers of the Mardi Gras tried to discriminate against them by blocking them from the parade but were forced to back down. With UK birth certificates now listing three legal parents (the gay couple and the biological parent) we are entitled to ask where homosexual marriage will lead. There are already moves to legalise polyamory and once gay marriage is approved we won’t have a leg to stand on.

Sometimes Rick, we have to make sacrifices for the greater good of society and put our own wishes on the back burner.

Gay marriage might give the progressives a quick high but what comes next might make them wish they’d never touched it in the first place.

I think no one wins when women want an abortion and the potential father wants to keep the child. There is no compromise and someone gets put out either way. I think the man in Qld was a bit delusional wanting the court to enforce access to the birth suite when his baby was born though. It’s still gotta come out of her body and she might not want him to see it anymore.
I saw a show on foxtel where they breath test women for nicotine an counsel women on quitting smoking, healthy eating and reducing stress during pregnancy. Mostly it worked, but not always. I would imagine that women still have the right to refuse the service.

I’m not sure that nicotine testing expectant mothers is going to achieve much. Making them go to counselling is not going to make them give up if they don’t want to and it is such a small number that continue smoking anyway. The other side of it is that many Doctors don’t necessarily encourage women to completely give up smoking right away which accounts for the big drop after 20 weeks. In fact giving up too quickly or going cold turkey is bad – it is stressful physically for any heavy smoker but in pregnant women can actually be more harmful than beneficial to the baby. Most Doctors would encourage the path that would place the least stress on the baby, even if it meant cutting back significantly but not giving up entirely. I think that the majority of women do try to do what is best for their unborn child.

It’s actually a myth that giving up completely can be more stressful – at least according to all the “experts” on the news. I’m currently 9 months pregnant & while I’m not a smoker, was asked at all initial appointments about smoking/drinking habits. In my case it was irrelevant but they do offer support/advice to those who do. Not sure how much a test will do to further that? If it’s a volantary test & someone isn’t willing to give up smoking chances are they won’t take the test or may feel too intimidated to turn up to medical appointments.

I saw on a British show that they test the carbon monoxide levels in pregnant women who continue to smoke , so that they can show them how the carbon monoxide affects their babies. Most of the women are shocked to find out how little oxygen their babies are getting, this helps them to understand how smoking is harming their babies. It would be great to do that here as part of prenatal testing and education.

I really feel for the dads who lose a wanted child because the mother opts for an abortion. It must be terrible to have absolutely no say about their future until the baby is actually born. I couldn’t imagine how I would feel if the tables were turned and a father not wanting the child could result in an abortion. Even the possibility would be devastating.

Regarding the smoking in pregnancy (or even around children) – I really don’t understand why this till happens. I know that sometimes the addiction is really hard to beat, but with all the information out there about what it can do to not only you but the baby isn’t that enough motivation to quit? I think the reason why these women feel so stigmatised is because they are putting their babies in danger. I’m not saying that we should be pointing our finger at them, they need support more than anything else. But do they really expect that people are going to say “no, no, it’s alright. your baby your decision and that decision is perfectly okay” for something like this? I remember when my son was in Special Care, and the baby next to him had been admitted for failure to thrive. I was flabbergasted that his mother (who was perfectly lovely and was a really attentive mum) kept going downstairs for a smoke. I couldn’t help wondering whether her smoking was what had contributed to his being there.

I was a smoker who quit during pregnancy. As the story points out, those stats take in people who didn’t know they were pregnant – I didn’t smoke any less in the first 3 months because I didn’t know I was pregnant.
The way I’ve understood this idea is so that people will be honest with their caregivers about their smoking, so they can get help to quit and are made aware of the dangers of doing it. Smokers are aware of the dangers but do it anyway. It’s a tough addiction to break. I’ve had a couple of smokes (literally 2) since I quit, and it made me feel really ill. But I do know how hard it was to quit and I hate those evangelical ex-smokers who lecture everyone.
I was honest with doctors and midwives, they didn’t bust my chops too badly about it. Even before I knew I was preggo my body turned off smoking and drinking anyway.

Should pregant women be breath tested? Firstly I thought well if they are ignorant enough to smoke that is ultimately their choice I guess. But then I thought, we get tested for alcohol so that we don’t harm others. I guess testing for nicotine would be the same, to protect the unborn baby. Don’t think it would stop the hardcore smokers though. Why don’t we just start the ball rolling on getting them banned altogether. Save lots more lives and money.

I don’t think that making someone click “I’m over 18″ will stop them from watching a video on Youtube. It’s not like you have to show proof of age or anything.

I feel like that is just putting a band aid on a gaping wound. The problem is two-fold,
    1. Sexualised video clips are being created and nothing is being to stop them or monitor them, and
    2. Parents are not monitoring the the online activity of their children.

This is what I don’t understand.

Politicians saying, “We went into the election with policy X, so we are committing to it”.

Shouldn’t the fact that you didn’t win the election outright be a bit of a sign that maybe your policies are out of touch with voters?

I would think that losing an election (and copping a lot of flack for your party’s position on something) would be the best time to rethink policies and break “promises” because people didn’t like your promises to begin with.

I wonder about that too, Shannon. Especially when public sentiment is overwhelmingly in support of something (same sex marriage, here) yet the parties still want to pander to a conservative minority. Labor are more guilty of this than the Libs, but don’t seem to get that if they took a stand and did something, it would be applauded AND get them back a fair chunk of those wavering – and get back the people who have gone to the Greens and seen them have more and more representation as a result, which they then bemoan!

Yeah but more money doesn’t equal more votes. Wouldn’t you go with popular opinion? People have been saying this about Labor for ages now – be a true Labor party and stand for something rather than trying to pander to conservatives. They already have a party. Us lefties had one too, but they’ve become Lib lite, so we’ve gone to the Greens. Why don’t they listen? Or if they don’t want to change, admit that they’re not really the Labor party any more?

I have no idea what you just said but feel strangely compelled to comment anyway.

Has it occurred to no-one that neither the libs or the ALP are changing their stance because they really don’t agree with same sex marriage? It would be easier if they “pandered” to opinion polls. But maybe then they would be accused of selling out for votes.

It would be nice if we could have an intelligent conversation in Australia on how our political system actually works. Here is an opener: it bears no relationship to the American system.

Dont get the idea that Im giving you the green light on everything you have put up.
2/ The media need to leave Mathew Newton alone as he is a non story. He obviously needs help so leave the experts to it – most people dont care.

For those supporting same sex marraige, it isn’t a voting intention determiner. For those against, it is.

Just a few weeks ago there was an opinion piece where the writer said she disagreed with Tony’s stance on several social issues yet still vote Liberal at the next election. Those social issues, while personally important to her, weren’t as important as the big picture she has for our country.

You’ll never see a counter article “I’m against gay marriage but I’m so concerned for the environment I’m voting Greens” because there is no big picture issue bigger than being against same sex marriage.

Labor went pro-gay marraige and their primary vote didn’t shift a single bit. They didn’t ‘recover’ anyone from the Greens, and of course, got no one from Libs.

Tony doesn’t want to put off the 30% or so against, because they’re all currently voting for him. The other 20% voting for him (who, presumably, support same sex marriage) do so for other reasons. He’s got his bases covered, policially, so why change?

If Tony supported gay marriage, those anti-voters would shift to Family First and other fringe right groups. When he wins goverment next year, his worst nightmare would be to have to appease both the Greens AND Family First to get legislation passed through the Senate.

His anti-same sex marriage stance is smart, politically.
