Women’s basketball champion Lauren Jackson has been announced as Australia’s flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony in London. Jackson is captain of our women’s basketball team the Opals and is attending her fourth Olympics.
Reports are that Jackson’s immediate reaction to being told about the honour was to respond by asking, “why me?” Renowned as a team player in every sense of the word, Jackson’s humility was on show again this morning as she told Australian media that she was “blown away” by the decision.
Jackson was born in Albury and grew up in Canberra, where she trained at the Australian Institute of Sport.
The triple Olympic silver medalist is the first woman to carry the flag for Australia at a summer games Opening Ceremony in 20 years.
And she’s a self described feminist. What a legend.
Congratulations Lauren and best of luck for the Games!
“When Nick called me into his office I thought, initially, that I was in trouble for something I’d done,” she said, still visibly reeling as she spoke to media after nervously practising the swing she will repeat before the eyes of the world tonight.
“But he said ‘No. Can you keep a secret? You’re the flag bearer.’”Jackson… is a proud feminist but said that an occasion like this was neither the place nor time to be mounting campaigns. For Jackson the story didn’t need subtext to be meaningful.
“Tomorrow night, even tonight, is just the proudest moment of my life, no doubt about it. To be named the leader of the team, and to be able to walk in front of Australia at an Olympic Games is something that I never, in my wildest dreams, would have imagined I could achieve.”
“I can’t think of anything that would ever top this. Obviously a gold medal would be awesome, but I feel like this is something that will never happen again.”
“This moment makes me feel like nothing’s impossible.” Jackson said.
And on that note, we’re happy to add Lauren to our gallery of feminists we admire.

Lauren Jackson, basketballer
You can tune in on Saturday morning from 5.30am to watch the Opening Ceremony and see Lauren carrying the flag for Australia. Mamamia will be live tweeting the event, and we suspect that will be pretty much unmissable – so in case you’re NOT ALREADY, you had better start following us on Twitter: @Mamamia
You can also get up to speed on Lauren Jackson and the Opals’ medal chances here.
Who are the female athletes you’ll be watching at the games?

hi i am 10 years old and i want to say that i love Lauren and i am going to tell you that i want to be like her when i am older and i play basket ball to!!!!

Big show of equality for gay female athletes. Well done to LJ.
loading...
It is such a pity feminism has ANYTHING to do with her selection. I just want the best athlete for the job. Saying she is a feminist is equivalent to me as saying she is a proud vegetarian – it should have nothing to do with the selection.
loading...
I’m still a bit disappointed that cyclist Stuart O’Grady isn’t carrying the flag. According to what I heard on the radio today, he is the only 6-time Olympian not to carry the flag for his country. He’s won a Gold, Silver and 2 Bronze medals.
I’m also disappointed that the flag bearer role discussion turned into a gender-based bunfight.
Lauren will do a superb job but I think others were more worthy.
loading...
Aside from the female or feminist perspectives on this matter, I am pretty impressed that Lauren will be carrying the flag. Although I’ve known who she is, I haven’t followed her career because I don’t follow basketball. But I just get a really strong impression from her, through her interviews, that she is humble, strong, laid back, passionate, good natured and has resolve: a great Australian representative!
loading...
I think this is awesome news – I actually want to watch the Olympics now!!
So deserving, she is such a strong, tall, athletic woman, and this is her 4th olympics! She’s been bballing for Aus for at least SIXTEEN years!
loading...
So pleased that Natalie Cook didn’t get the job !
I absolutely would have barracked for NZ.
loading...
Thank goodness the person chosen to carry the flag is a declared feminist.
I would have had to barrack for NZ otherwise !
loading...
Why try to turn this into a feminist issue? If I remember correctly it was a group of women who did the final carrying and lighting of the Olympic flame at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Seems everyone forgot that particular honour when bitching about women not being flag holderer.
The flag holderer should be chosen as being the most worthy athlete. What does gender have to do with it?
So what if a woman hasn’t been the flag holderer for 20 years? Does anyone think the athletes who have done it since are less than deserving?
For the record, Lauren Jackson is a wonderful choice to be flag holderer, so would Natalie Cook, Andrew Hoy, Liesel Jones and quite a few others who have made sterling contributions to Australian Sport.
I’d have to say that Lauren being a feminist (can you imagine how the Mamamia team would carry on if she said she wasn’t a feminist?), has absolutely nothing to do with her carrying the flag. I’m damn sure Nick Green simply thought that she was the most appropriate for the job and only considered her sporting achievements. That is how it should be.
Come to think of it, has any flag holderer from the past ever been unworthy?
loading...
Couldn’t agree more !
But can you imagine the hoo-ha had a male been chosen to carry the flag ? The cries of “SEXIST” would have echoed from the rooftops !
National flagbearer is neither a gender specific or feminist issue. How surprising that it has become one on MM.

I don’t understand why the remarks that have been made about Lauren Jackson being an impressive woman, or celebrating the fact that she identifies as a feminist, need to be interpreted so aggressively as representing some sort of conspiratorial feminist agenda? It really comes across as quite paranoid.
I don’t think anyone is applauding LJ’s selection on the basis of her femaleness or her feminism by commenting on these – I think they are simply acknowledging that they are part of what makes her a great role model (in addition to being a great athlete).
loading...
I see Lauren Jackson as an impressive human being who has achieved all of the success due to her because of her total commitment to what she does best.
Without doubt she is an impressive role model for everyone. The authors of the article have turned this wonderful announcement into a feminist, battle of the sexes issue.
loading...
Bradley I honestly don’t understand this. Why does acknowledging LJ’s gender or feminism ipso facto “turn the announcement into a feminist, battle of the sexes issue”?
Ok, for some reason I can’t reply to your reply below, Bradley. So I’ll post it here. Nope. I still don’t understand why acknowledging LJ’s gender or feminism is causing people to get their knickers in a knot. Guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
loading...
Could it be the lines “she’s the first woman to carry the flag in 20 years”……”and she’s a feminist” that are clouding my opinion ?
loading...
Someone please tell her make-up people to GO EASY on the eye makeup. Lauren is a beautiful woman but recent media appearances made her look like a drag queen
loading...
Was it really necessary to demean Lauren’s achievement by making a gratuitous comment about her appearance?
loading...
Lauren is an awesome athlete and role model. She’s also a patron of the rape crisis centre and does heaps of positive work in the community. Good luck Lauren!
loading...
Cate Blanchett could play Lauren Jackson’s double in a movie! Congratulations Lauren!
loading...
yes! I have been wracking my brain to work out who she looks like and it’s Cate!
loading...
How condescending is the title of the article. You would have to have lived under a rock not to have heard of Lauren Jackson before. And she didn’t grow up in Canberra, she moved to the AIS there as a teenager.
loading...
Yes – we’re very proud of Our Lauren here in Albury. Our basketball stadium was renamed The Lauren Jackson Stadium earlier this year…
loading...
I was talking to my roommates this morning and a couple of them didn’t know who Lauren Jackson was.
We’ve just got to be careful not to assume knowledge – hence the original title of the post. Lots of people know who she is, but for everyone that does there’s probably someone who doesn’t.
loading...
As a junior basketballer, I had the pleasure of meeting Lauren Jackson at a training camp, and I can safely say that I completely look up to her (not just because she’s freakishly tall) – she’s a great leader and role model, and she’s a seriously amazing basketballer – you don’t win the WNBA MVP award 3 times if you’re average. I was thrilled when this was announced this morning, and now I can’t wait for the opening ceremony. Go you Opals, and the whole Aussie team!
loading...
Lauren is a star, probably the best female basket baller in the world. Taking time off from her US club for the Olympics you can see how much they miss her https://twitter.com/seattlestorm/status/228608031875792896/photo/1/large
loading...
I love LJ but did not expect her to get it !! I thought it would be Sally Pearson or Cadel Evans for sure. Congrats to Lauren, she is a fantastic aussie and a great basketballer.
loading...
She’s very tall, so the Australian flag will be higher than everyone elses….nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyyyaaahhhh, nyah.
loading...
Neil Orange-Peel. That is just about the best name I’ve seen on the site. I tip my hat to you.
loading...
How about an article on Holley Mangold for a positive female role model. http://www.smh.com.au/olympics/news-london-2012/holley-has-own-take-on-big-issue-20120726-22vyy.html
loading...
I hope you are kidding as she advocates being obese. Not a good role model with obesity being an epidemic.
loading...
Jimmy, your kidding yourself. She would be fitter than 90% of the Aussie population. If you look at BMI pretty much every NRL player would be in the Obese range. By BMI Ian Thorpe at his fittest was 195cm and 104kg, making him overweight.
loading...
I agree with both of you – if i can. Love her confidence and her work ethic. But even when you take BMI out of it she is morbidly obese. health isnt based on just fitness, she would have joint issues, fatty deposits around vital organs etc…
loading...
I have NEVER heard of Lauren Jackson. But that probably says more about me than Lauren J. Had no idea who she was cannot recall even seeing a photo of her. BUT good on her she sounds like a wonderful role model for athletes and young kids as well. I wish her and the Australian Olympic team good luck and good days in London.
loading...
I was so excited when I woke up this morning to this news. I hadn’t even seen Lauren’s name down as a contender, but she’s the perfect, perfect choice.
loading...
How is the choice made?
loading...
It is pretty arbitrary. Nick Green probably comes up with some candidates and a favourite and has a round table with a few other managers to discuss and that it.
loading...
Okay. I was thinking in a very un-PC way that she’s a great ad for Australia being so tall and blonde and lovely!
loading...
I’m no Lauren Jackson fan… I know she is Australia’s golden girl, but years ago, before she was as well known as she is now, I saw her at the basketball and a couple of young kids approached her to say hello and she was so rude to them. I just thought she could have taken the 1 minute to say hello and make these kids day.
loading...
Its funny how every anonymous person has a story of a sportsperson / celebrity “years ago” “being so rude” to the poor little kids.
If you are going to sledge someone, use your name!
loading...
Agree!
loading...
Ok fair call… I should have put my name on it – so I will. It was my comment, I own it. I am not some internet troll, I just was putting my point across that I wasn’t that impressed with the way she handled the situation I saw (I was pretty disappointed actually, enough that it’s stuck with me for years). But good for her, she’s an awesome athlete and that’s what matters. From other comments she sounds like a decent person. I must have just seen her on an off day. Perils of being a celebrity hey.
loading...
I’ve met Lauren several times. She’s never been anything but gracious. Perhaps she was having an off moment but if people were more considerate in their timing and not swamping an athlete that has just finished pouring their all into something for 3 hours, something like this could be avoided.
loading...
I’m glad to hear she has been gracious when you have met her. Seems to be the consensus in here, I must have seen her on an off day.
loading...
Why does anyone care if a woman, man, feminist, misogynist etc… carries the flag? Let the best person who embraces the Olympic spirit and is a fine representative for Australia carry the flag. People who are happy that Lauren is a feminist are sexist themselves. It’s a worry. She’s a fine athlete, humble and a great Australian, that’s enough.
loading...
I’m just glad Natalie Cook isn’t going to be the flag bearer. How obnoxious to think that you are entitled to it. Her attitude is repulsive. Congrats to Lauren! Great athlete and humble, something Cook should learn to embrace.
loading...
Who is Natalie Cook? I have to brush up on my sports men and women. Why do you think it should not have been her selected? Still learning…
loading...
She won a gold medal in beach volleyball at the Sydney Olympics. She self proclaimed that if she was not selected to be the flag bearer then she would protest. Not unlike her as she is very crass, opinionated and over the top.
loading...
No, she said if it wasn’t *a woman*, she would protest.
loading...
Ahh you beat me to it.
loading...
Correct me if I am wrong (I can’t remember the article exactly) but I thought she was outlining that she would protest if the Olympic committee didn’t choose a woman, not necessarily Natalie herself, although she did think she would be a good choice. I’m not supporting what she said, I just think your comment isn’t correct. Lauren Jackson was a great choice though!
loading...
Lauren Jackson is most definitely an amazing athlete and incredible person – but I personally would have liked to see Anna Meares do it :-/ Good on Lauren anyway though – she seems so grateful for the honour and is definitely deserving
loading...
Lauren Jackson is an outstanding athlete and a great ambassador for Australia. I am really pleased that she has the honour to be the Australian flag bearer at the London Olympics. Thank you for the slide show and the recorded interview. Her basketball skills are breath-taking, the result of talent and years of dedication and training. Even with all of those achievements, she remains modest and grounded. Lauren has given a lot of her time to local schools in my area, encouraging and coaching kids of all ages. Although she’s a superstar, she takes time to ‘give back” to grass roots sport. I hope the Opals go all the way this time and win gold in 2012.
loading...
What a great choice for Australia!
I’m not a huge fan of my country’s (NZ) flagbearer, but my first choice (and probably most of the rest of the country) isn’t arriving in time for the ceremony! Boo!
loading...
This from a site that minimized Cadell Evans TDF win, all of a sudden you’re about supporting the sporting stars because they’re women. Sexism at its finest.
loading...
“minimized Cadell Evans TDF win”
Nice re-writing of history there. Clearly ‘minimized’ = ‘did not treat it as the second coming of the Messiah’.
loading...
Thanks for backing up my point -, celebrating a man = ‘second coming’ – that’s the major problem with this site you’re all so sexist you’re blinded by it.
loading...
** sigh** I was referring to the original incident on morning TV, when (IIRC) Karl S wanted people to stand & sing the anthem or whatever, instead of just saying, “Wow, what a great achievement, congratulations, we’re happy for him”.
loading...
Yeah, that was over the top, but everything on the Today show is. The reaction from half-decent news outlets was quite restrained given what a huge event it is.
I’m not sure people who don’t know much about cycling get how big winning the Tour de France really is. I was in Spain when Contador won in 07, and the celebrations took over the whole country for days, weeks in some areas. Whereas here it was big news for a day or two, and people weren’t out on the street parading or partying in celebration.
loading...
The MM Team wrote that Lauren jackson is a great choice to carry out flag. They didn’t call for a public holiday.
loading...
There was some talk of public holidays after Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe’s Olympic wins. It was just talk by people who had absolutely no influence and were just trying to fill in time, and it died down completely within days.
People get over-excited in the moment. If people were still campaigning for an annual Cadel Evans Day there would be an issue, but I’m not sure what’s so wrong about letting people get wrapped up in the moment for a day or two. Also whilst I understand what Mia was trying to say, talking about Cadel (‘he doesn’t live here’) rather than just telling Karl he was acting like a twit was out of line.
loading...
Oh, well that settles it for me. Given she is a feminist (yay), it is officially good news. Woo.
MM activism aside, what a great and worthy choice. I listened to het interviewed on sunrise thismorning, and she said that she has never once felt discriminated against in her entire career, and that flag barers have always been picked on merit. what a great choice.
loading...
20 years since a women held the flag. Do you really think that is fair????
Or are you just a little upset that a women has taken away a “man’s” job
loading...
As I said, she is worthy, dont make out I dispute that. My problem is mm turning it into a gender battleground issue yet again.
Ok, so the last 4 olympics it was men. Hey, who actually lit the cauldren at sydney? If you go looking for sexism, you start to convince yourself it is everywhere when it is not.
This isnt school sports or ‘pass the parcel’, it doesnt have to go ‘boy girl boy girl’ just to keep jamila happy.
loading...
How are MM turning it into a gender battleground issue?
loading...
By making it about feminism rather than purely celebrating a great female sports HERO.
loading...
By calling her a legend for being a self-described feminist?
loading...
Did you even read Wounded Bull’s comment. He clearly said she deserved it and was a great choice. How on earth do you get that he’s upset she’s taken a “man’s job” out of that?
I’m a feminist, but I really don’t think it’s helpful to make a big fuss of being a feminist or not being a feminist as relates to things like this. If she wasn’t a feminist she’d be just as deserving.
loading...
This is a website for women and we celebrate the achievement of women – and that doesn’t make the achievement of male athletes any less. ‘Nuff said.
loading...
“This is a website for women and we celebrate the achievement of women. ‘Nuff said.”
is that saying men are not welcome to comment?
loading...
“and that doesn’t make the achievement of male athletes any less. ‘Nuff said.”
Gosh that wasn`t in your comment before.
I just don`t understand why everything has to be about being a feminist or not. What ever happened to celebrating people for who they are & what they achieve.
loading...
Men are sooooo welcome to comment. And read. Which many do.
But our content is not tailored to a male audience.
loading...
It’s a website aimed at women, but as a woman I’m interested in both sexes achievements. If someone wins a huge sporting event, or becomes a CEO at a young age, or just generally makes a difference in the world, I’m interested in hearing their story, male or female, feminist or not.
Assuming women only want to hear about or celebrate other women is just wrong.
loading...
As a woman, I have the amazing ability to *gasp* read a variety of media & not expect one website to do everything at once.
loading...
No need to be so snarky.
I was simply suprised to read Lucy’s comment. Mamamia staff often comment that they cover what people are interested in. All I said was they shouldn’t assume women are only interested or primarily interested in other women and womens issues.
loading...
We hear you roar sister.
loading...
Or if they are purely eye candy they get lot of mentions.
Ryan Gosling much?
loading...
I think she’s a great choice too. Kind of soured by Natalie Cook’s thing about it needing to be a chick. I would have thought either of them would have been frontrunners for the honour anyway, regardless of their sex.
loading...
Lauren Jackson: Champion. Canberran. Feminist. Could there be a better combination?!??!
loading...
Um, yes, from a non sexist viewpoint, the best combination is whomever deserves it. Stop turning every damn topic into a platform for feminism for gods sake.
loading...
I think if someone is playing at her 4th Olympics, has achieved silver medals at each of the previous 3, and is very highly-ranked as a basketballer – she deserves it.
loading...
On that, we most certainly agree lulu
loading...
Ah wounded bull.
You and I are going to have some fun in the coming months, I suspect. I love that you disagree with me on every point!
Let’s make a deal – together we’ll eventually find something to agree on, even if it kills us.
I think Lauren is fantastic for a heap of reasons, that’s just one of them – obviously the fact she is an amazing champion is first and foremost.
I notice you aren’t having a go at me for trumpeting the fact she’s Canberran, does that make me anti-other-state-capitals? Sydneyist. Adelaidist. I’m appalled at myself
Jamila
loading...
As long as a Melburnian carries the flag at the Barista Olympics.
loading...
There are Barista Olympics, or are you pulling my leg!
loading...
Jamila, nothing personal, but there are 2 things that drive me batty, sexism and hypocrisy. Both in large doses in how you handled this story. Just calling a spade a spade jamila.
loading...
Stop turning every damn topic into a platform to attack Jamila/Mama mia and then maybe I’ll respect what you have to say, wounded bull.
loading...
I have echoed what most are saying in here, yet it is only me that is doing it for personal attack reasons?? For the record, I regularly contribute on here on many many topics, have for years, and enjoy much of the content on here. HOWEVER, I speak up when I see sexism and hypocrisy in action (as Mia and Jamila speak up time and again on issues they are passionate about), and I will continue to do that.
loading...
I hear you. Canberrans face a lot of unfair adversity.
loading...
Thanks Trog, that made this former Canberran laugh out loud!
I think Lauren Jackson is a great choice. Bravo. I’m a bit confused by the title for this story, though. I would have thought Lauren’s quite a well known athlete…
loading...
I agree – didn’t like the original title and glad they changed it. I think a lot of people do know Lauren Jackson and by ‘asking who is she?’ made it seem more about the fact she’s woman, than a inpirational sports-person wothy of the choice
loading...
What does feminism have to do with anything?
loading...
Yeah, we let her vote too Jamila.
loading...
Canberran? I thought she was from Albury?
loading...
PERFECT choice.
loading...
That’s really lovely news. I’m pretty sure that I would be happy to hear of any of our amazing athletes being grateful and proud to be awarded this honour though – male or female.
loading...
