LARA BINGLE, THE PAPARAZZO AND A CURRENT AFFAIR
It’s not quite what you think it is. Model and television personality Lara Bingle is involved in another nude photo brouhaha but it’s not because an ex-fling sent them around. She was papped while inside her own apartment. The naked photos were then bought by her own friend, celebrity paparazzo Darryn Lyons (him of the fake abs variety), and then shopped around to the tabloids and newspapers to see if anyone took the bait.
Instead, A Current Affair ran an ‘expose’ on the paparazzi tactics and aired blurred out versions of the photos. And now, to top it all off, Darryn Lyons is demanding $110,000 in payment as the pics were aired without his permission.
Huh? ACA boss Grant Williams said:
“My job is to expose grubs who think it is al right to take photos of naked women through bedroom windows, not to do business with them,” Williams said yesterday.
“Darryn is absolutely kidding himself.”
As for Bingle, she said she wasn’t sure what was going on but said she felt violated by the drama, especially considering Lyons was a friend and co-owner of a restaurant with her.
“What I understand is that he brought the photos,’’ she said.
“I called him but he never returned my calls so there must be something up.
“I don’t know whether he bought them to protect me or if he bought them to make money off me.”

Lara Bingle outside the courtroom
Here’s what else is going on:
1. Did you hear about little Avery Canahuati? She was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and didn’t have long to live. Her parents started a blog called ‘Avery’s Bucket List’ with a list of tiny accomplishments she was making in her short life. She managed to tick off things like ‘wake up with a smile’, ‘get a tattoo [a stick on one] and ‘get picked up by a fireman’. She passed away this week due to a sudden complication. Her parents are asking for donations to SMA-related research.
2. 14-year-old Julia Bluhm is a bit peeved at her favourite magazine, Seventeen, which she says is meant to be supporting its readers but is failing in that duty by running Photoshopped images in its pages. She’s brought a petition with over 24,000 signatures to the magazine’s doorstep, noting: “…girls want to be accepted, appreciated and liked. And when they don’t fit the criteria, some girls like to fix themselves. This can lead to eating disorders, dieting, depression and low self-esteem. That’s why I’m asking Seventeen Magazine to commit to printing one unaltered — real — photo spread per month. I want to see regular girls that look like me in a magazine that’s supposed to be for me.”
3. This British marriage equality ad is going viral. What do you think?
4. The Health Services Union (that one at the centre of the prostitute credit card allegations involving Labor MP Craig Thomson) is in the news again, this time because East Branch president Michael Williamson is under investigation for allegedly removing documents from the office while police were raiding it. Watch this space.
5. Facebook has unveiled a feature in the UK and the US that allows users to select an ‘organ donor’ option on their profile. No indication it will be available in Australia – yet – but it’s a pretty nifty move that raises awareness about the critical issue.
6. You could billet an asylum seeker, or more. The Australian Government will start paying registered families in the Australian Homestay Network (usually used for international students) $300* a week to take in asylum seekers due to a possible shortage in community housing. Refugee groups backed the plan saying it was better for the mental wellbeing of asylum seekers and cheaper than mandatory detention while the Opposition called it ‘desperate’.
*Early reports of the $300 per week figure were misleading. The figure is up to $300, but usually about half that.

Until the Federal Governement gets its act together in regards to privacy our homes are simply a hollow glass that is see through to the whole world. I recently came across a youtube video about privacy and the song was true but the fact remains Lara Bingle just like any citizen should have the right of privacy I sometimes ponder that the only place where we have privacy is when we go to the toilet. ACA should be fined by ACMA for breaching media ethics rules which they have updated but lack regulatory teeth.

the asylum seeker idea is a good one – just got to make sure no dodgy people take advantage of it.
everyone has the right to privacy in their own home – naked or not (I like to be naked at home). don’t think that guy is a friend myself!

“because East Branch president Michael Williamson is under investigation for allegedly removing documents from the office while police were raiding it.”
I saw that on the news & I thought, “Seriously?? They’ve known for *weeks* that the shit was hitting the fan and they wait until *now* before (allegedly) trying to destroy evidence?”

Ugh, I seriously wish Lara Bingle would crawl back under her rock. If she is completely innocent, and was snapped unawares in the nud, then that is not OK. But her agent being sent the proofs? It’s all just so manufactured and attention grabbing. I, for one, will definitely NOT be watching any show she features in.

Bingle – publicity stunt.
Ad- just beautiful!
Avery- heartbreaking
Julia Bluhm – Mia in the making!
Health Services Union- dodgy
Mamamia – highlight of my day

You – rock.
Fixed that for you, Rick.

Ha!

Beautiful ad.

ACA. Constantly blown away by their selfless motives. Noble as fuck.
loading...
as others have said, the Lara thing sounds set up.
That marriage equality ad is beautiful, absolutely beautiful!
Good on Julia Bluhm, 24000 signatures is massive!
loading...
Hasn’t Lara learned to close the blinds when she’s doing a nudie run? I smell a publicity stunt.
loading...
I missed the news last night but am so sad having just read about the mum who was killed by a bus in Sydney yesterday afternoon. The bus her 11yo child was on returning from school camp. Heartbreaking, I feel sick.
loading...
Me too, Lu. So awful. Her poor family.

Reading the piece about Seventeen magazine and the anger that the images shown within inspired in the fourteen year old got me thinking.
I was at the theatre last night to see “Annie”, as were a number of teenage girls from various school groups. They may have well been wearing nothing as the shortie skirts and loooooooooow cut tops left nothing to the imagination. Obviously they weren’t asked to sign the petition. In fact I doubt that any one would do so if asked.
loading...
I don’t understand the connection between dressing in short skirts and not wanting un-photoshopped photos in magazines. Can you elaborate? What does how someone dresses have to do with whether they think magazines should photoshop?
loading...
Sorry, I went off on a tangent…again.
As I say, the piece got me thinking. I was way off topic, but I had been thinking.
loading...
Lara Bingle just doesn’t learn does she. Sorry, no sympathy for her.
loading...
Seriously? No sympathy for someone who was photographed naked, unwillingly, in the privacy of her own home? May I ask why?
loading...
Unwilling?? I don’t believe so, more likely a set up with her friend to get some attention for her new (yawn) show.
loading...
Unwillingly? You’ve got to be joking, right? No sympathy for this desperate attention seeker from me either.
loading...
I honestly say this with complete sincerity and no cattiness whatsoever, but Lara Bingle clearly doesn’t have much going on upstairs. Unless she marries someone wealthy, once her looks go she’s stuffed. She may as well milk it for the moment.
loading...
And, as if we needed further confirmation: Darryn Lyons says he showed Bingle the photos to ‘proof’ before they were shopped around.
Hmmm.

Thanks for this Rick. Are any of us really that surprised she had known these pics existed? I really want to sit this girl down and just shake her shoulders a bit. I’m sure she’s a lovely person but someone is giving her the wrong advice about how to make a ‘career’ for herself and she seems to take it continually.
loading...
How can you list Lara Bingle as the ‘top story’ here????

Baby Avery Canahuati is listed under ‘here’s what else is going on’! WTF, that is just disrespectful.
She deserves more than that
Rest in Peace Beautiful Girl xxx

These stories aren’t ever in a particular order. They’re here because, one way or another, they are interesting. Sometimes they are really sad but provide some hope, like Avery’s story, which is why I included it.
loading...
oh god, that ad made me cry. Granted, I cry at everything. But it’s just so silly that we’re still talking about marriage equality – why hasn’t it just happened yet?
In 20 years time we’ll all be saying how stupid it was that gay marriage wasn’t allowed.
loading...
Well, the good news is Mamamia made me cry BEFORE I put my makeup on today.
loading...
Yet another great plan from the Gillard government. This will give everyone who supports their immigration free for all the chance to put their money where their mouth is. I presume Sarah Hanson-Young will be the first name on the list.
loading...
Actually, I would expect to see many of the MM team, readers and contributors putting their hands up.
Certainly some interesting and inspiring articles would follow, thus generating some lively and important discussion.
loading...
I would certainly put my hand up.
loading...
For $300 a week I’d put my hand up!
loading...
Seriously, what’s with your attitude? It’s not an “immigration free for all”: it’s dealing with the current global situation (which forces a lot of peoples to flee their homelands) in a lawful way. It’s ILLEGAL to reject Asylum Seekers and IGNORANT to suggest we can just send them back or shut the doors.
These are people who have been traumatized, who are desperate and just hopeful of a new safe life for their families.
If I had a spare room I would definitely look into it. And I will have no hesitation to do so in the future when I have got space.
They’re Asylum Seeking Refugees- not criminals. People.

Am I the only one that smells a rat with the Lara Bingle affair??
She NEEDS story-lines for her ‘reality’ show. And publicity.
What better way than for her FRIEND to buy the photos and allegedly shop them around.. it’s an invasion of privacy, so chances are no-one was going to buy them .. and even then, you can just jack up the price….
Guess we’ll find out when Bingle and the Pap either remain friends (it was a set up) or end their friendship (it was real).
loading...
Absolutely, the whole thing sounds so staged. She just happened to be walking naked in her apartment so that she is visible from the street and someone just happened to walk by and take photos. Yeah ok.
loading...
Memo Lara Bingle, re Darren Lyons: If you lie down with dogs, you are likely to get up with fleas.
loading...
I love the idea of asylum seeker homestay. I’ve thought for years that this would be a better option than mandatory detention; it’s cheaper, it’s not degrading to the asylum seekers, families can stay together (if the homestay host has room!) and the asylum seekers can become part of the community. How is this “desperate”?
loading...
Hope you’ve put your hand up.
loading...
If it goes ahead, yes I will. But I live in the country, and for some reason community detention advocates tend to say that asylum seekers should stay in metro areas.
loading...
It will go ahead, people who are interested need to be members of the homestay network. Not an expert but I”m pretty sure it’s thought better for them to be in metro areas as they don’t have licenses/cars, there might be a shortage of services and other people who speak their language in rural areas, and so on. But I bet your home would be a great place to stay and I reckon if you’re up for it you should look into it.
I’m not surprised that not everyone wants to but I am really surprised that people care if others want to! Why object to someone else taking in an asylum seeker when it’s totally their choice?
loading...
ROFL at ACA taking the moral high ground.
loading...
yes!
Williams’ statement made me snort my tea this morning.
loading...
Lara Bingle isn’t newsworthy really, when I saw that on the news it had it as ‘breaking news’, as if some bimbo walking around in front of uncovered windows visible from the street is even news.
loading...
What makes Lara a bimbo? She has an eyewear range, a book deal, a reality TV show about to be aired on national TV and a successful modeling career – sounds like a business woman to me, not a bimbo.
loading...
and the reason she has all of these things is because she used her looks to become a model not her brain so I don’t think you need to paint her out to be some sort of amazing business woman, she wouldn’t be where she was if she was ordinary looking. I agree what a set up, she loves the attention and playing the victim and she is sooooo boring.
loading...
I think she’s become famous for being vaguely famous – mainly for uttering the word “bloody” on a tourist ad. I doubt she would have got any of these deals without that 15 minutes. And any idiot knows you close the curtains before you disrobe, so she shouldn’t be ‘surprised’.
And Jay, I reckon she is pretty ordinary looking, her efforts to pose sexily fail dismally. I find the whole hoo-ha around her really annoying.
loading...
Avery… :’(
loading...
Yawn Lara Bingle. What a coincidence that she has a new TV show coming out. Ordinarily this sort of thing deserves outrage, but I think it is not unreasonable to be a bit sceptical here…
loading...
On one hand you have someone like Darren Lyons who thinks it’s ok to take photos of someone IN THEIR OWN HOME and then demand $$$ for the photos and then you have people like little Avery’s parents doing extraordinary things to raise money and awareness for a disease whilst facing their own personal tragedy. I know it takes all types in this world but what a contrast of values.
loading...
It was only a few nights ago that I found myself overcome with tears as I read little Avery’s blog. Like most people I had never heard of SMA and was amazed by her parents courage to try and raise awareness of it so that some good could come from their and their daughters suffering. My heart now breaks again reading that brave little Avery has passed. What an amazing family. Makes Lara Bingle’s frequent dramas very much pale in comparison. Hug and cherish your children.

LOVE that marriage equality ad. It’s so sweet.
I had never heard of Avery Canahuati but I just looked back over the last few posts on her blog and ended up in tears. Rest in peace, little one.

I love that ad.
Last weekend, two ladies I know vaguely got engaged. There is a video up on facebook, I’ll see if I can link to it. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen two people more in love, it’s beautiful.

Gosh, that one really had me in tears.
Best use of the ‘thumbs up’ ever.
So much joy in their faces.
Thanks, I needed that today.

Oh thank god everyone else is in a meeting because I’m crying in my office. That was so beautiful. Love like that should be recognised in every way.

Oh, that is the most divine thing I’ve seen in ages. It got me all teary.
So much more powerful than the ad because it’s real.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THAT!!
One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen

oh that’s beautiful!

I knew I should’ve read the replies to this before watching the video. Might’ve prepared me for the tears. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you detachableprincess.

Awwww they’re beautiful! They look so in love.I love proposal videos!

Go Julia Bluhm! It is a pity all magazines won’t print 1 x untouched shoot per magazine. Here is hoping Seventeen are the first. The teen years are so fragile and impressionable and photoshopped images portray unachievable & unrealistic beauty.
loading...
the majority of shots in Dolly magazine are all photoshop free, they have little symbols on the images. A majority of the fashion shoots are on real girls (readers and non models who write in and want to be in the mag) and then there are some model shots as well, but basically everything that was shot by the dolly team is photoshop free, airbrush free etc. All the other images like the cover etc are bought and therefore already photoshopped. I am pretty sure Girlfriend has something similar but dont know the details. It’s not asking a lot of Seventeen and I think they should pull their finger out and take notice.

What a fantastic, movitated young woman!
