It's officially the best time of year for sweet, sweet lovin'.

The Christmas holiday period is the most popular time of the year to fall pregnant, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

“What we’ve found looking at the last decade’s worth of data is that late September-early October is the peak time in terms of the number of people born in Australia,” says ABS demographer Andrew Howe.

“Nine months before equates to around Christmas time.”

It doesn’t matter where you live – it’s a nation-wide trend.

“The rate of births can vary a bit across the country but in terms of distribution across the year, it’s [the figures are] pretty consistent across the country,” said Mr Howe.

Aussie births average at around 830 per day around late September and it trails off in October.

“We’ve found December is actually the lowest month in terms of average birth. It’s around 760 births per day in December,” Mr Howe added.

There is a similar pattern overseas, making it peak baby making time in the UK and New Zealand too.

Fertility specialist, Dr Sonya Jessop, says it's because we have more time for sex.

"Suddenly around Christmas time things are shut and everyone is at home and people get together more and have more sex and therefore have more babies," she says.

The Sydneysider says the holiday period is a time when people may decide to "give it a go" and try for a baby.

"Christmas time is one of those times where people let their guard down a bit and everything seems a bit nicer," she says.

It is also a time of year when people can let go of the stresses of work.

"They’re at home and instead of falling asleep exhausted, they have time."

The IVF specialist says timing is a big issue for people struggling to conceive.

"It’s timing these days, people aren’t having sex at the right time or frequently enough.  My top fertility tip is to have more sex."

But Australians have been getting busy with it, with birth rates peaking in the past year.

"In the 2015-2016 financial year, 315,000 births was a record number for Australia," says Mr Howe.
