After two months of blind auditions, battle rounds, live rounds, countless tweets and varying shades of Seal’s nail polish, here’s the news we’ve all been waiting for.

It came down to a final four. It was Darren Percival (Team Keith), Sarah de Bono (Team Joel), Rachael Leahcar (Team Delta) and Karise Eden (Team Seal).

The winner of The Voice is…..

KARISE!!!

Karise is only 19-years-old and she’s never had a singing lesson in her life.

After Karise won, Mia tweeted:

Screen shot 2012 06 18 at 9.17.21 PM The Voice GRAND FINAL. And the winner is...

Last night she sang an original called “I Was Your Girl” and Ruby Turner’s “Stay With Me Baby”.

In SECOND PLACE: Darren Percival (Team Keith) 40-year-old Darren has never had a day job and has made his living from performing and doing back-up vocals. over the past 22 years. Last night he sand his original song called “Damage Down” and Stevie Wonder’s “For Once In My Life”.

In THIRD PLACE: Rachael Leahcar (Team Delta) Rachael is 90% legally blind. Last night she sang Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” and her original song (dedicated to Delta) called “Shooting Star”.

In FOURTH PLACE: Sarah de Bono (Team Joel) Sarah is also 19-years-old. Last night she spoke about how she was bullied as a teenager and how her experienced were the motivation writing her song “Beautiful” which she performed last night. She also sang Tina Arena’s “If I Didn’t Love You”.

Karise and Darren

Did you pick it? Who was your favourite artist throughout the season? What have your best moments been – Keith’s Calvin Kleins? Team Seal singing Kissed from a Rose? Lakyn Hepri anything? Tell us about it….

Great series, and just finished reading the other recap, very funny – so if you havent check that out, do so. I was stunned that Sarah came 4th, clearly that wasn’t right. But maybe we didn’t get behind her because of the twitterverse rumers that were floating around all week, that the powerhouse team of joel/ritchie etc. was twittering everyone they knew, and asking them to vote via facebook (which was free), maybe didn’t happen. Anyways. Rachel 3rd, lovely girl, shame about her mentor, i have tried through this whole series, but, no, just cant like delta. Song choice (and its only my opinion here ladies/gents), was completely selected to showcase Delta’s voice/range not Rachels. And surprize, surprize, announcement of Delta’s upcoming tour, where no doubt she will crank that song out. Her choice of outfit, was lets face it, old fashioned, creepy and resembled a gold logie. She’s statuesque anyways, lets not highlight the fact beside a petite partner. Joel and Sarah’s duet was great, as was Seal and Karise, Keith and Darren, simply gold. All other 3 judges allowed their competitors to have their moment in the spotlight. Delta completely stole it. I hope they replace her next series, they will do well to do so. Maybe Ricky Lee? or someone else. I also read below comparisons between Casey Donovan and Karise………no comparison, Karise sings like she’s reincarnated from another world. She is so tallented, if she didn’t win the show was rigged. She needs to get herself a solid manager and agent now, with her best interests at heart. And i cant help thinking Seal will also take her under his wing. He seems lovely. What a great show, cant wait for season two.

I am thrilled that Karise won. I think she is possibly the best raw talent Australia has uncovered in a talent tv show, and it looks like a lot of other people feel the same. Just look at the itunes chart!

The test here will be how Universal music manages her creatively, not whether or not Australia will get behind her – as far as I am concerned, they already have. I also don’t think the Casey Donovan comparisons are fair, they are very different stylistically and we need to remember that it was Sony BMG who dropped Casey for not being marketable enough and for writing songs that weren’t commercial enough. She was unearthed on a show that thought ridiculous themes and encouraging “versatility” was a good approach.

I would like to think that the fact that The Voice mentored talent in its natural form without heaping criticism on contestants and without stupid stupid themes like disco night, reflects Universal’s approach to managing the winner. If they don’t mess with Karise, the sky is the limit because we already know she has more soul than a sneaker shop :)

The Voice was just like every other singing show that came before it. It made a slight change on the audition process and went for a positive vibe. Once the live shows started it was Idol all over again. It was hardly about the voice, just another show about the personality, image and ‘narrative’ of the contestant. I like signing shows, the Voice was fun, what I am over is people pretending it was something revolutionary or different. We got the same result we get from shows like Idol, X-factor and Australia’s Got Talent.

Karise reminds me of Casey Donovan. People get behind these non-mainstream looking girls with some sort of difficulty highlighted in their life story (Karise and her upbringing, Casey and self-acceptance) then they fail to support them beyond the show.

I am not putting Karise down, there is nothing wrong with her image or life, I just see parallels between her and Casey and I hope her album is more successful.

I’m sorry but i completely disagree with your comparison. They are not alike at all besides being female, Karise had a raw talent that Casey could never aquire although she could sing, there is no comparison in the level of talent.
I wanted Sarah to sing but i have to agree after listening to Karise sing last night I can see how and why she won.

For me, Diana was the best hands down. Don’t know what Keith was thinking not taking her through. Perhaps he felt he should put throuh a bloke (as the other 3 coaches had already chosen a female?)

I absolutely love the voice and spirit of Karise Eden. From the beginning I have been a fan of hers. I also like Diana who has since been voted off. Darren I think is also a terrific singer with an openness about him. Sarah is very talented, and I believe appeals to the younger crowd and will sell loads of records. Rachael has a beautiful old style voice, but I haven’t seen any diversity in her. I find Delta’s interactions with her to be a bit like she feels sorry for her. So from this 38 year old, it is a win to Karise (who to me is quite like Joss Stone). Go Karise!

My vote goes for Karise.. Sarah was my favourite until the original songs. I found Sarah’s original to be very literal, like spelling out the steps to overcome bullying – you could really tell it was written by a 16year old, with a little tweeking it could be a lot better. As for Rachael writing a song to Delta, did this make anyone else want to vomit??? “You are brighter than the sun” “You give me a plan and i’ll do the best I can”…. ohh please honey, Delta is getting paid to give you advice. I also feel like every week she is singing the same thing.. she is young, why hasn’t her youth been shown in her performances? She has become a mini boring delta. Snooze factor.

Sarah is absolutely boring in my eyes! I’m over the power ballads. If she wasn’t constantly dressed in bright colours to match her fluorescent hair, there is no way I would remember her.

Karise doesn’t grab me much either. I loathed her rendition of ‘Hallelujah’ and whilst her cover of ‘Stay With Me Baby’ was power, it does not compare to the talents who have sung it before.

I’m not a fan of Rachael but her cover of ‘Smile’ was simply stunning. She is like a mini Liza Minelli!

Darren is pretty cool, funky and consistently good.

Just a thought re all the Delta hating that ignites Twitter each night… why is it she gets flak for making it all about her when Seal is even better at bringing it back to him and his career in almost every comment he makes?

Meanwhile I see all this nasty commentary every day regarding Delta’s wardrobe and hair but no-one seems to notice that Keith Urban is wearing almost as much make-up as her. And I’d hazard a guess he spends more time with the hair straightener than she does.

For what it’s worth I love the show and I think all four judges have been great. Just a bit taken aback at the double standards that Delta has faced compared with the guys

I’ve actually been in Delta’s corner for most of the show. But I think last night she showed poor judgment in the continual “poor little girl” persona of Rachael. She deserves a lot more than that tag. Plus, as you will see from my comment below, Delta failed to pick up on the (dare I say it) blatant ripoff of the Bryan Adam’s song for Rachael’s “original” song. I couldn’t give a shit about what Delta wears, her hair extensions or her tan. These are the problems I had with her last night.

      • Sally

Yes I agree with you re her mentoring performance last night. Although, again, I would argue all four coaches have failed in some ways re getting the very best out of their team – with the possible exception of Seal.

I certainly respect your kind of legit criticism of Delta and I’m certainly not suggesting she has been without some serious faults this series. But the truth is most of the bitchiness about her online and so on has been about irrelevant stuff life the fake tan and the hair extensions and yet Keith’s pretty obvious vanity is overlooked. It’s been nasty and sexist in my view

It’s funny cause I kind of wish that Delta kept Glen Cunningham over Rachael. I actually thought she was doing a pretty good job with him. But then she would have gotten slack over that as well. Delta can’t win at the moment it seems! I’m a bit of a Darren fan, I have to admit, but Keith doesn’t do a lot for me. He’s a little bit too girly for me ;) – not sure if vain, but just a little too pretty for my taste. Anyways…….guess we will see tonight :) Not sure what I’m going to watch after tonight!

I feel like Rachael is being exploited some how. It makes me really nervous. The judges are right in saying she is talented, works hard and is a professional in terms of willpower and resilience, but her position in the final doesn’t sit right with me.

Her styling, the song choice, the wardrobe is sending a vibe of ‘helpless angel’. I wish they would let her perform like a strong, sassy, sexy, real person and not keep on subtly alluding to her disability all the time.

I feel sorry for her because in comparison to the others I don’t think she can really compete. Too much hype and speculation, and labelling as the ‘token deaf girl’.

Do you mean “token blind girl”, Megs?
Here in SA we are being saturated with Rachael publicity, including her being front page of the Adelaide Advertiser the day after each performance, three-page spreads about her life story, photos with her family & Nonna … it goes on and on! Today’s newspaper heading was “SA rallies behind Rachael” which pretty much says “vote for her as she has no hope of winning”! I am not going to vote for her purely because she is South Australian; I would be voting because she has the best voice and, apart from a glimpse of that in the blind auditions, I do not think she has the best voice out of the finalists (or out of most of the Top 24 IMO). This is one disadvantage of the contestants being voted on as a performer for each team instead of in their own right, otherwise there would be different singers in this final!

I’ve learned so much from this show though – who knew Keith was such a great guy despite overuse of the word “swagger”, that Seal is such an eccentric and dresses in the dark, that Joel single handedly keeps the hair dye business affloat. I’ve had fun, and I’ve been entertained!

Love your comment. I think delta keeps the spangly clothing and accessory business afloat too. The cliches really came rolling out last night, enough to make you groan, but I have enjoyed this series when I rarely watch reality tv. I do wish I hadn’t grown up with so much music in my life, because it makes you a bit picky.

Karise was amazing last night. I felt the others weren’t a patch on her. (I didn’t like her rendition of Hallelujah last week though.)

Still smarting over Diana Rouvas not making it. Would have loved to see a Diana-Karise showdown!

If Sarah didn’t have fluorescent hair I don’t think I would even remember her. Not trying to be offensive at all, I just don’t feel anything when I watch/listen to her sing and I forget what she sang as soon as it’s over.

Darren is just beautiful, and I hope he gets a good kick to his career from this. A truly beautiful soul.

Young Rachael is a good singer but not a great singer and I think she is only there because of her disability.

On the whole I thought last night was pretty disappointing (Karise aside) Not their best performances or even good song choices (for the non-originals). It rated it’s socks off though, so the PTB must be happy with that.

Yes, what is it with her choice of hair colour? Every time I look at her, all I can think is “why?”. I think she’d be very pretty if she had a more natural hair colour. That’s my opinion, anyway!

Karise for the win she is absolutely amazing although I believe Joel and Nicole Richie have a twitter campaign going for Sarah and Sarah herself definitely chasing the votes on twitter

I must say I missed Em’s live tweets during the show though

love karise’s uniqueness and she gets my vote by miles…
rachel’s voice just doesn’t do it for me ( i know she can sing, just not my cup of tea at all), also think that she should have been given different styles of songs and look a bit more confident on stage, i always get the impression that she is scared and shaky up there (mind you, i’d be too, reason why i didn’t audition, oh and the fact that i cant even sing lullabies counted as well…)
darren is a beautiful singer and my grandma is voting for him…
sarah is amazing and very “marketable” but i feel that we have so many “sarahs” out there and i can see her concerts with half naked back -up dancers lifing her up on stage, just don’t want to vote for that…

Oh wow! Such divided opinions! I think Karise could be developed into a great singer, but right now she is a scratchy yeller. Loud and screechy doesn’t =singing. Sone vouce coaching is what is needed here. Sorry!
I don’t think Sarah has enough personality to carry a great career. Song choices haven’t done her any favours either.
Rachel is beautiful and is indeed an old soul. She will have a career (as they all will) but not as the winner of the voice.
Darren has an amazing voice but has been forced into yelling at times also and not being himself. I think he should be singing more mellow songs.
It will be interesting tonight. Who does most of the voting? If it’s teenagers it’s going to be Karise or Sarah. I hope it’s Darren – but that’s just my opinion. Best of luck to all of them.

Love Karise’s voice but more than that, her stage presence. As soon as she is off stage she turns back into a normal 19 year old, but on stage that intensity is magnetic. Interesting that Seal, the most pretentious of the judges and to my mind the weakest (along with Delta), chose the best voice/performer. Maybe there is more to him than appears. Also love Sarah for her rock chick look, great voice and overall sassy, beautiful, star persona. But Karise leaves em all for dead when it comes to giving a spine tingling performance. If justice is served, she will win.

Actually, it was Karise who chose Seal, not the other way round, as all of the judges turned around for Karise.
In the blind auditions, Seal got pretty much all of the singers he turned around for; he was without doubt the most in-demand judge, so he got the pick of the bunch, unlike poor Delta, who tended to be ignored by the contestants, if one of the other judges had turned around…

I got the impression that contestants wanted the ‘international celebrities’, as opposed to the local ones. I think Delta has a fantastic voice – she truly deserves her success – but like Celine Dion, people tend to love her or loathe her.
I love Seal’s music, but I find The Voice has put me off him a bit as he’s so sleazy.

  42. Hello

All 4 voices were tired & over sung. :( Someone – maybe in production? is letting/making these singers over-rehearse. It’s obvious to any singer/voice teacher (yes I am one). Hope they let these poor voices rest before finale as it’s very unfair to the singers. They are being judged by millions!

I may sound crazy here and at the risk of getting criticized, but everyone seems to love Karise and she is a very talented 19 year old, but her voice does not really appeal to me. I just find it slightly scratchy and I am personally not a huge fan of her. I am definitely not saying she is a bad singer, just not personnally appealing to myself.

Sarah is definitely the most “marketable” of the finalists, I think.. I can see her doing a few pop-ish chart topping songs after The Voice ends.

I hope all artists retain their indiviuality, regardless of my personal appeal of course. There is nothing worse in the singing industry when artists appear to lose their uniquness and fall into sounding the same as everyone else, and only singing music which will get them money and ratings rather than what means the most to them and showing their actual talent.

Her voice doesn’t appeal to me either. I do think she’s extremely talented but just not the type of voice I choose to listen to. I’d be happy to see her win though.

LIKE this comment x 100! I didn’t know the words I was looking for to describe this, but schmaltzy victim songs is perfect! And the cutesy baby doll outfits are too much as well! I think it’s all part of Delta’s strategy – these songs may gain Rachael some additional sympathy votes from the bleeding hearts out there. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but one of Rachel’s original quotes way back was, “I don’t want to be known as the blind girl who sings – I want to be known as the singer who just happens to be blind.” Delta, were you listening at all at that point? Her entire presentation on this show has been based on the “blind singer” model – which I find a shame.

I also find Delta’s overall attitude to Rachael to be patronising and overly maternal, to the extent that I get angry and irritated by the way she talks to Rachael. I’m not cheering Rachael for the win (go Karise!), but IMHO she is a very good singer whose talent has been mishandled in this competition – and I think her future may suffer based on her portrayal in this show. I hope it doesn’t.

I agree. I liked her a lot at the beginning, now she’s getting annoying because it is all “oh she is such a cutesy poo, my little shooting star!” Oh, please! Someone hand Delta a tissue so she can wipe up all that dribble.

Couldnt agree more not once has Rachael been pushed outside her comfort zone where as the others have. Delta had a weak team and it annoys me that stronger and more commanding singers on other teams were eliminated as they were competing on a different playing field within their own teams. It was obvious from the get go that Rachael would be in the final for Deltas team, sympathy vote and all.

I love the Australian version of the voice far more than the US one. I love that the artists got to sing their own songs. I think that Darren, Sarah and Karise are all brilliant but I just don’t get why Rachael made it through. My very un – PC partner reckons it is cos she is blind and Dlta would be crucified if she got rid of her.

I love that this is the first time I have watched a singing show and though ‘I would by their album’, and i would definitely buy Karise or darrens.

But mostly, I love Keith :) Have done for years and now I get to see so much mor eof him…..

I disagree! His original song “Damage Down” was excellent; it reminded me of something Billy Joel would sing – and in a voice that’s as good as his too. Of course whether people agree totally depends on whether you like Billy Joel or not LOL! I can see him having a niche market out there if he did record a CD.
The weakest last night, and for many weeks now, was Rachael.

Just a bit over his prayer hands…and he will alienate the female market if he doesnt stop harping on about his wife. Women like to listen to me singing and imagine they’re singing to them!
