Robyn Lawley has been signed for Ralph Lauren as their first plus-size model. She’s also been Australian Vogue‘s first “plus-size” covergirl, and the face – and body – of Boux Avenue, a British lingerie line.
But – as Hurricane Vanessa says:
Hang on.
Excuse me.
SIZE 12?
Plus size?
How?
How can, if the average size of an US and UK woman is a UK Size 16, how can I size 12 be PLUS?
Based on my not very good maths, I would say that Robyn, like anyone under the (inter) national average (of developed countries for e.g.) would logically, be a minus size.
But then I am not very good at maths.
Or fashion.
Here’s an entire gallery of the very gorgeous Robyn:

Paris Hilton, who is known for the odd slip of the tongue, seems to have outdone herself this time. The socialite has been caught on tape calling gay men “disgusting” and suggesting they “probably have AIDS.”
Celebrity website RadarOnline obtained the audio from a taxi ride Hilton took when she was in New York earlier this month for fashion week. Paris was talking to her friend, an openly gay male model, about the smartphone app Grindr, and the taxi driver recorded the conversation.
Her friend said: ”Say I log into Grindr, someone that’s on Grindr can be in that building and it tells you all the locations of where they are and you can be like ‘Yo, you wanna f**k?’ and he might be on like, the sixth floor.”
Paris then said: “Ewww. Ewww. To get f**ked? Gay guys are the horniest people in the world. They’re disgusting. Dude, most of them probably have AIDS.”
She then went on to say she would be “scared” if she was a gay man. ”You’ll like, die of AIDS.”
A spokesman for Hilton defended the comments saying they were taken out of context and that she is a “huge supporter of the gay community.”
Yep. We can tell.

X Factor contestant gets booted from the show. Another day, another nude photo scandal – Josh Brookes has been sacked from the reality show for breaching social media rules – media reports suggest that he tried to solicit nude photos from some of his 24,000 followers during an unauthorised Twitcam chat this week.
The Seven Network released a statement saying that Brookes – one of the 11 remaining contestants – was being sent home to Perth as he “behaved in an inappropriate manner”.
And in other news – Heidi Klum is taking a leaf out of Kate Middleton’s topless-shots-and-lawsuits book. Click here to read more.

Hey, you forgot the Two Coreys!
Had a massive crush on Corey Haim, especially after The Lost Boys.

If the average model is size 6 (Aus) and Robyn is size 12 then yes, she is plus size. She is actually plus 6 sizes (or plus 3 sizes depending on how you count it).
I don’t think the ‘plus’ has anything to do with average women. It is more a comparison to the average model.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned because I don’t have time to read all the comments, but they are referring to American size 12, which is our 16. It’s in reference to her new contract with Ralph Lauren, modelling their US size 12 stuff.

Robyn Lawley is incredibly beautiful and attractive.
But just a note to Hurricane Vanessa- just because the AVERAGE size of today’s woman in western countries is a size 16, does not mean that plus size or underweight should be measured over or under that.
Not meaning to sound rude or offensive, but size 16 is plus size, according to BMI standards.
Anyway, as I said, I think she’s super hot and would love to see more plus size women in fashion ads.

What a babe – and she’s an Aussie size 12, not 16!

She isnt even close to being plus size! plus size, correct me if im wrong is a girl who wears plus sizes (from 16 onwards) and she sure as bleep doesnt wear a size 16. And when i look at her i see a person who isnt thin to the bone, but is far from being fat!
loading...
she IS plus size. She just happens to be about 6 foot 1.

Robyn Lawley’s measurements are an Australian 16 – she seems smaller in photos because she is 6 foot 2 (1.88m) tall!
An Australian 16 is a US 12.
There is much confusion amongst the people!

I don’t get the angst about what her measurements etc make her. I always find it amusing when these posts appear with people arguing about what is plus size and stuff. Considering the angst about clothing sizes in general, I think it’s just pushing shit uphill arguing about it.
To the modelling world, she’s probably “plus size” because she has boobs and hips that you can actually see.
In the real world? Probably not so much “plus size”. I always took plus size to mean that you need to go to the special plus size section because you’re obese. Sizing is so arbitrary I don’t think there’s much point arguing about it!
loading...
But it’s the measurements that make the size! It really doesn’t matter what she weighs or what her BMI is, if her waist actually is 78cm she’ll probably need a size 16 in Australia (and a size 12 in the US). If she wanted to sew herself a skirt she’d need to use a size 18 pattern!
My main reason for always making a comment like this on articles like this is that there is often several messages which say (and this article says it too) that she couldn’t possibly be size 16 or plus size because she doesn’t look fat. I really do find this annoying! That’s why I usually point out that her measurements are actually larger than it would seem, because she is so tall.
I’m guessing by your comment on “the special plus size section” that you’ve never actually shopped in one? Plus size departments & stores in Australia usually start at a size which equates to Robyn Lawley’s measurements (usually about the same as regular 16-18 clothes) – not what most people think of when they imagine “obese”.
For the record I think Robyn Lawley is absolutely gorgeous & I hope she takes the world by storm

You’re guessing wrong there, sharoncello. I’m 93kg at the moment, and 172cm. BUT – I still wear size 16 jeans, and don’t need to go into the plus size section for clothes, or shops like City Chic. Because plus size clothes are designed for shorter fat girls, not taller ones. Plus size small clothes hang like sacks on me (even when I was pregnant) because I am tall with big boobs and hips, but I am not a plus size shape. A friend worked at City Chic, and talked me into going in there – the size XS tight tops (like camis) fit me (minimum 16D boobs) but the pants look like I got a sack and tied it up around my waist. The dresses look like the same reversed.
I’m (just) obese according to the BMI – but I’ve been working hard to lose weight and while the scales aren’t on fire, my measurements are coming down. I’m not in plus sizes though. I’m in the regular section for clothes. That is the distinction I’m making – I think this model would fit in the same clothes (probably smaller going by measurements) as me – but would likely have to take in stuff from City Chic or Be Me or whatever plus size shop because they’re just not designed for boobs waist hips – they’re designed for apple shapes.

When I wrote it I knew I’d be wrong – sorry
Not all plus size clothes are made for apples though – Robyn Lawley was a model for City Chic until recently.

Robyn’s BMI would probably put her close to the overweight category. She is plus size. Just because the average size in Australia and the USA is overweight doesn’t mean it’s healthy or normal. No one should aspire to be overweight (nor should should they aspire to underweight for that matter).

Robyn is a stunning looking, white, light haired, slim, curvaceous woman with amazing bone structure and flawless looking skin. As far as I’m concerned, whether she is a couple of sizes bigger than the average model doesn’t matter. We are still being sold an unattainable standard of what is considered beautiful and desirable.
loading...
With respect, I think you are waiting for something to happen that never will. We are never going to see models that aren’t beautiful or that are obese and look frumpy and shapeless in clothes. Models are more conventionally attractive and interesting looking than the average person because that is what sells clothes. People buy clothes when they see them look good on someone else. A lot of market research goes into determining the best marketing strategies for fashion, it is not something that is done just because. I think people need to stop looking at models as being something they are supposed to aspire to be like and take responsibility for how they feel about themselves, because waiting for designers and magazines to use very overweight or plain models just so we can feel better is pointless. It will never happen. There I said it, and I am sure I will attract some criticism for it too.

Hurricane Vanessa, you are confused. Robyn is a size 16 in AUSTRALIA however in the US, due to different sizing, she is a size 12.
In AUSTRALIA a size 16 is considered plus size. In the USA a size 12 is considered plus size. They are both the SAME size, just different numbers due to different countries.

Um… I read on Wikipedia her measurements are 99-78-104. As someone who’s currently an Australian size 16, and has been an Australian size 12 (and is currently on a weight loss program hoping to get back there…) I can safely tell you, those measurements are consistent with an Australian size 12, not an Australian size 16.
Granted, I’m like, 7 inches shorter than Robyn (I’m 5’7″ or 175cm), but I was around about the same measurements when I was size 12.
I think Robyn is gorgeous. And it’s good to see a more “average” (well, closer to average) sized model being used. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the body shape of the currently fashionable tiny models (as long as they’re healthy) but I think there needs to be a far broader representation of sizes. Using Robyn is a step in the right direction.
But she’s still VERY tall, with perfect features and great skin. So she’s still very much a model, even if a bigger one.

The sizing is weird anyway as I am a size 12 and my measurements are 94-68-95 go figure!!
I agree Robyn is gorgeous and a step in the right direction

“but I think there needs to be a far broader representation of sizes. Using Robyn is a step in the right direction.” Your comments here are spot on Renae. We should be embracing that companies are starting to use a larger representation of sizes. Small steps are better than nothing!

I was thinking the same think. US sizers are smaller the aussie sizes – I certainly know I’m not a size 4 in australian clothes (!) but I am in the US! So she couldn’t be a bigger US size than Aus size, that’s not how they work. Either way, she looks incredible.
loading...
In the US a size 0 is equivalent to a AU 4, a US2 is a AU 6, and a US4 is an AU 10 (roughly) and so on. We just have a difference sizing system is all. Makes buying online a nightmare!

Look I think we can all agree that we dont think 12 is plus sized. In the fashion world however it is. I dont agree with that notion but just th way itis right now.

It sounds like Paris Hilton was commenting on the app where people meet up for sex saying “those people probably have AIDs” as in those people that use the app because if you are using the app and going along to fuck someone simply because they are in the same building as you then yes she’s making a comment and an assumption that people willing to fuck someone based on the convenience of their location MAY be less likely to practice safe sex! I can imagine loads of people making comments like that. Imagine the worst, most racist or homophobic or sexist thing you’ve ever said being filmed and released without your knowledge? Everyone says inappropriate things in moments of anger or thoughtlessness.

You don’t happen to be Kathy Hilton by any chance? I can’t believe anyone could possibly defend her in this instance.
“Imagine the worst, most racist or homophobic or sexist thing you’ve ever said being filmed and released without your knowledge? Everyone says inappropriate things in moments of anger or thoughtlessness.”
Please speak for yourself, I don’t ever say racist, homophobic or sexist things because I don’t think them. It’s very simple.

she was having a PRIVATE conversation and i reckon the taxi driver thought he would record them and release it to make a bit of money. she was talking to a gay friend, so clearly shes not homophobic. she was saying that those who use the app and meet up for sex probably have aids- would you not agree that people who have regular unprotected sex with strangers are at a higher risk of catching it? especially since 80% of aids is from MSM. i actually reckon though she was just saying it in jest to her mate. even so who cares what her private opinions are? shes entitled to them. sorry for the long post but this sort of sensationalism really annoys me.

Gahh can I just remind everyone that you don’t ‘catch aids’. You contract HIV which later develops into AIDS
