Were you one of the 2.518 million people watching The Voice last night? Or the 2.69 million people watching on Sunday night? Ratings just keep going up and up for the new show – it clocked up 2.1 million viewers on last week’s Sunday night debut, 2.54 million on Monday night and 2.37 million on Tuesday night.

Karise and Darren
It’s all we’ve been talking about in the office. With that in mind we’ve decided to summarise the main talking points so you can get involved in the conversation too.
1. Mahalia Barnes.
It didn’t take long for all four judges to turn their chairs when Mahalia Barnes took to the stage. She’s Jimmy Barnes’ daughter (and David Campbell’s sister) and she had the judges dancing in their chairs with her rendition of Proud Mary. There’s no doubt she’s extraordinary, but there’s been a bit of debate over whether she has an unfair advantage given her previous experience and, well, genetics.
What did you think?
2.Judges with wives named Nicole.
Tracey Grimshaw tweeted this last night and we thought she was spot on.
3. The mother/daughter duo.
“Are you mental?” was the question put the the judges from one contestant – Shauna Jensen – when they failed to press their buttons and turn around first for her daughter, and then for her. “I think you all made a big mistake,” she said. Shauna and her daughter Rebekah decided not to perform together, and instead tried their luck as individuals.
Seal responded: “You have to make me a believer or I cannot connect with that star quality.”
4. Seal’s dance moves.
We’d seen the bright yellow nail polish and last night we learnt Seal also has a preference for red boots. The red boots came out dancing when 20-year-old Emma Louise performed Duffy’s Mercy. Seal got out of his red chair and took his red boots to the stage and danced with the Emma as her mum and Nanna looked on from behind the scenes.
How she kept on singing, we’re still trying to understand. Props to her.
5. The judges.
While everyone’s loving Joel Madden, falling for Keith Urban and offering to give away their first born to be taken into Seal’s hands, there’s one judge that’s not generating such love. I don’t want to dwell on what being said about the woman who was formally known as ‘Australia’s sweetheart,’ but there’s been a lot of vitriol on the internet this week, which I find disappointing.
What’s with the nasty? The Voice is such an uplifting show, why do we always have to find something/someone to put down?
6. The tweets.
If you’ve been looking for a reason to get on twitter, can I suggest now? These reality shows are even better when taken with a dose of social media. Whether you tweet yourself, or just follow the people that do, it’s a great way to get involved with the show – short of being in the audience (which FYI is near impossible… we’ve tried.)
Here are some of the tweets that have got our attention during the past few episodes.

Note: This post is not sponsored by Channel Nine or The Voice (or Delta Goodrem for that matter.) Nope. Like you, we just really enjoy watching the show.

Pingback: How the failing ‘Love Delta’ campaign could improve through smarter use of social media
My husband and I are both loving the voice and he never usually watches TV! Delta is adorable, just maybe struggled with her sales pitch! The poor girl is up against massive superstars in each of their genres. She had it tough and did her best and quite frankly I think got one of the better teams. Give it your best shot Delta!

My girlfriend and I are lesbians but both of us have a huge man-crush on Keith Urban!
(And Seal makes us feel icky. He comes across as kinda slimy and fake.)
loading...
Love, love, love it!
I loved Joel from day 1 but was not a fan of the other 3. I thought Delta was far too perfect, Seal up himself and Keith was a bit plastic but I now love them all! They really are talented musicians who are also very HOT and sweethearts!
Dance Baby, dance!

Well, this has been the subject of much watercooler conversation at our office so I felt compelled to have a look and see what the fuss is about. Love the positive feedback the judges give. Have a whole new perspective on K Urban – who knew he had a brain back there? (sorry K!) and Seal – well I saw him live in Melb a couple of years back and he was an awesome performer. The other one – with the tatts – from Good Charlotte – he comes across as so nice, positve and polite. Its a nice show to watch. No one gets hammered or left feeling like they aren’t worthy. I don’t know that I am hooked but will definiately give it another look later in the week.

People have commented they like The Voice because it is not nasty and demeaning like other reality shows. Makes me wonder how the new series of Big Brother will fare…it’s time has passed.
loading...
Wow Jazz Flowers! Can’t wait to see more of her. I saw her in Hairspray and she was amazing.
loading...
Same. She was fabulous. Good luck to her!
loading...
OK don’t hate me, but I don’t like this show. Same old stuff, slightly different format. Over it.
loading...
I watched the last fifteen minutes of Monday’s episode.
Having only seen the last fifteen minutes of the first episode, previously, am now totally convinced that I’m doing myself a favour by not watching.
Many of the comments I’ve read suggest that the only reason that many are watching is because Keith, Joel & Seal are just “so darn hot” !!!!!
The woman that Seal selected in the last portion of last night’s show really was not that crash hot. Her vocals were pretty much all over the place, yet Seal carried on as if he’d discovered The Holy Grail.
Watching the judges dance about in their seats, singing when they are meant to be listening is farcical.
What I’ve seen and read leads me to believe that The Voice is televisions answer to One Direction….flavour of the month.
.
loading...
Oh don’t! I’m normally such a cynic that you’ll snap me out of my love!
And I am in love. If Seal told me I could walk on water I’d believe him! I am mesmerized by him, completely under his spell. Love Joel and think we should adopt him and Keith and Delta are lovely as well – ok, Delta’s posing annoys me.
loading...
I am loving the Voice, and I agree- I don’t know what people’s problem with Delta seems to be. I love her, and I think she’s doing a great job.
loading...
i love the positiveness of the judges toward the singers. They all have the cred to back up their comments. My husband isnt a fan of reality TV , but this has him hooked.
loading...
Loving it. It’s also a GREAT time to be a singing teacher. My books are now full!
loading...
It’s cheesy.
loading...
Seal did not look cool with yellow nail polish! What was he thinking?!
loading...
I’m not sure Mahalia Barnes should be there, to be honest. She’s got music on iTunes, for goodness sake. I thought this competition was about discovering new talent, not elevating people who already have stuff for sale.
The mother and daughter didn’t come across terribly well. Yes, they could sing but it was hardly ‘raw’ talent.
More importantly, isn’t it nice that we don’t have to look at Kyle Sandilands and Brian ‘I have no talent but I’m Irish and I used to go out with Delta so Aussies will love me’ McFadden?
Would love to see Karise/Carise from the first episode win. That girls voice made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
loading...
Finding new talent you woud think, I agree.
But I did read before the show started that it was about finding a Voice and exposing that voice to a broader audience. I guess that can mean they would include contestants already earning a living singing e.g. singing at weddings, parties or anything etc., I think that is why the level of performers are so polished. Many of them have been performing for years.
loading...
I agree. Mahalia Barnes has been in music and even in magazine stories for years, people know who she is already. Yes she is fabulous, but I think this show is about finding new talent not trying to raise the profile of existing talent already in the public eye.
loading...
actually, the show is NOT about discovering new talent. It is about giving people who already have had experience but have not really had a “big break” people are really misunderstanding the premise of the show. And Mahalia aside, I have seen at least 10 of these singers at some point or another as either professional backing singers on TV, their own gigs or more…

Another article title change ?
“The judges. The hotness” ? The very obvious sexist implications of the title change ?
I’m shocked. Really shocked.
loading...
hot girls or hot blokes? seems both sexes could be offended. or neither.
loading...
I agree with rainbow. I’m a straight chick but I think the hottest person on the show by a million miles is Delta. She’s so damn beautiful looking!!!
That title wasn’t referring to the men or woman specifically and objectifying or degrading them, it was gender neutral and non-specific, saying that any or all of the judges are crush-worthly. That’s not sexism, that’s an opinoin. Right? Why did you think it was sexist?
loading...
Loving it! Even though, for the last year or so, I’ve generally been solely devoted to one of the other channels’ evening line-up. I’ve switched for this!
Favourite comment from the other night? My husband said Seal was getting everyone! I noted he had fewer contestants (is that what they’re called on this one?) than the others, and clarified that he was getting everyone he *wanted*. First time in a while that my husband’s said, “Yeah, you’re right” *grin*
loading...
Loving The Voice. I’d pick Joel as my judge as i’ve had a crush on him since i was about 13.
loading...
I’m a fan. And it’s fun joining in with others on twitter- like watching tv with your flatmates.
I was excited that one of my tweets got on tv last night- but I completely missed it! I didn’t even know they showed tweets on air. My twitter friends noticed though.
loading...
I saw it flash up and thought “I know her”, it took me a moment to realise where from!
loading...
It’s the only reality show I have EVER watched. I love the concept, and I’d be stoked if Rachael Leahcar won. She is just wonderful
loading...
I love Keith…never thought I would have a school girl crush again (im too old for that)…but alas, tis true….Oh Keith, if only we werent both happily married!
: )
loading...
Was anyone else watching the night a contestant sang ‘Evie’ and Keith Urban revealed that was his nickname for Nicole when they were first dating and trying to keep it secret?? Love him.. and I’ve blogged about the 9 other reasons to love ‘The Voice’. http://mumplusmore.blogspot.com.au/2012/04/10-reasons-to-love-voice.html
loading...
When they were first dating they would book into hotels under Hank and Evie. It’s the label on some of his merch too.
loading...
Sorry if this has already been asked but I missed it when Shauna Jenson came on. Was she actually any good? Was everyone surprised that the ‘mentors’ didn’t turn around?????
All I know is that when I walked back into the loungeroom – Shauna looked like she’d like to harpoon Seal!
loading...
Hi Bec – Shauna was awesome. I can’t believe the judges passed on her. Maybe they thought her voice was too experienced/polished and they had nothing to teach her. I think Shauna was more angry about the judges passing on her daughter rather than about not getting through herself. That was a bit harsh making her sing straight after her daughter. Still love The Voice though – can’t wait til Battle round!
loading...
I thought she was good, but not awesome. And her behaviour afterward was so prattish! I was a bit annoyed actually that the judges appeased her bad behaviour. They should have politely pulled her up on it.
loading...
Hi there, I was in the audience for her performance and Seal did pull her up on it, quite sternly actually (I wouldn’t want to be on the bad side of him, he was like the school principal) I was glad because she was even more rude then what we saw on tv. I understand the whole mother/daughter thing but it was about her than her daughter not getting through.
loading...
They were okay but a bit “screamy” for me.
I am not a big fan of the “look at how loud I can be on this one note” type of singing.
I know that it takes a special sort of talent, but it can be hard on the ears.
loading...
She has a great voice, but it was too polished and controlled. I think they were looking for a voice with more personality and emotion. Thats my guess anyway!
And she was a really bad sport.
loading...
She had a very polished, professionally trained belter-style voice, impressive but not spine-tingling. I also think, and this is going to sound really terrible, you could hear in her tone that she was a mature singer – if the sound had been coming out of a 20 year old I think everyone would have been blown away. . .
loading...
My favourite so far is Taga Paa who sung Isn’t She Lovely. Amazing!!!
loading...
DWTS?? I’ve been racking my brains trying to figure it out and though I believe myself to have an extensive knowledge of television shows – I just can’t figure this one out….and it’s killing me!!!
loading...
Dancing with the Stars
loading...
are you mental? wow..are you up yourself?
she sounded (and her daughter) just like so many average ‘professional’ singers. formulaic..boring. i agree with Seal. give me something with soul. may not be the best voice. but it just has that je ne sais quoi ..
loading...
why would she be up herself – she was great! i think the fact they didnt pick her its a little staged…they put some doozies through and some great talent was passed up…
loading...
she had to keep convincing herself and ‘us’ that she was great. as i said..up herself. she was good. not ‘great’! there were many voices that sounded similar. predictable voice. i certainly wouldn’t ‘buy’ her voice. she wouldn’t be someone that i would stop playing angry birds for to watch perform..eheh.. as i did for the girl that sang Duffy’s song..or who wore the blue boots and sang a bobby gentry song..
loading...
A friend made me watch it and now I’m hooked.
But I will be recording it from now on as I can’t stand how long the show goes for. There is about an hours worth of footage stretched into 2.5
loading...
Yep, watched Sunday nights episode last night. It ran for 2 hrs 20 mins and I watched it in 1 hr and 15min. I only fast forwarded through the ads and the stuff that was being repeated.
loading...
I love the voice! ESPECIALLY Keith, he is so down to earth!!
loading...
im really enjoying it so our my kids but yeah not sure what it will be like later on…still, there’s an interesting mix of talent so looking forward to seeing more!
Im not sure if the show is about the judges or the singers? strange mix as the judges are getting so much coverage…Delta is the annoying one so this show could makeher or break her
Hubby is over it – he think it could be a 20min show stretched into 60mins haha…
loading...
Oh I love this show! I really like that there are no train wrecks. Everyone up there is seriously talented.
The standard of the voices just blows me away! The other talent shows will normally have maybe two or three people that you sit there and think ‘wow’. This show does it to me constantly.
There are some annoying bits. Too many recaps and too many spoilers about what’s coming up.
Love it. (and I’ve fallen head over heels for Keith)
loading...
Yes, Channel Nine (I know someone will be reading comments):
1. DON’T put the show highlight on the promos and run it over and over again…. (“I don’t know if anyone turned around… I’m legally blind…”)
2. We DON’T really need the touching back stories of various contestants, at least right now, as it’s just about the Voice! Get to the back stories when the coaching starts…
3. If two million people are watching, then the 60 second recap of what just happened before the commercial break is really going to benefit… hmmm… let’s see…. maybe four people across the country. We’re all watching!!!
Thanks for the rave – loving the show.
Watched the US version a while back on Foxtel but lost interest in the coaching stages… will be interesting to see whether everyone stays tuned in for the whole shebang.
loading...
Me too. The coaching stages in the U.S. show on Foxtel completely lost me. It was boring as well as corny. I turned off. I wonder also how the coaching stages with our Australian version will go. We will know the first night it starts I guess.
loading...
Even my husband admitted last night he has a man-crush on Keith!
I’m enjoying The Voice quite a lot, especially considering my usual dislike of talent shows. Keith needs some more girls on his team.
loading...
Seal’s dancing is just incredible! Wow!
loading...
I have a feeling that something everyone loves in the voice, is that no-one is made a fool of, and no-one is nasty.
Take that tv execs from other shows!
loading...
There’s also no ‘after the break….’
But there is ‘what you didn’t miss but we’re going to recap for you anyway’
loading...
It started as meh, moved to a bit of a crush, but last night, when he was up dancing, cupid’s bow struck my heart.
If this goes on I’ll be screaming and crying like a One Direction fan – except I’m pretty sure this is true love. If only he knew I was here .. Seal! I love you!
loading...
We record Biggest Loser in the lounge room, watch DWTS and record The Voice in the theater room for me to watch tommorrow when the kids have their afternoon sleep!
Loser is getting really annoying, haven’t enjoyed this series as much as others, DWTS I only watch becase of Dan Mac!!
The Voice is amazing, love it so much!
loading...
Mum and I were trying to work out a similar scheme last night – every channel had something either or both of us wanted to watch! We ended up taping Biggest Loser/Modern Family, watching The Voice and she flicked to DWTS in the ad breaks. And we’re banking on ABC and SBS re-running Two on the Dividing Range and The Lost Ships of Rome on their 2 channels or at another time. I think I’ll have to bring my video out of retirement. But then we never catch up anyway…
loading...
Don’t have to wait for a re-run – check them out on ABC iView / SBS on Demand! We’ve even downloaded the apps onto our X-Box to watch it through your TV! Awesome flicking through when there’s nothing on.
loading...
Chews up too much interwebs!
loading...
I love all the judges and I love how positive the show is – it reminds me of the first season of MasterChef in that respect.
But I must admit, I’m thinking of asking Seal to join my marriage…….
loading...
Is it just me or are many mediocre singers getting through while some of the best are slipping through the cracks?
loading...
It’s not just you.
loading...
Yup, I thought that too. But a lot seems to be song choice…and audience reaction…I think they look for those things and then if the voice is good on top of that, they are more likely to press the button…
Oh, and I wonder too, if they are thinking: can I win with this person? It is still more than just ‘the voice’…
Love it though!
loading...
I think it’s also because the judges can work with that and they may be more likely to be able to mould/shape them how they want
loading...
I suspect there may also be a difference between the quality of the voices live and through the TV.
I have been to some live shows that were way better than the record version (and vice versa).
loading...
For me what makes this show special is that the contestants get to judge the judges. I don’t usually watch reality talent shows but this one has sucked me right in.
loading...
My partner is an ABC and SBS man. He has never watched a reality program in his life and thinks he is so above them. After a holiday with extended family, where he didn’t have control over the remote, he is hooked on The Voice. Hilarious.
loading...
I am going to be incredibly unpopular here, buuuuut…..I don’t like it! I have tried to, believe me! I want to like it so badly – I need a new show to be hooked on. But it just doesn’t do it for me. It seems slow, the judges seem to lack any real quality feedback, and the whole format just seems old and tired. If I could sum up my feelings about it in one word, it would be “meh” (accompanied by shrugged shoulders).
Okay, let the onslaught begin! *cowers in a corner*
loading...
Seconded!
loading...
Some of the comments about Keith, Joel & Seal are borderline sexist.
Am I sensing another goose/gander moment on MM ?????!!!!!!
loading...
It was my comment about how sexy Seal is wasn’t it?
loading...
Loving it! I think I particularly like it as it really does seem quite positive. And as Em Rusciano said, I like that I don’t feel anxious about contestants being made fun of. I felt that was a big thing on Idol, and phew, none of that here! And seriously, Keith? I am loving getting to know him. What a cool guy!
loading...
Apart from Seal, none of the judges’ music is my cup of tea- waaaay too mainstream and Top 40 lite. And while I find Delta nauseatingly saccharine (always have), Joel and Keith seem like genuinely nice people. It surprises me how much I’m warming to them.
loading...
I can’t choose between Keith and Joel.
Is that because I’m a LIbra or because they are both HEAVEN?
loading...
Did anyone else feel the love between Seal and the last contestant. He was smitten.
loading...
Was that the girl who sang Mercy? I watched about 15 min, & I’ve been racking my brains trying to remember who did the original of that song.
loading...
Duffy
loading...
Ah, thanks.
loading...
As a fellow Libran, I say both. I think of Joel as the class clown I have an impossible crush on, but Keith is the one I’m secretly falling a bit in love with!
loading...
Why choose one? Have both of them..
I am going to take the three of them Seal to dance with (slow dance) Keith to dine with (long slow dinner) and Joel to play with – a great time for me anyway
loading...
As a fellow Libran I adore them both too! Why choose? We Librans are meant to be good at balancing.
loading...
I’m addicted. I think we all love it for 2 reasons.
1. Because there has been sooo much crap on TV that we were all craving for something decent to watch.
And
2. Because it really is fabulous!
loading...
I have a bit of a theory on Australia’s Got Talent and The Voice. I think there is a curse on these shows. I’m not superstitious, my thoughts are based on FACTS. Ok?
All the judges have had public breakups recently. All citing “work/distance related issues”
*Kyle Sandilands from Tamara
*Danni Minogue from Kris
*Seal from Heidi Klum
*Brian McFadden from Delta
*Delta from Brian McFadden and one of the Jonas brothers who I don’t know the name of (is it important?)
So . . . what will happen to both Nicole’s?
They’re doomed
!!!

Interesting to note that people are torn between watching DWTS and The Voice. Some are in tears as they watch The Voice.
This year, the two shows are up against each other.
Next year….the winner of The Voice will be a contestant on DWTS !
Please can we have some thought provoking, decent TV shows ?
loading...
I can’t stand DWTS. I would rather watch grass grow.
I thought it was important to share this with you !
loading...
I am watching crazy-random Japanese television on SBS 2
Iron Chef, Ninja Warriors, and Unbeatable Banzuke. So fun!
loading...
KDot started screaming (ready for bed) when Mahalia was doing her Barnes thing. I pointed out to her “Sweetie, you can try, but I think you’ll find NO-ONE can outscream a Barnes”.
loading...
haha! good one
loading...
It kind of reminded me of Apu: “Silly customer! You cannot harm a twinkie!”
loading...
When my wife heard her she said, “she’s just screaming”. I could just look at her and say, do you know who she is?
loading...
She’s done duets with Barnesy onstage and on at least one of his albums, the girl can sing! Mum said she’s seen her sing River Deep Mountain High with Barnesy a few times live – she is often one of the support acts.
loading...
I haven’t really been watching it, but have watched some videos of some of the contestants and Mahalia can really sing. It didn’t even look like Proud Mary was an effort for her. She must want exposure as a solo artist.
The girl (forgotten her name) who sang La Vie en Rose actually brought tears to my eyes. She did a lovely version of the song.
loading...
Guys, seriously, this post has to have been sponsored by the Nine Network as every second tweet in your gallery is from Nine related talent/employees… Mia included.
I never watch the Nine Network. Not much there to interest me. BUT last week I did start to get reeled in by The Voice.
So I’m sitting here watching Modern Family & New Girl not having realised that The Voice is even on tonight. Oh well I am going to have play catch up tomorrow.
PS Poor Delta. Brian McFadden? Nick Jonas? Hope she can raise the bar a bit in the future. Aim high Delta! You’re worth more!
loading...
If they said it’s not sponsored, it’s not sponsored.
Why can’t we take it at face value? And perhaps they just all really like The Voice just like the other 2+ million Australians. It is a hit. A massive hit considering most TV shows find it hard to break the 1 million mark each week.
I agree with Delta. Maybe she just needs to be on her own for a bit… find out who she is and then meet someone out of the entertainment industry. Her backup singer looked pretty cute!
loading...
No reason to hide anything – it’s not sponsored
loading...
get over the whole sponsored post thing!!! I’ve never seen so many commenters get SOOOO worked up over sponsored posts! Mamamia goes so far to say that something is NOT a sponsored post now because of all the whingeing commenters. Build a bridge!
loading...
sorry, that was not dinner table etiquette. just letting go of some pent up frustration. But I am sick of silly space-wasting sponsored post comments. Can’t imagine how sick of it the MM team is…
loading...
I WISH I could watch it…I’m at home, but my husband is watching ABC – the Tim Flannery program (which I would have loved to watch at any other time)…so I’m probably going to have to catch up during a repeat showing..
All the judges are great – I think Delta just needs to find some inspiring things to say to people to draw them to her, instead of just saying ‘we’ll have fun’ etc. I think she sits well with the others though, it’s a great panel. I love watching Keith singing the songs, and I’m glad he’s on the show. Nicole was right to let the country get to know him..
loading...
Ah….good old Tim !
Can’t get him off the public payroll, can we ?
Why haven’t they given him his own show ?
loading...
I’m in love with Seal. No really I am. More than anyone else! There is definitely something captivating about him…… sigh a single gal needs someone to admire from a far!
Now if you excuse me I’ll be glued to the TV for the next 1/2 hour.
loading...
I think I love him more than you!
loading...
Not possible!!!!!!
Back off ok ???
loading...
Behind me in the queue, please, ladies. I was spruiking Seal’s charms in the last post we had on The Voice when everyone else was going on about Keith and Joel …
loading...
Looks like the same pattern is happening tonight… that’s ok, less ladies to fight over him the better
haha
seriously he’s charming … it must be the accent or something. Although I do like black men (can I even say that?) I think I can!
I find them very sexy… ok I will stop daydreaming now and start preparing my lunch for work tomorrow that I should’ve done hours ago !!
loading...
