What is your oldest and most beloved item of clothing?

When it comes to my clothes, I’m not terribly sentimental. I’m a good chucker. Prince Charles is not a good chucker. He is a clothes hoarder. But for a very good reason. According to news.com.au Prince Charles has urged Vogue readers to haul out the old clothes and put them back on.

Prince Charles in his ‘vintage’ coat

“Prince Charles, a longtime environmental activist, has taken to the September issue of Vogue to tout his newest earth-friendly cause – wearing old clothes.

Writing a guest column, the Prince of Wales encouraged fashionistas everywhere to consider their carbon footprint and re-wear classic designs.

“Not so long ago, wearing old or secondhand clothes – never mind recycled ancient artifacts – tended to be an embarrassment to many, and yet now ‘vintage’ outfits are seen on red carpets all over the world,” he wrote.

“I believe fashion has a role to play in helping to confront some of the environmental challenges we face. For this trend is not only about an attraction for retro design and the charm of the old, it is very much about the future.”

Now let me think. What do I have in my wardrobe that’s coming up for a double digit birthday? I have an orange leather jacket I bought in LA about 10 years ago.

Haven’t worn it for a couple of sesasons but I wouldn’t chuck it out. I have a pair of Seven jeans from 2002 (does that make them vintage denim?). And I just chucked a pair of Sergio Rossi shoes I bought in 1994 because they were falling apart. Wedges. Loved them.

And I have some fairly ‘vintage’ pyjama pants.

What is your oldest and most beloved piece of clothing and how often do you wear it? Do you buy new clothes often or do you prefer to recycle? Does the planet come into the equation when you think about going shopping?

I have so many clothes in my old wardrobe at my parents house. Just a few weeks ago I was remembering a leather skirt I wore in about year 9, thinking how that would be so in fashion right now. So I got my Mum to bring it over to see if it stills fits ... and lo and behold! I've been wearing in out a lot lately and getting so many compliments. People die when I tell them that it's Finch, from over ten years ago!

I have a Nirvana t-shirt that I got for my 14th birthday and I am about to turn 34! It was white (now yellowed), there are still a few orange stains on it from colourd hairspray worn at a Big Day Out one year and the collar has holes in it. I NEVER wear it now but I will NEVER through it out :)
