In pictures: What 50 years of true love looks like.

These photos of couples married for more than 40 years capture the beauty of life long love.

Photographer Tracey Buyce’s mum died in 2007, less than four years later she lost her father. They had been married for 46 years.

The couple lost their 2-year-old son early in their married life and Buyce’s mother turned to alcohol to deal with the grief, but her husband stood by her.

“To me, loving someone is loving them through both the best and the worst of times, as well as being able to see the good in that person when they are unable to see it in themselves,” Buyce told the Huffington Post.

“The happy times are easy, it’s persevering through the challenging times that creates longevity and growth in a marriage.”

“Marriage is complex, full of ups and downs and joys and sorrows,” she said. “Marriage is your own little universe that just the two of you create.”

This gives me hope. Every couple I know of my parents age (early 50s) are divorced. Doesn't give me much inspiration or motivation to get married.

Don't give up hope Shannon. Ay my wedding there were 4 couples with 45+ years of marriage each; my parents 48 &1/2 years, aunt and uncle 48 years, family friends about 55+ years and my new grandparents in law at 60 years & 5 days.

My grandparents had a clearance sale and married off 3 children in under 6 months, each couple still together and all had their 50ths last year. I hope we are as lucky as my in laws married off all 3 children in 9 months. The in laws just clocked up 40 years less than a week ago.

On my mother's side there is an aunt and uncle that would be around the 55 years (uncle is almost 81). My godfather and his wife are also at 51 years and counting so I seem to be the opposite of you - all these great examples of long marriages and very few divorces.
