I think the reason we find this so abhorent is that it involves representing little girls in an adult context. These mums are really no different to the mums running up and down the sidelines of a netball game shouting instructions and encouragement to their daughter.
Neither seems completely right as it places so much pressure on the child, BUT I would imagine that a good percentage of the little pageant girls love it just as much as the wing attack on the local netball team!
My daughter used to love her dancing recitals, getting made up, hair done and putting on sparkly outfits etc - it's sooo girly! Only difference is I guess that when she wanted to stop I let her .. and i never stood at the back of the room waving my arms attemtping to give instruction.
Gig - I think little boys are more inclined to get this from playing team sports ...
and yes Mia, a GF did tell me the other day that her 9 year old son was asking her about internet porn - he told her it was 'dirty sex'!!
Young boys have internet porn. That's the problem!!!
