These little old ladies have been in love for 72 years. They just made it official.

Vivian Boyack and Alice Dubes are 91 and 90 years old respectively.

They’ve been in a relationship since 1942, long before gay marriage was allowed in their home state of Iowa in the US.

But Iowa began allowing same-sex marriage in 2009 — and this week, the pair finally exchanged vows.

Reverend Linda Hunsaker, who presided over the ceremony at the First Christian Church in Davenport, Iowa: “This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago.”

Alice and Vivian held hands throughout the ceremony, which took place in front of a small group of the couple’s family and close friends, the Quad-City Times reports.

The women met while growing up in Yale, Iowa, and moved to Davenport in 1947 to set up home.

Vivian worked as a teacher and Alice held various payroll positions.

Jerry Yeast, 73, has been friends with the couple since he was an 18-year-old landscaper working in their yard, he told the Quad-City times.

“I’ve known these two women all my life, and I can tell you, they are special,” Mr Yeast said.

“This is a very special day for all of us.”

“We’ve had a good time,” Alice said of the seven decades the pair has spent together.

Extremely ageist and patronising to call these brave women "Little old ladies". They deserve our respect.
