North West's vest: totally fashion-forward or irresponsible parenting?

This is North’s most bizarre outfit yet.

It’s been a big week for Kanye and Kim Kardashian. Kanye showed his new collection for Adidas at New York Fashion Week. Kim sat front row. And North West screamed as she was also made to sit front row.

It was during this stint on the FROW that Kim made an extremely bizarre decision: she dressed up her 20-month-old daughter in a bulletproof vest for her appearance at Fashion Week.

She posted this picture of the outfit on her Instagram account:

The image was captioned, “Look at my little cutie!!! #DaddysMuse #BabyYeezyBulletProofVest.” And her followers quickly lost their minds.

The vest, designed by Kanye for Adidas, coped a lot of flack from commenters.

“Can this child ever be a normal baby girl and wear some colours, a bow? Anything?” demanded one angry fan.

“Might as well get her to hold an AK-47 ‘for fashion’,” wrote another.  “I feel so sorry for her. She doesn’t seem to get to be a baby.”

This is a fashion faux pas to say the least. It’s seems very, very strange to put a child in a bulletproof vest: this kind of clothing instantly evokes images of danger, and because North West was not, in fact, in immediate danger at Fashion Week, putting her in the vest trivialises the fact that there are people around the world who have to wear protective clothing as a necessity.

Want more? Try: Kanye West dictates what Kim Kardashian wears. Continues to be a douche.

It’s not the first parenting decision Kanye and Kim have been criticised for this week. Questions have been asked about why the toddler was made to attend the Alexander Wang fashion show when she was clearly not enjoying herself: her tantrum was epic.

In classic Kanye style, he refused to admit that Fashion Week is no place for a toddler.

He told Vice that North was crying because she was worried about how the critics would receive her dad’s collection.

“She just wanted people to stop being mean to her daddy. Because she knows that her daddy loves the world and just wants to make it a more beautiful place.”

Hhhhhmmmm.

So Kayne West's daughter has a completely normal temper tantrum after being expected to sit still in an overstimulating environment and her fathers response is to talk about himself and presume that his 2 year olds moods MUST be about how he is feeling. Her daddy does not love the world, her daddy is disturbingly narcissistic and only loves the world when it confirms his own elevated opinion of himself. I find it alarming that he is so incapable of seeing that his daughter may have needs or thoughts of her own that may differ from his needs or thoughts. That he thinks his explanation is more appropriate than "she is a little girl who had had enough" makes me feel a little sick. Kids need to learn empathy, but who would ever think it was healthy to teach a 2 year old that they are responsible for the moods and emotions of an adult? Only an unstable abusive narcissistic adult would believe a 2 year old "should" or even could place the emotional needs of an adult before their own.

How does North even know what people are saying about her dad unless she is hearing it from her parents? She is too young to read media and they can control what she watches at this age. I feel really sorry for this child. Her parents may have chosen to be media whores, but she certainly didn't!
