Instagram made a change today. The people tore it to shreds.

In case you missed it, Instagram got a brand spanking new logo and design on Wednesday. And the internet is not too sure how they feel about it.

Upgrading its original vintage camera logo design, the US based social media app has replaced it with a simple white camera outline and orange and purple gradient background.

“Inspired by the previous app icon, the new one represents a simpler camera and the rainbow lives on in gradient form,” the caption to Instagram’s revealing photograph read.

“The Instagram community has evolved over the past five years from a place to share filtered photos to so much more — a global community of interests sharing more than 80 million photos and videos every day. Our updated look reflects how vibrant and diverse your storytelling has become.”

Vibrancy and diversity is one thing, but change is a whole other issue.

Taking to another social media app, fans of Instagram took to Twitter to discuss the changes.

“The new Instagram logo/icon looks so different, I thought I’d deleted the app by mistake,” one Twitter user wrote.

“The new Instagram logo looks like it’s for a centre that will teach my stupid tween algebra on weekends,” another wrote. Ouch.

Some thought the new logo bore a striking resemblance to Microsoft Powerpoint.

Others saw a different point of inspiration.

And it being social media, some just saw sex.

Many were just confused as to where their favourite photo sharing app had gone.

Then after hours of kick back, Instagram posted a photo that offered a greater back story to where the design had come from.

"Three years ago, Paulo del Valle (@paulodevalle) started the My Instagram Logo project, inspiring thousands of creators to remix our icon in wildly creative ways. Paulo, who lives in Sao Paulo, used more than 400 flowers to make his remix of our app's new look. "I went to the biggest flower shop in Rio de Janeiro and bough half of their stock for Mother's Day. Then I got home and I had no idea how I was going to do it," he explains. Eight hours later, he had something beautiful."
